Dovewish let her paws guide her. She wasnt sure where she was going, she was just going. It was late and she couldnt sleep, once again. The night terrors continued much stronger than before. The moon was almost full, shining on the entire forest like a giant spotlight. Her fur was matted and unkempt, her bright blue eyes were dull, and if it weren't for her thick fur, one would be able to count her ribs. She didn't look good. She looked half starved and sickly, though she was not physically ill.
Before she knew it, her paws had guided her to the lake. She looked out over it, the moon and stars reflected over it, giving it the illusion that the sky was drowning. Drowning she thought. Her blue eyes narrowed. That's what she wanted. She wanted to end it all. She had no reason to live. Everyone would be happier without her. Thistlestar wouldn't miss her. He would move on with his family. With his mate and kits. She would forever be alone so this was her only escape from her broken heart - from the future of broken hearts. She was basically dead anyway. Her spirit had died that night Thistlestar told her he didn't love her. Now, all she had left was her body and that was already wilting away. She glanced behind her toward the Springclan camp. This was it. It was all going to end now. Her secret buried at the grave, or rather, lost at the bottom of the lake. She stepped forward, feeling the icy cold water sting her paws. She kept walking until the water was lapping at her chin, the cold water taking her breath away. She felt the drop off on the tip of her toes. One more step and she would be swept under by the current. Closing her eyes, she went to take the final step...
The moon was particularly bright tonight, glowing seductively, wooing the Springclan leader towards the dark forest. It wasn't uncommon for the leader to leave for a night walk, though for the first time in a long time, the purpose of this walk was purely pleasure. As the dusty pelted leader moved through the under bush, he reflected on his past and present. He had almost forgotten how freeing a walk with no intention felt like. There was space to breath, to think, to let go of stresses and concerns and just let the night air clear away the weight on one's mind. For so long, his night walks were purposeful, with the ultimate goal of finding Bee again. It would be many moons of pacing through Springclan territory, long hours lost to a cause that seemed so hopeless. But alas, his prayers had been answered and Bee returned. Then everything happened so fast.
Catching up with Beedust and the time they missed together, the surprising new of kits and now the impending start of his new family. There was far too much on the leader's plate for him to find the time to enjoy a walk. With his mate relocated now to the nursery, time had opened up for himself, not that he used it for that purpose. He much rather be at Bee's side to witness her reactions as the kits grew within her, but something in him beckoned him away. Maybe it was the way the moon lit up the night sky, or the way the stars twinkled that night or maybe the small tug in his chest that lurched everytime he glanced at the camp entrance. What ever it was, Thistlestar trusted in himself enough to know he had to follow it.
Having sank deep into his thought, he hadn't realize how much time passed, enough to get him on the path towards the lake that divided Summerclan and Springclan. The distant sight of the lake made the leader smirk, his mind wandering to the newly appointed rouge leader Ratstar. The two had only met so briefly, but it was enough to leave an impression on the Springclan leader. Deja vu smacked the leader hard across the face as he took note of a figure in the distance. For a moment, he thought of the peculiar Summerclan leader, thinking maybe he was once again at the lake's edge, ready for another conversation, but as Thistlestar moved closer, he recognized a more familiar coat.
"Dovewish?" He breathed with pleasant surprise, walking up with new found excrement to see his friend once again. The leader had not realized until that moment that it had been some time since he spent some time with his friend. Realizing the opportunity, Thistlestar took it with smile, but that smile fell as he noticed as the she-cat stepped into the lake, her steps purposeful yet robotic as she submerged herself into the water and towards the strong current. Confusion laid across the leader's face as he watched on, but his body moved forward, his strides picking up in speed and length. As he began to run, Dovewish proceeded with no hesitation, nearing the current. "DOVEWISH!" Thistlestar called loudly, his voice booming around them with feverish command. Before she could turn, he lunged forward, his heart sinking as he realized too late he had launched himself into the lake himself. Luckily, his paws found the lake bottom and his head remained fairly above water thanks to his taller stature. In the moment of relief and realization of his safety, he reached out, clamping his jaws behind the she-cat's neck yanking her back towards the surface with a fearfully powerful force. Everything in his body screamed to get out of the water as panic took it's sweet time to set in. Memories of the flood flashed past his eyes, but he blinked in vain attempt to shove the memories aside, even for just a moment. A moment was all he needed to focus on the task ahead. With one more giant heave, he flung the she-cat onto the lake's edge, dragging her away from the water and to the safety of the sand.
"Dovewish..." He breathed, his body heaving heavily as he fought to control his panicked breathing, trying to focus on the wet she-cat before him. As words of concern began to form in him, he took a good look at the she-cat and froze, his impending words turning into stones that remained stuck in his throat. The she-cat had always been light and thin, but well built, but the soaked pelt revealed the disappearance of most of her lean muscle. The difference in her form was so drastically different, it rendered the leader silent with confusion and shock.
