neverstarstar The bite of leafbare still lingered in the air as Mistralpaw made her way closer to WinterClan's territory in search of juniper berries. Her silvery-white pelt blended into her surroundings well, making her more akin to a ghost drifting over the snow than a she-cat from SwiftClan. Her mentor had decided she was worthless before he even gave her a chance. She growled at that, kicking a snowdrift. Firetooth wouldn't even give her a chance to succeed, so how did he expect her to do so? So she did as any medicine cat worth their salt would and began to teach herself. Though it was slow going, she had made some progress and found that the next herb on her docket to learn was juniper berries. They seemed to grow best near WinterClan's border, so that's the direction she headed in, ignoring the chill in the air and anger in her bones.

Earlybloom was restless, once again. Whenever something important happened out in the territory, Earlybloom would be seized by a desire to wander. It always led her to where she was needed. Today it overcame her suddenly and she followed the feeling, surveying her plant's growth as she padded closer to the border. Once there the reason for her arrival wasn't immediately apparent, there was no torn fur or blood scent, just the chirping of a bird and the peace of the land. The feeling didn't subside, so she stepped over the border in pursuit. Just a few rabbit-lengths over she turned and started padding parallel with the border, scenting as she went. What was calling to her?

The only thing that stood out on Mistralpaw as she wandered the white territory were her sapphire eyes, glimmering like gems in the muted sunlight. She cast her gaze about for the herbs she was looking for, a slight frown marring her face when she didn't immediately find what she was looking for. Still, after a few more minutes of looking she finally found a bush with the berries hanging heavy on it and let out a yip of joy, something she would never do in front of another cat. Racing towards the berries, she failed to see another cat walking nearby with a look of intense concentration on her face. "Thank StarClan," she mewed to herself, plucking the berries carefully. After all, her first lesson with each herb she mastered was how to pick them.

The gray and white witch about leaped out of her fur at the sound of another voice, spinning around with the beginnings of a snarl, the she-cat was surprised to find an apprentice. The young cat was focused on the berries, which was curious. Perhaps this was a medicine cat? Earlybloom had yet to meet them all. Curious, she relaxed and strode forward, noticing the restlessness fade from her. "Hello," she called as she approached, keeping her tail high and friendly.

SQUISH. The berry turned to mush in her paw as her claws pierced through it in surprise. Shaking the remnants off, she spun around to face the newcomer with narrowed, suspicious eyes. She had the scent of WinterClan, and Mistralpaw had been warned at the Spring Gathering about the frosty clan. She lifted her tail in greeting, but kept her expression carefully neutral. "Hi," she mewed hesitantly, still trying to get the juniper berries off of her paw. "I'm not on your territory, am I? I've always been rats at scenting borders." She sounded somewhat unsure, but her expression was coolly confident. "I just spent my entire day looking for these blasted berries, so when I found them I might have raced across a border without noticing. I'm Mistralpaw, of SwiftClan." She hurried to add that last part, realizing she might be mistaken for a rogue.

The berry stuck to the other cat's claws was obviously a juniper berry, and she wondered why she'd be trying to pick them. "No," she answered, "you're a few lengths from the border. Though you're close enough to illicit a response from a patrol, if I'm being honest." The she-cat sat down next to the bush as she introduced herself, "I'm Earlybloom. Witch of WinterClan, perhaps SwiftClan calls them medicine cats? If you don't mind my asking, Mistralpaw, why are you ruining perfectly good juniper berries? Those are used for medicine you know, they aren't play things."

"Witch?" Mistralpaw screwed up her nose at the strange title, but understanding sparked in her eyes when she explained what a witch was. However, before she could announce herself as a medicine cat as well, Earlybloom was chastising her for squishing the berries. Of course, another healer, any lecture. Maybe StarClan had been wrong to make her medicine cat apprentice if every healer she came into contact with felt the need to yell at her for any mistake. Hiding her annoyance, she replied stiffly, "I wasn't ruining them until you startled me. I'm the medicine cat apprentice of SwiftClan, and I was looking for these berries all day." She didn't add that she knew they were used for healing, just not what they healed.

