Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Fairytalekit had been brought into the medicine cat den to be put under observation. The kit had been playing with his siblings and while at first the kit seemed tough as he was able to play with his more rougher littermates it soon became apparent he maybe a little too unbelievably strong. He had a large gash from accidentally tumbling into a sharp rock, but never once cried or even seemed to notice.
Yellowmoon looked Fairytalekit up and down curiously, he was able to hold himself well, but she guessed he was doing so by imitating his siblings posture. She looked back at Brakewings, "I don't think he has the ability to feel, but I don't know if this is only some parts of the skin or all of him, but this will be a good lesson for you Brakewings. How about you find something dull and something sharp and just poke him and ask him when he feels it. If you go from head to tail without him say anything then we'll know for sure," Yellowmoon explained.
This fascinated her, she had never seen anyone simply born without any ability to feel their own nerves.
Brakewings examined the kit carefully, starting with his leg. It was a rather large gash and bloody; he licked it a few times to clear away the blood, then applied pressure with his paw, keeping a careful eye on the little kit. He knew full-grown warriors that would squeal from him touching a wound like this, and he prepared himself for the tiny body to thrash about, but...
Frowning, the dark ginger tom straightened up and circled around his patience. Maybe Yellowmoon had the right idea here. His gaze flashed up to hers and he nodded subtly, retreating to his den and coming back with a thin stick. Maybe his weakness was just in his leg and some damage prevented him from feeling pain -- paralysis setting in, maybe, though he seemed to be able to stand so far. That wasn't normal. "Okay," Brakewings announced, then softened his voice, "can you wiggle your leg a little bit? I'm going to touch my paw up and down your leg and you tell me when you can feel it, okay?"
He patted Fairytalekit gently with his paw and the stick, then experimentally jabbed him with a claw.
Fairytalekit looked at his leg and wiggled it. At first he said nothing as Brakewing began to poke at him, but seemed to wise up that he should be saying something so he began to look back at Brakewings to see when he touched him, "I feel it. That time is your paw," He was clearly cheating, but he was too young to not be blatantly dishonest. But when Brakewing used his claw and he still responded in the same calm manner that seemed to speak the highest. Being touched by Brakewing's paw, a stick, and claw, there was no difference in reaction.
"That's amazing," Yellowmoon exclaimed, of course she wasn't exactly thinking of that from a medical standpoint and more so thinking about all that could be done to someone who couldn't feel. Brakewings could experiment whatever he wanted or maybe he could grow up to become a warrior who never felt pain. Brakewings could do whatever he or more accurately she wanted and this kit could guard him easily with the right fighting regimen.
"Hey could I grow up to be your medicine cat apprentice? All of this looks amazing, I think I would be really good at memorizing herbs too," Fairytalekit said.
Yellowmoon could feel all of her dreams in that moment shatter. He wanted to be a medicine cat? When he had no ability to feel and thus sympathize with any cat or even understand the pain they were in? He was clearly a born warrior or at the very least someone they could manipulate and he just wanted to throw away all that potential, it felt wrong. She felt like clinging back to Brakewings side telling him he couldn't accept Fairytalekit's offer, but mulling it over for a moment maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to have him closer to them.
Brakewings frowned, prepared to lightly chide the tom for cheating, but his mentor seemed too excited. Even if he was lying, it was clear the kit didn't seem to be feeling anything, which was strange, to say the least. Could he be a warrior if he couldn't feel anything? If he didn't know when he was hurt, and if he couldn't feel the ground shifting beneath his paws to alert the prey? With the kit lying to him, it was difficult to tell if he couldn't discern between the different types of touch or if he simply felt none at all. That worried Brakewings.
"I don't know," he meowed eventually, shifting his paws uncomfortably at the question. "Part of being a medicine cat is understanding what's wrong with a cat... feeling where their injury is, or when they describe a pain, feeling what that might've felt like. It's very difficult to be a healer if you can't do that." His tone was soothing, gentle, but firm. It was strange that Yellowmoon had nothing to say, but maybe she trusted him with this decision on his own. "Are you sure that's what you want?"
"I mean, to be a warrior I gotta know all the right ways to hurt someone right? So either way it will be hard, I might as well struggle with something I'm in love with doing," Fairytalekit said as if it was the easiest answer in the world. Given his small experience of the world though, in his mind this probably was an easy answer.
Yellowmoon tilted her head with a condescendingly sympathetic smile towards the kitten, he had no idea just how helpful he would be and how detrimental it would be for himself. Brakewings may choose him as a medicine cat apprentice for now, but ultimately he would be of better service to them as a warrior, get some brute force. But for now she would have to wait for the right cat to present them self. "Good choice, I think we should help examine him further though and do some special nerve testing," Yellowmoon said, light shimmering over her yellow eyes in excitement. There was so much they could test on this kit and with no supervision it was all too perfect. "Ohhh and maybe you can learn how to restrain a patient today. You can get plenty of crazies, remember that time Zephyrglade came in yammering about seashells? We probably should have restrained him."
