Go figure. It was just his luck, wasn't it? That the rude, ignorant little flea-brain who assaulted another kit at the Spring Equinox gathering was now his apprentice. Way to go, Chimerastar. Keep on making those fantastic life choices and enable bad behavior. Firetooth grit his teeth in frustration, pushing aside a pile of herbs to make room for another nest in the already cramped hollow long they were temporarily using as a Medicine Cat Den. When Mistralpaw had initially bounded in to begin her first day of training, the ginger tom had ordered her to get material for her nest without a second of hesitation, hoping that would buy him enough time to pull himself together.
Dear Starclan give me strength, he silently prayed, nearly bumping his head on the log's roof for the fifth time that day. And if I absolutely HAVE to do this, he added in his thoughts, already hearing his apprentice's pawsteps approaching, then give me a sign that she's really the one you want.

Mistralpaw had been...shocked when Chimerastar told her she would be Firetooth's apprentice. A medicine cat? A medicine cat? She was going to be deputy someday, leader someday! She wasn't ignorant to the honors that came with her new position, but it wasn't what she had dreamed of for as long as she could remember, and getting used to that and learning that her mentor would be the very tom to call her stupid and humiliate her at the Spring Equinox would take some time.
When she had first walked into the makeshift den Firetooth was using, she had almost immediately been sent out for materials for her nest. She didn't tell the tom her own nest was only over there, but instead slipped out silently. He probably hated her. She gave a bitter chuckle under her breath. Just her luck, really. Abandoned to SwiftClan, and now abandoned to a cat that hated her. She knew her adopted mother was proud of her, but that gave her little joy. It didn't take much to make Heathersong proud of her kits.
Tugging her old nest behind her, the small she-cat slowly returned. She loved her nest, filled with special bits of feathers, moss, and rabbit fur. It was wholly hers, and she wouldn't give it up, even if Firetooth demanded it. "I'm back," she called, her resolve strengthening as the scent of herbs filled her nose. She wasn't one to be told off lightly, and if Chimerastar thought this was the right path for her, she would do it, Firetooth or no. "Where do you want me to put my nest?"
Firetooth's instinctual response was to snap something along of lines of 'Where do you think?', but he held his tongue. Instead, he only vaguely gestured towards the open spot he made for her with his ginger tail, his back turned to her as he busied himself with reorganizing his herb stores...again. Because Swiftclan was currently in the process of moving, he really didn't have much on paw, which was annoying when compared to the large, well-kept herb stores he had when he was Earthclan's Medicine Cat. Of course, he was lucky to even have this position to begin with, so maybe he shouldn't be complaining. He supposed that he'd have to ask other Medicine Cats like Graythorn or Fawnheart for some of the rarer stuff, but right now...
"Finish up quick," he ordered, his voice even and emotionless as he suddenly stood up, turning towards the exit of the den with a sweeping motion. Before Mistralpaw could even open her mouth to ask a question, he continued: "We're going to go foraging, see what's around here. Best way to teach you that I can think of; what's already here is what I went over in my lecture, if you even remember it."

Mistralpaw didn't wince, didn't even react when he snapped at her. This would be the way it went, she supposed. Carefully placing her nest down so as to keep all of its disparate bits together, she then quickly turned around and hurried after Firetooth. Of course she remembered his lecture, but she didn't say as much. Her fire was gone, simmered down to a dull ember. She knew well what burdock leaves looked like, that they were used to treat uninfected wounds, that they were to be chewed up before being applied. She didn't say any of this, however.
Her tiny legs hurried to keep up with Firetooth, wishing, just for a moment, it had gone differently, that she could have a mentor that respected her and wanted her to succeed as much as she wanted to succeed. With a quiet sigh, she resigned herself to her fate. "Are we looking for any herbs in particular, or just what we can find?" she asked, unable to hide her curiosity despite her sullen mood. She picked up her pace, filling the distance between them as his strides were longer than hers. She cast a last glance at her nest, wishing for the uncomplicated life she'd had only the day before, but then turned forwards, determination filling her gaze. She would do this, and not only that, she would do it well.
"Whatever we can find," he answered almost immediately, not bothering to look back at her or even slow his long strides through the forest. If Firetooth wasn't going so fast, he might have noticed what a beautiful Newleaf day it was; the birds singing their cheerful songs overhead as they swooped from branch to bud-covered branch, with tiny green shoots peaking out from the piles of dead leaves underfoot. Far above them, fluffy white clouds floated carelessly along across an endless blue sky. "Preferably," the Medicine Cat suddenly continued, "The rarer stuff if we can find it. At this point, I've got enough herbs to cover bumps and scrapes for the next moon. But if Chimerastar is going to keep pushing us like this, I'm going to at least need a small pile on-paw for more serious injuries."
As he talked, the tom's eyes scanned the trees around him, staring intently at their bark rather than the ground. It came off at somewhat odd; most cats thought that a Medicine Cat would be focusing on the earth when searching for herbs. Mistralpaw had appeared to have fallen silent in order to let Firetooth work in peace, which he secretly appreciated, though that tiny, annoying voice in the back of his mind nagged him that he was supposed to be teaching her. After a few more moment of silence, he let out a sigh and spoke again. "We're looking for Alder trees, Ash trees, and Aspen trees. Newleaf came late this year, so many useful herbs haven't sprouted yet; trees are the best bet for something useful. Specifically, Alder bark is useful for swelling and infection, Aspen bark is good for panic attacks and stress, and Ash roots can help resist the effects of snake poison when chewed and applied to the bite." His voice was matter-of-fact; informative, but overall disinterested.

