Ravenmask walked around the camp restlessly. He had smelled some strange cats on their southern border yesterday but of course by the time he was there they were gone. Not wanting to explore on his own, he came back to camp hoping to find some other cats to go with him. But by the time he got back it was too late to go out again so he had to wait until now, the morning. It was important to find out who these cats are especially since SummerClan was thinking about expanding the southern border. Hopefully they were just vagrant rogues who can be just sent on their way. Who can go with me?

Dawnmemories had been up for awhile, eating a breakfast of stale mouse and giving her pelt a thorough wash. She was just finishing sorting out the days patrols in her head when she spotted Ravenmask. He wasn't on the dawn patrol and seemed bothered by something. Curious, she bounded over to him, tail waving in greeting. "Morning, Ravenmask. Everything alright?"

Ravenmask, a member of the Red Guard, dipped his head to the new deputy. "Well, actually it's not," he began. "Late yesterday while I was out along our southern border I smelled some strange cats. Since I was alone I didn't want to trail them without any help. Who knows what I'd find? So I'm looking for some cat to go with me now to check them out." Everyone knew Ratstar was thinking about expanding the southern border to the ocean. And if there were any rogues in the area, that would mean trouble. "Hopefully whoever they are, they're just passing through and don't live there."

Dawnmemories listened intently, her lashing tail indicating just how disturbing she found this news, "you did the right thing," Dawnmemories said, after he was finished explaining. "And I'd appreciate if you lead me to the spot you scented them at once, we'll report to Ratstar when we return. If there are rogues we could be looking at a future battle."

"I'm ready," the dark gray warrior replied. He was pleased he did the right thing. He had been second guessing himself whether he should have followed the trail alone. He led the way out of the camp then turned south. "I couldn't be sure how many cats I smelled but there was more than one, at least two. I hope there wasn't more than that." He liked the idea of extending the southern boundary. Spending time at the shore sounded like it could be a lot of fun.

Dawnmemories followed along, "of there's more than two, we'll have to be careful not to get caught. We could surely fight more off in the event of an ambush but I'd rather avoid injury to ourselves." Extending the southern boundary would be a lot of work, and in the past Dawnmemories had questioned the worth of it, but she'd had an opportunity to think about it more and understood why it may be worth it to everyone. "The odd thing is, we haven't had any sightings of rogues there for awhile, I'm wondering if they just moved into the area."

"What I'm hoping is they're just loners passing through," Ravenmask meowed. "But that could be just wishful thinking." That scenario would be the best in this case and most likely wouldn't involve any fighting. But when was the last time anything really went his way? "But anyway, we need to know." He wasn't one to back down from a fight but ... he just thought of this. "I just now realized the land technically isn't ours, at least not yet. So we don't have the right order any cats off of it. What do we do if we come across these cats?"

"We'll ask about their intentions," Dawnmemories answered, thinking it through as she walked. "You're right, we may have no right to attack. And if Ratstar decides not to expand the territory we'll never have to. But if he does, then it'd be good to know whether rogues have settled there. It could be that you're right, they are just passing through. It's even possible that they didn't realize they were trying to settle beside a clan full of cats. Most small rogue bands won't, it's too much danger to be so close to a clan."

"That makes sense," Ravenmask meowed. "I never really gave much thought about how rogues might think, except that they're usually aggressive and mean." As they talked, he recognized the place where he smelled the strange cats. "Over here," he said as he approached the border. "Here's where the scent's at." He sniffed the tree at the border then looked sharply back at Dawnmemories. "The old scent's still here but there's now fresh scent too! And look there on our side of the border!" Several fox lengths inside SummerClan's territory was a bunch of black and red feathers strewn all around, a sure sign that a red winged black bird had been devoured there.
Just over the border concealed behind some tall grasses, two pairs of eyes watched the clan cats closely.

Dawnmemories fur fluffed up with rage as she inspected the scene and smelled the rogues herself, "prey-stealers! Surely they knew the border was here? I haven't ever came across a rogue who hadn't heard of the clans and didn't know we had borders." As she spoke a creeping feeling spread through her fur, like she was being watched. At first the deputy ignored it but when it didn't subside she turned towards the borders, inspecting the plants there carefully.

"You're right about that," Ravenmask meowed. "Any mouse brain would know what scent markers are even if they're not living in a clan." ------- "Are we prey-stealers?" a small voice asked another cat, both of whom were hiding in the tall grass.
"Hush!" an older voice whispered urgently. ------- Ravenmask's ears pricked at the sound. He couldn't quite make out what was said but he was sure it was another cat. "Over there," he pointed to the spot where he thought the voice came from. "I think someone's there. I heard a voice," he told Dawnmemories.

Dawnmemories pricked her ears, tail lashing, and nodded, "yeah, I heard something too." She felt momentarily uncertain, should she confront the strangers? Or go get help? It was her first choice as a deputy that she felt entirely unsure about. So she just stared for a moment, uncertainty weighing on her shoulder heavily. Finally, she looked at Ravenmask and asked, "are you comfortable finding the cats, or would you prefer I fetched a patrol?"

Ravenmask sniffed the air. There was a slight breeze coming from the direction of the sounds. "I smell only two fresh cats scents," he replied. "And there's two of us. I think we can handle this situation." He looked eagerly at the tall grasses.

Dawnmemories nodded, satisfied and comforted by his words. She could hear the voices again and with a firm voice she padded forward and called, "hey! We know you're there, show yourselves before we have to come find you!"

A rustling sound came from the grasses then a sharp voice. "Hey! Come back here right now!" But it was too late. A tiny golden tabby tom kit burst out of his hiding place and faced the two clan cats with an apparent fearlessness. He was barely two moons old and very skinny from malnutrition. Small downy black feathers protruded from his neck fur, a sure sign that he had been eating a bird. In fact, it was his first meal in two days. "Go away 'n leave us alone!" he demanded. "This is our bird. Find your own!" Then with a little hiss and a fierce face he stood his ground in front of the two warriors.
Ravenmask looked stern but stifled a giggle at the brave stance the little kit was making. What a warrior he'd make! he thought.
An adult tom came out of the grass, he too had the appearance of malnutrition. He walked with a heavy limp and then stopped beside the kit. Dipping his head he meowed, "I'm sorry if we're causing any problems here. We were just hungry and I haven't been able to make a catch for two days until now."

Dawnmemories carefully his her shock and immediate pity as she took in the two cats. The feathers on the kit confirmed that these were the thieves, and no amount of polite words and explanation could excuse that. Especially when she was deputy. Still, there didn't seem to be much of a fight here. Forcing herself to seem relaxed but stern she addressed the skinny tom, "I'm sorry to hear that, but that bird was SummerClan prey. Did you not notice the borders?" Her eyes strayed to the starving kit and her look softened.

The older tom looked down onto the ground. "I did," he admitted. "But the bird started out on the other side of the border. It had a broken wing and fluttered over here before I could get it." He looked over at the leg he was favoring.
"Fox came 'n killed my mom 'n sister!" the little golden tom kit meowed fervently. "Dat's how Dad got hurt. But he got the 'ol fox in the end. Nothin' can git past my Dad!" He looked up at his father proudly.
Ravenmask saw the older cat was indeed injured. There was long gash on his leg that looked red and inflamed. "I'm no medicine cat," he began speaking to Dawnmemories, "but I think his leg is infected. That injury looks nasty. Do you think we should bring them back to camp and have Graythorn look at it?"