Earlybloom was surprised by the stiff response, and even more surprised by her words. "Well, I didn't realize. Especially since your mentor is not with you. Where is he?" She knew of Firetooth, but hadn't met him personally. "I understand that SwiftClan trains like we do, and Chestnutpaw would never be expected to be so close to the border by herself. Some clans can be dangerous." Okay, WinterClan could perhaps be called dangerous, but Earlybloom was unwilling to admit that. "And she'd also not be expected to handle herbs without knowing precisely how to take care of them." It wasn't a slight on the apprentice, but definitely a biting criticism of Firetooth, what was he thinking?

Mistralpaw began to nod in agreement but caught herself and instead stayed stoically still. She knew some clans were dangerous, but what was more dangerous was that she had no training to speak of. Firetooth's training was less about teaching her and more about talking at her and hoping she retained the knowledge. "I was taking care of them, though!" she mewed, unable to withhold the defensive statement. "You startled me, that's all!" She looked a little sheepish which, on the overly proud she-cat, looked very uncomfortable. She didn't linger on the thought long before another took its place.
"You sound like you like teaching Chestnutpaw," she began, hoping her plan worked. "And you seem very knowledgeable yourself, not to mention non-hostile despite coming from WinterClan." She didn't bother explaining that thought, knowing Earlybloom would be aware of the rumors about her clan. "Firetooth doesn't think I'm worth teaching, and I don't think he's worth learning from. What if you taught me?" She quickly added, "You wouldn't just be helping me, either! You'd be helping all of SwiftClan by doing so." She certainly didn't go so far as to beg, but her eyes lit up at the chance of actually learning something, and her curious nature wouldn't let that opportunity pass her by without giving it a shot.

"I can't believe a medicine cat would be so cruel to their apprentice," Earlybloom argued, though without heat. She could tell Mistralpaw wasn't lying about this. Firetooth really had been so cruel. She didn't again address the treatment of the berries, instead listening to the apprentice's idea calmly. "That's not how things are done," she reminded the apprentice gently. "Imagine Firetooth's fury if he discovered me teaching you? Not to mention the fury of Wintrystar and Chimerastar." Still, it was tempting. Earlybloom did like teaching. And Mistralpaw was young and needed mentoring, Firetooth was failing in that and therefore creating a sadly ineffective medicine cat.

"No one would ever need to know!" urged Mistralpaw, some desperation creeping into her voice unbeknownst to her. "Really, Wintrystar and Chimerastar will never find out if you don't tell anyone! And if you teach me I won't be squishing berries all day either." She didn't comment on Earlybloom's assessment of Firetooth's treatment of her. Of course he was cruel! It would serve him right for her to lean how to heal without his help. She could prove her value to Chimerastar and the clan would get a proficient healer in the process. She didn't know if she could trust Earlybloom, but this was the best chance she'd had since being promoted and it seemed like a horrible idea to let it pass her by.

The witch looked unswayed, expression unchanged from when she'd declined. But before she could open her mouth the feeling hit again, the restless one. If she said know, she was somehow sure it wouldn't go away. Earlybloom had to say yes. It felt like a terrible idea, one sure to backfire. But she trusted her gut and said, "if, and I do mean if, I decide to mentor you there are a few ground rules. And despite not being SwiftClan or your true mentor, I will expect them to be followed and I expect your absolute respect, understood? I, in turn, will earn and keep your respect and teach you everything I know of healing."

This, this is what Mistralpaw wanted. What she had always wanted. A mentor that would be strict but fair, and share with her everything she knew. So Firetooth hadn't worked out. She had another mentor in Earlybloom now, and that's all that mattered. "Of course, yes!" she purred, unable to hide her excitement. "You have my utmost respect, Earlybloom. Thank you, StarClan thank you." She licked the rest of the berry off of her paw, wanting to look as neat as she could for her new mentor. After a moment, though, logistics came into play. "How will we do this?" she asked, motioning to WinterClan's border. "I don't suppose your clan will let me cover over, and if you stay on our territory there's a chance Firetooth might find us..."

