Seven sunrises had passed since her own kits had come, and Sanguinerose looked outwardly every bit a content queen. The golden she-cat spent every waking moment tending to her little ones: nuzzling, grooming, crooning soft words of love to them. Yet she couldn't keep the pain from her heart every time her eyes skimmed over two of her kits: Earthkit and Mousekit. They looked nothing like the she-cat, and had names not given by her, for they weren't hers. No, those two kittens, only days older than her own, were the result of a kitting gone wrong. Their mother left the world to be with the Sun God, while their father now rotted in the prison, leaving the two babes with nothing in the world save each other.
Sanguinerose had taken the two into her nest as soon as she had finished kitting herself, and now raised them as her own, vowing silently to keep the truth from them until they were old enough to bear it, and had run it by their father first. They would be raised with a doting mother and four other kits to run and play with, hopefully never feeling the loss they suffered so young.
That they didn't feel any sorrow meant a lot to Sanguinerose, but she couldn't rid herself of the ache she felt in her heart for Lionpride. He'd lost his mate in a moment that should have meant joy, and in his agony lashed out. Yes, it was against the High Priest, but now he was deprived of the only remnants of his mate he had left: his kits. All six kits had drifted off to sleep once the sun set that afternoon, but her thoughts had kept Sanguinerose awake and, with a semi-guilty glance back at her nest full of resting kittens, she slipped out of the nursery towards the prison.
"I need to see Lionpride," she murmured quietly to the prison guard, praying to the Sun God he'd see her request amusing enough to oblige.

Lionpride
SunClan Warrior
The Loveable
Lionpride hadn't been the same since loosing Aconite. After being allowed to bury her and Purekit who hadn't made it, he had been returned back to prison until Littlestar was certain he wasn't a danger to anyone else... but more importantly himself. The normally energetic and outgoing tom seemed dull and lifeless like his essence had been drained. He hadn't even been allowed to go to the nursery since then, as everyone that came to visit him walked on eggshells afraid that he would snap and loose it again. It wasn't all that far fetched when you took in his ragged appearance. He seemed to be giving up, destined to join his mate in StarClan if something didn't change. The only thing getting him through was his daily visits from Satinlights, his sister who brought him stories about his kits and updates on how they were doing
Lionpride hardly even looked up as Sanguinerose was allowed in, assuming she was here to take away the rabbit that still laid untouched beside his nest. He hadn't eaten anything but what Littlestar had forced down his throat since that day. His cheeks had become sunken in, his long shaggy fur barely hiding his body as it began to loose it's heft

Her words dried up in her throat when she took in the ragged tom in front of her, so much changed from the strong, muscular soon-to-be father that had been in the nursery only a few sunrises prior. Sanguinerose felt her heart speed in her chest as she considered how to even address a tom in such a condition as his. Did she empathize with his sorry? Snap at him to toughen up? Insult him? She was simply at a loss.
Looking down into the prison, she finally decided to sit down, her tail curling over her paws. The scents of her kits and his wrapped around her like an ephemeral blanket, soothing her even in such a dank place. Finally, after a small infinity and only a moment she inhaled and began to speak, apparently to no one in particular.
"Mousekit and Earthkit are doing well. They're hungry little things, but you wouldn't know it from their sizes!" She chuckled softly, the sound too loud and out of place in such a location. Then, she continued. "They are getting along well with my kits, though their eyes aren't quite open yet. They wriggle all around and make getting comfortable way too hard. It's like sleeping in a nest that never stops moving. Still, I wouldn't trade it for anything." She didn't hide the happy sigh that left her then, her eyes closed as she reminisced. "You know, some of the other queens didn't think I should come her, in case you attacked me or tried to do something rash that might make my milk dry up. I didn't care, though. You should know about your kits, even if...even if Aconite isn't here to see them with you."
She inhaled deeply, feeling cleansed after her monologue. Peace settled over her, and she felt that even if he never spoke to her for the rest of her visit, she would leave feeling content that she had done what she could to help the mourning tom. Slowly opening her eyes, she looked at Lionpride, hoping she would see something, some spark of life in his dull eyes.

Lionpride listened as she spoke, slightly lifting his muzzle as the name of his kits emerged from her lips. He hadn't been told who it was that was nursing his kits, only that one of the queens had taken them in and that they were doing well. He supposed they were afraid that if he managed to make it out of the prison that he would seek them out and harm them. Sure e was depressed, but it was only natural. The love of his life stolen away in an instant, one of his kits not making it, and not having been able to lay eyes upon the two that were still alive.
But as she mentioned Aconite, he felt himself shatter just at the mere mention of her name "all we wanted was a family" tears had welled up in his eyes, but he hadn't moved any closer knowing that the guards would take any sudden movements from him as an attack "we made it through so much together, only for this to happen... but you know what really hurts the most? It was being so close to finally having everything that we ever dreamed of and having it ripped away" he placed his head back on his paws, obviously upset. He wasn't sure why he was saying all this to her...
"I'm not going to hurt you Sanguinerose... " he trailed off closing his eyes "Thank you for coming to tell me about how they are doing. Everyone walks around acting liking im just going to sudden flip and attack them. The only one to even talk with me is Satinlights.... I haven't even got to see them yet" he sniffled letting his nose burry in the fur of his own paws. Not only were his kits without a mother, now they had been deprived of their father as well

Sanguinerose listened in silence, her heart mourning for the tom and his mate. It wasn't easy, the life the Sun God had given them. Still, their God wasn't overly capricious, and being His chosen cats, there was no reason for such suffering if some good couldn't come from it. She took solace in this and, after allowing a companionable silence pass between them for a minute, spoke. "Would you like to see them? ...your kits?" She couldn't deny the fiercely protective burn she felt at the suggestion despite knowing Lionpride would do nothing to hurt his own kits. "I could bring them over to visit, right now if you want." She didn't mention that she'd like to see someone try and stop her. They were his kits as much as they were hers, and the poor tom had a right see them.
"Though I might not be able to keep the whole herd of them from following." She chuckled softly, her heart melting at the thought of her little ones back in their nest, warm and safe.

Lionpride looked up, his eyes brighter than they had been since that day, but the glimmer faded just as quickly as he realized that it wouldn't be allowed "I want to see them, its just..." he looked over to where the guards stood knowing there was no way the queen would be able to sneak two kits inside...Beside his mother's words rang in his ears clear as day. If he relaly loved them then he would wait until he had recovered before going to see them. The last thing they needed after loosing their mother was to be introduced to their father that was holding it together by threads
"I don't want them to see me like this... Their first memory of their father shouldn't be going to visit him in prison...."

"They're too young to understand what prison is, and I'd like to see a guard get between a kit and their father," mewed Sanguinerose, determination radiating off of her. "Plus," she added somewhat conspiratorially, "What they don't know won't hurt them." Still her gaze softened when she saw how distressed Lionpride was and relented. "But I will bow to your judgement. They are your kits, after all. Maybe when you're...feeling better, we can come visit?"