Mistralpaw had expected him to brush off her question, and when he did she just gave a sign and picked up her pace again. She found she was breathing hard, her ragdoll legs much too short to keep up with a lankier cat's fast pace. Still, she didn't say anything. If he thought he could treat her like a kit, she would stay silent and let him. After their 'training' she would visit one of the Mountain Clans and find a mentor that would actually teach her. After all, they all swore an oath to heal and protect, regardless of clan borders so she was confident someone would help her.
She was so absorbed in her thoughts she only caught the tail-end of Firetooth's lecture. "Would you show me what they look like, and we can split up to find it?" she asked, interacting with the tom for the first time since their meeting that day. "That way you can have some peace and quiet and we can double up the amount of herbs we find." Her voice was practical, ignoring the way she assumed - rightfully so - that the tom disliked her strongly.
I wish, Firetooth silently admitted to himself, though he at least knew better than to say that to his apprentice directly. He had always been a solitary tom, preferring to work quickly and quietly by himself. For the most part his methods worked; Starclan knows he doesn't loose patients often. Mistralpaw was probably just using this as an excuse to get away from him anyway; pretend to be useful when in actuality she would just go goof around like she always did. He knew her game, and he wasn't about to let her out of his sight.
"No," the tom replied almost instantly, his voice stern and sharp. "This territory's new for everyone; I'm not about to get chewed out by Chimerastar if you run off on your own and get hurt. You're my responsibility, so you stay close to me, got it?" It was a rhetorical question, and he didn't even bother to wait for her response, cutting his apprentice off once again to continue; "Besides, it's hard to tell the difference between trees when their leaves haven't grown back yet. When the forest in green again, I'll set a day aside to properly teach you which tree is which, but for now just let me handle it."

"So now I'm, what?" she mewed venomously, the sharp question escaping her before she could pull it back. "Your pack animal? If you wanted someone to follow you around and carry herbs without any training, you should have asked a stronger warrior than me." She fell silent, resolving to stay silent the duration of their training regardless of how he poked or prodded her. He wasn't worth her time or energy. If he was convinced she wasn't trustworthy enough to navigate their territory herself, let him have to suffer her presence.
"You're my apprentice," Firetooth snapped back, shooting the young she-cat a cold, hard glance. "My job is to show you what to do. Your job is to listen and do as I say. Being a Medicine Cat isn't a game, Mistralpaw; it might be a respected life, but it is far from an easy one. I'll teach you what you need to know when I think you're ready to learn it." With a huff, he turned his attention back to the search at paw. What a stubborn, feather-brained kit! She didn't have the slightest idea of how important this job was. It wasn't as simple and carefree as learning herbs all day; the life or death of the entire clan was in their paws. If she can't get that through her thick skull... Firetooth shook his head. He couldn't dwell on the past, not right now. He had a job to do, like he always did.

Being a medicine cat isn't a game, Mistralpaw...
The she-cat saw red bleed into the edges of her vision. Did he really think she was treating this like a game? As much as she hated her mentor, she was entirely devoted to her position. The chance to serve her clan, to serve Chimerastar, in this capacity was not something she took lightly, but Firetooth couldn't know that. He couldn't know that because he wouldn't bother to take the time to get to know her. Shooting him a deadly look, she cast her eyes to the trees, blindly seeing without really seeing, as she fought to swallow the indignant rage boiling up in her. The only thing bringing her solace was the fact that she had a real mentor in WinterClan to train her later, after Firetooth was finished wasting her time. "Fine," she mewed, the word inflectionless and cold.
Firetooth didn't reply, instead stopping in his tracks and turning towards one of the trees standing in the woods, sunlight filtering down onto the forest floor through its thick branches. Strolling up to it, he leaned in close to inspect the bark, before lifting his front paw and start the claw at the tree. His scratches were clear and precise, as small chunks of bark fell on the hard ground in front of him. After one strike, a long-legged spider suddenly emerged from the crack in the tree, scudding down the trunk and towards where Mistralpaw was standing idle nearby.

Mistralpaw looked past her anger in order to watch Firetooth carefully as he stripped the bark from the tree and didn't miss the spider when it emerged from the tree. "Careful, Firetooth," she mewed dispassionately, as though it didn't really matter to her if he was bitten or not. "I might not bite, but that spider will if you're not careful." When it began moving quickly towards her, she stepped to the side and allowed it to pass, keeping her attention focused more on her mentor's work than the creature. "So what is this tree? An oak? What does its bark do?"