"We will be doing training in WinterClan," Earlybloom informed her, completely unconcerned with her clan. "Medicine cats do not obey borders like warriors do. You will be safe in WinterClan. I'll come and collect you from here, we'll do lessons in the territory and I'll return you here after. If anyone questions you while you wait for me, tell them you are SwiftClan medicine cat apprentice, and Earlybloom will be here any second to see you. That will ensure they leave you be. We really aren't a clan of savages, I promise you." And Wintrystar would likely not find out, if Earlybloom was doing something it was usually assumed to be allowed. No one questioned the witch. "Now, I have Chestnutpaw to mentor as well and Firetooth should not get wind of this, so it can't be everyday. Probably four times a week is all I can offer you."

"Four times will be perfect!" purred Mistralpaw, though it was clear Earlybloom could've said anything and Mistralpaw would have likely agreed. The apprentice, while frosty and proud, had a curious streak a mile wide, and being put into a position where she could learn and then not being taught was torture for her. Earlybloom's agreement was like a gift from StarClan, an affirmation she was on the right path. "When can we start? Should I bring anything? What will we learn?" Earlybloom didn't know Mistralpaw outside of this one encounter and had no idea how strange it was to see the stoic she-cat so enthused over something.

Earlybloom got the impression that Mistralpaw would be a fantastic medicine cat once day, her enthusiasm and eagerness was enough evidence for that. It warmed Earlybloom's heart to see it, she reminded her of Chestnutpaw. Her pupil was her pride and joy and to see that in another cat was surprising and touching. "We'll start right now, with a lesson in juniper berries, since you already seem curious about them. After that you can tell me what you do know so I know were to go from here." She shifted, now studying the berries, "do you know anything about juniper? What it does, whether the entire plant can be used, anything?"

Mistralpaw contained her excitement the moment Earlybloom launched into a lesson, quashing down the emotion in place of studious nodding. "I don't know much at all," she replied after a moment, embarrassed to admit it but preferring that to lying and being proven wrong. "I know only the berries can be used, right? But I don't remember what they're for. I want to say illness rather than injury though, right?" The munchkin she-cat shifted her weight and sat down on her haunches, ears tipped forwards as she listened carefully.

"That's fine," she assured Mistralpaw kindly, "we'll learn together." The gray and white cat took a moment to collect her thoughts before launching into her lecture, "so juniper berries are a basic herb that every witch - I mean medicine cat - will want to keep close by. They grow in drier places, so don't expect many in watery places. You're correct, only the berries are useful to us. And when a cat chews them up they can help with a variety of things: shortness of breath, strength, anxiety, and bellyaches. If you'd like to store them, simply keep them wrapped and out of the sun, though don't expect them to keep longer than a season. Any questions?" She talked with a brisk voice, going fast enough to ensure her apprentice would need to listen but still be able to retain the information.

Mistralpaw sat silently as Earlybloom spoke, expressionless though it was clear there was a lot of thinking going on behind her sapphire eyes. Silence passed for a few beats after Earlybloom stopped talking. Finally, Mistralpaw spoke. "They're not difficult to find, but only in dry places," she said, mentally ruling out the chance of finding many in their WaterClan territory. "They're good for a variety of ailments, and last a season. They are delicate however," she motioning down at the stain on her paw, "So storing them will be difficult." Another moment of silence passed before she nodded to herself. "This will be a good herb to keep around when we've settled in a camp because of how many various things it can treat, but won't work well when we're on the road because of how easily it is ruined. Does that sound right?"

"Exactly," Earlybloom added, "and once they are safely in a leaf wrap you shouldn't have to worry about them." She stood and beckoned the cat over with her tail, "now, because they aren't toxic you don't have to worry about getting them in your mouth, so I usually pick them with my teeth. I do this by putting my teeth just past the top of the berry, so they are biting it's stem, and then pull gently but with a tug. Like this," she demonstrated quickly, plucking a berry quickly and dropping it to the ground. "And if you need a good amount, I grab an entire branch of them, just be warned the leaves are spiky and will hurt if bitten down on. Would you like to try?"
