Heathersong was loathe to leave the nursery and her kits, but knew that she wasn't needed there anymore. Galekit didn't need her much anymore at all, and Mistralpaw was already an apprentice, out with Firetooth fulfilling her destiny. She licked her pelt a few extra times, determined to make a good first impression, and approached the apprentice's den. "Luckyki-I mean, Luckypaw?" she called, recalling the laughing tom-kit she had played with what felt like moons ago. "Luckypaw, it's time to get your training started. I'll meet you by the fresh-kill pile when you're ready!" She was in no hurry, and in fact appreciated the extra time she had to plan her lesson.
Luckypaw's head fell back against the side of the nest as his jaws parted in a massive yawn. His response to her was lost in an unintelligible warble, but as she ducked out of the den, he decided she understood. The cream tabby sagged back against his brother in the neighboring nest for a few precious moments before heaving himself to his paws and stepping forward to stretch outside of the hollow log they'd claimed today as the apprentice's den. It was lucky he was so young; the rough curve of the trunk and the scratchy pieces of grass were terribly uncomfortable to lay upon, and the two feathers he'd added to his nest did little to soften it up.
Once more he yawned, his eyes watering as he looked around the tiny camp for his mentor or mother. Wildrain must still be asleep, though, so he headed toward Heathersong instead. "Morning, Heathersong."

Heathersong watched her apprentice as he shambled out of his nest, wincing at the patchwork of bark and leaves he had to sleep on. Perhaps she would find steal some apprentices from their lessons today and assign them to finding more suitable bedding for their den. She was pulled out of her thoughts when Luckypaw approached her with a jaw-shattering yawn, and offered him an exasperated smile. "You didn't stay up too late last night, did you?" she asked, though it was clear she didn't honestly mind. "No matter, just grab a piece of prey. While you eat we can hash out how we want this training to go."
"No, of course not! Not really, we just stayed up a little talking," he promised, quickly dipping his head to her. Maybe he had been up a little later than he should have been, talking with the other apprentices, but he was too ashamed to admit he'd been restless all night. It was his first night sleeping alone and even with his brother right beside him he didn't realize how lonely he would be without his mother. Luckypaw couldn't tell him mentor that, though, or she'd be disappointed in him. Heathersong seemed nice, but he remembered all too clearly how fierce she had looked when she was hunting him down in their old camp and fighting with that angry FallClan cat. He didn't want her to growl at him like that!
He turned on his heel and hurried the last few paces to the pile, shuffling through it until he found the smallest shrew. His stomach was churning with nerves now that he was waking up and he was afraid he couldn't eat more than a couple of bites. "Okay," he mumbled as he darted back to her side.

Heathersong's gaze followed Luckypaw, a small smile curling up as she realized what was the matter. He seemed nervous, though she couldn't help but wonder why. She wasn't known to be especially difficult or harsh as a mentor, and had known the tom as a kit when her own kittens were in the nursery. She was completely unaware that Luckypaw remembered her spat with Jayjack or their game of chase in camp so unkindly. Instead, she simply sat and slowly chewed on her robin, allowing Luckypaw to grow more comfortable in her presence.
Finally, she finished her breakfast, piled the feathers up for the kits to play with, and turned to Luckypaw. "I like to talk to my apprentices before we get started to make sure we're on the same page. The way I train you will be different from how I was trained in FallClan, so I like to make sure we both understand that ours is a judgement-free relationship. Unless you're doing something that puts yourself or others in danger, I won't raise my voice to you. So, now that that's out of the way, let's talk about today's training."
"We are a nomadic clan, so it's incredibly important that we are able to track, forage, and hunt well. We aren't immune to attacks and predators, though, so you'll need some basic combat training too. Why don't you tell me what sounds most interesting to you, and we'll start there?"
Was he in trouble? Luckypaw committed to being brave in her eyes, standing straight as she sat him down to talk, but there was a lump in his throat. No matter what she said, he had to stay strong. If she let on how scared he was, she would never want to mentor him again.
A... judgement-free relationship?
That wasn't what he had expected. The cream-tabby blinked a few times as he processed her words. Did she really mean it? He was instantly reassured to think she wouldn't get angry with him, or at least would be calm while doing it, but it was hard to believe any cat could be that patient and forgiving.
"Um- tracking sounds interesting," he began cautiously, searching her gaze for a sign he'd made a bad choice.

"Then tracking it is!" purred Heathersong, vaguely aware that he was uncomfortable but not understanding the depth of his anxiety. "You ready to head out, then? I figure I can show you some of the ways we communicate with each other while out scouting and on patrol too!" Her attitude was bright as she stood up and carried the feathers to the nursery area, then turned to Luckypaw with an encouraging smile. "So you know that we don't really have a territory, per se," she began, leading camp behind as she picked a random direction and started walking. "Since our territory changes so much and is so vast, it's important to have a way to communicate with each other even if we don't see one another. That's where the stones come in. In different parts of the territory, we have small stacks of stones that indicate different things. One formation might tell warriors that there is prey nearby, or another might warn of predators in the area. So it's important that you memorize these formations for later. Got that so far?"
Luckypaw nodded quickly in agreement and followed her out of camp. He hurried to keep in step with her, look around at the territory, and remember everything she was telling him, but it was hard. "Stones," he repeated. "We use stones to indicate prey or predators or stuff. Okay, got it." Luckypaw froze at her side as he stepped in something squishy and slowly lifted his paw, afraid it was something dangerous or disgusting, like mouse guts. Instead, he found he had stepped into a suck of black mud that clumped between his toes. He shook off his foot and awkwardly hopped over the patch.
"Uh, Heathersong? Have we built any stones in this territory yet? I'd--- I'd like to see one if that's okay."

Heathersong couldn't hide a small smile when she turned around to find her apprentice leg-deep in mud, but managed to contain her laughter. "I think some warriors found traces of a fox's scent to the east and built a cairn there to warm about it. I can show you that one, if you want." She considered the potential dangers of taking him into an area of known predators, but decided that making him more comfortable by letting him guide their progress would ultimately make training him easier.
"Why don't you lead us east?" she asked, making the trip count as double training. "You know how to determine which way east is?"
Luckypaw's eyes widened. The mud on his legs was suddenly forgotten as he felt a wave of fear. "Is-is that safe?" he ventured, tucking his tail between his legs. He hoped she didn't yell at him for being a coward. He knew warriors were supposed to be bold about this stuff, but a fox? He had to face a fox on his first day? He wasn't convinced seeing a cairn was worth that. The cream tom gulped and slunk forward a few steps to study the ground beneath his paws and the sky above.
"Um... east is the direction the clouds move in?" he suggested hopefully.
