"Well it's as dangerous as you make it," Demonicchicken responded. "If you mind your own business, don't make any trouble, and stay off the clan's territories you're golden. It's the ones who can't stay outta trouble that run into problems." It would be safer, perhaps, to be in a group. But there would also be more potential for cats to make trouble, "I don't wanna fill your head with daydreams here, Chimerastar. It would be a risk to be nomadic. It's always a risk. But it's also a risk to settle in a territory. What if all the water is tainted? Or the area doesn't get enough rain? Or there is other predators around? There's risk no matter the choice."
"Trust me, I know the risks of settling," Chim replied grimly. "Staying in one place destroyed my old clan. I won't let that happen again." At first, he had taken it as divine intervention - but when his fallen family didn't come to confront him, he had begun to suspect it was something else entirely. He'd even been told it was a warning, a sign he should have picked up on, that would have informed the clans about the massive floods that were coming their way.
"I don't care if it's difficult, I just want to know if it's possible."

Demonicchicken nodded at that, understanding. "Okay, well, if ya want my honest to StarClan opinion," not that he believed in them. "Then I'd say it is possible. But you need to have cats who can be cautious, who understand the risks." The newly named tom shifted uncomfortably, unsure how his next statement would come across, "cats like... well like Fuzzypeach could be a problem. Heart of gold, to be sure. Truly a one in a million cat, but he's also naive and doesn't much care for rules and regulations. How do you propose controlling that? And other cats like that?"
He stiffened a little at Fuzzypeach's name, but he knew the other warrior was right. He was a mess, and as loveable as that mess was, he was going to be difficult to control when they were wandering between the different clans. He couldn't exile him, didn't have the heart to, and he couldn't drive away every cat that was a little too adventurous. "We can... redirect his energy," he proposed slowly, "let him get all excited by running ahead to find us a new place to make camp. Then he gets to explore and do what he wants, and when he comes back to camp he'll be so tired he will do as he's told."

"I'm sorry," Demonicchicken meowed, feeling as though he'd upset his leader when he saw Chim tense, "I know how close the two of you are and I really have nothing against him." He was still under the impression Fuzzypeach was indeed the best friend of Chimerastar. Perhaps that was why he was allowed to run a bit wild. But, Chim's answer was a good one and he nodded, glad not to have been snapped at over his statement. "He also appears to be good with kits, perhaps he'd be able to help the queens herd them?"
He waved off the apology, so focused on the problem at paw he barely even noticed the implication that he was somehow close with Fuzzypeach.
"Kits?" he echoed, staring blankly at Demonicchicken. It had never occurred to him that his not-very-close friend might be good with young cats. Honestly, there was a part of him that liked Fuzzypeach because he didn't have a mate or kits or family; he was all on his own, just like Chim, and maybe a small part of him hoped that the other tom shared his distaste for the little ones. But it made sense a cat with such boundless energy would like kittens, even if the knowledge sank like a stone in his belly.
"Of course. They'll appreciate the help. Some of those kits can be a handful," he said.

"In fact!" Demonicchicken continued, caught in his own ideas and excitement, "you could probably find lots of tasks for the more wayward cats. Like a cat tasked with elder car, Fuzzypeach for kits, some for carrying prey or herbs or keeping track of apprentices!" It wasn't his clan and he was crazy overstepping here, but the idea of being nomadic again had lit the fire of possibility and excitement in him and it was shining in his eyes as he spoke.
"I would appreciate having a cat to look after our elders." Chim's whiskers twitched in amusement. Their only elder was his ghostly grandfather, and he would be more than happy to have someone else worry about him. He was growing tired of being harassed. Even if Demonicchicken was overstepping, the light in his eyes gave the leader a confidence boost: he really did believe this lifestyle might be possible.

Demonicchicken nodded, seeming pleased and excited, even kneading the ground momentarily in his happiness. "Where would we all go?! The world is so big and I bet we'd have so much to see."
"I have no idea," he admitted, and the realization was so startling he actually laughed. He was almost giddy. "We could stay close to the clans, check out the edges of their territory... or we could go as far as we could. Just keep walking until we find some place entirely new."

"New," Demonicchicken echoed, voice taking on a slightly enchanted quality. "We could find somewhere no one has ever seen! New for us all. A true adventure."
"I never wanted to know what was out there before. It was never an option to leave." Oh, how tempting it was. They could explore new horizons the clan cats had never seen before. But even then Chim knew it was impossible. They couldn't defend themselves. Without the other clans nearly to chase off predators and supplement their fresh-kill pile with feasts, they would fall apart.

"There's always the chance, the choice," Demonicchicken meowed, though he too knew the issues they'd face out there alone. "But I know its most likely wishful thinking." There was a carefully casual tone to his voice now, as though he didn't want to address how much that was bumming him out.
The leader nodded regretfully. "We depend too much on the other clans. Maybe one day we can be alone, but I fear that day will come long after I'm gone."

"One has to wonder if we rely on them simply because we have been taught to. Isn't that why all clans stick together? Because they believe they are stronger together. Perhaps there is a different way." Demonicchicken didn't have much conviction in his words now, his excitement drained from him.
"Maybe there is, but it isn't just a lie right now. Our clan barely gets by as it is; we can't afford to leave everyone else behind. They support us when we need it most." Chim's ear twitched. Not that they had many allies.

Demonicchicken nodded, having nothing more to say on the subject once Chimerastar's position was clear. "Well, folly aside, what is the next step for SwiftClan? If you don't mind my asking."
"You know as well I, I'm afraid," Chim chuckled dryly. "I suppose we'll stay here until we're forced to move on again. I've been working on forming an alliance with our neighbors."

"That sounds promising," Demonicchicken meowed, trying to sound upbeat and excited for his clan. "Alliances are incredibly important currently, or so I'm given to understand."
"Sometimes they are." Chim waved his tail dismissively. "WaterClan had plenty of allies when the floods came, but not one of them lifted a paw to help us. The other clans only look out for themselves; they won't even join us in battle if they doubt they can win."