Dovewish heard the cry of her leader and halted. However, the sand beneath her paws seemed to melt away and the current sucked at her but luckily, Thistlestar had grabbed her scruff just before the current could rip her away into a watery grave. She was shocked by the sudden heroic action taken by the tom that seemed to fear water the most after his incident. She let him drag her through the water, disappointment mixed with relief and a little bit of regret tugged at her along with the waves of the lake. She collapsed when she felt the shore beneath her paws once more. She looked up at the leader with her dull blue eyes, noting the shocked expression on his face and meeting his gaze with a look of numbness. Had he really been so busy with Beedust that he hadn't noticed the poor shape Dovewish was in? She supposed she couldnt blame him. He was always busy nowadays and her thick fur covered her thin frame. However, now that her fur was plastered to her body, every bone was visible making her look much older and sicker. "Why did you save me?" She growled, shooting an uncharacteristic hostile glare at her old friend. "I didn't need saving!"
Thistlestar listened on to Dovewish's sudden and shockingly hostile reaction. He had never seen his friend so much as raise her voice at him or anyone around him. The reaction surprised the leader, but not as much as the implication behind her words did.
"Save you?" Thistlestar repeated, his voice low and steady as his mind reeled to the moments prior. There was something instinctive in his actions to jump into the water and grab Dovewish. He didn't understand it in the moment, he just followed his gut, but it wasn't until the she-cat spoke did the pieces come together in the leader's mind. His expression grew stern as he took in his friend, his leader cap quickly replacing his friend cap as he acknowledged the she-cat, a look of deep intimidation and concern over took the more casual, vulnerable one he expressed just moments before "Dovewish, what was you intention in going into the lake?" The words were slow and careful but there was a commanding tone that made it clear that the leader expected the truth and nothing but the truth, though he feared he already knew it.
"Just going for a dip" she mewed, her voice rang with sarcasm as she shivered. "Your smart, Thistlestar. I dont need to tell you what I was doing" her voice was hard and emotionless. The look in her eyes, the tone of her voice, it was like looking at a completely different cat. This was not the cat Thistlestar had once called his best friend. She was turning into a monster right before his eyes.
The abrupt and harsh response made the leader flinch. As much as his defensive nature wanted to rise up and protect his character, his heart stopped him, reminding his that the cat before him was not a enemy but his friend despite the sudden changes. "Why are you doing this?" His words matched in harshness, but were backed by powerful emotions of concern rather than the hardness Dovewish's words carried. "Dovewish what is going on?" His voice rose slightly, louder than usual but he stopped, staring at his friend for a moment longer before speaking up again, this time his words barley audible "You can tell me what is going on Dovewish, we are friends..."
Dovewish felt the frustration rise inside her, her broken heart aching. She shot to her paws, her fur plastered to her thin body. "Dont you get it, Thistlestar? Are you really that blind? Can you not see that I love you!!" At the last words, her gaze softened to a surprise that she had finally told him how she felt. Her heart was racing and her dull blue eyes searched his for some kind of reaction, though she wasnt sure what she was looking for...or rather hoping for.
As the she-cat furthered her harshness towards him, Thistlestar could feel his pelt tingle with anger though fought hard to hold back knowing full well that this was unlike Dovewish, but it didn't take long before her final words shocked him into stunned silence. The effect washed over him like a cold current taking him under and he felt himself forgetting to breath for a moment. His green orbs bounced back and forth from each of Dovewish's eyes, searching for... something, he wasn't sure what though.
"D-Dovewish I-" He started, stumbling on his words as his mind began to wander back the the past. All their interactions together were always so friendly, so great, but had the tom really been so blind to over see any signs of affection or more? As he searched, his mind could not register any red flags and he felt himself grow much frustrated with himself "Dovewish I-I have a mate." He finally pushed out, though the words were sadder than they should have been simply because he knew that the truth would hurt the she-cat more than she already was feeling but he wasn't what else he could say to appease the storm the brewed inside his friend "That doesn't mean I stopped caring for you as a friend though." It was like his mind was back on track and words finally began to materialize on his tongue.
"Yes, I know you have a mate. I'm not blind!" Dovewish growled. "If she hadn't returned-" she was going to say that they would have been together if Bee hadn't returned but love takes two and she didnt think he felt the same so her point would have been invalid. Still, her heart hurt and all she wanted to do was die. She looked at Thistlestar with orbs of blue fire but it was clear that despite her glaring looks, there was so much hurt that lied in their depths. "Forget it" she mumbled, dismissing her unfinished sentence and lowered her gaze. "You...you just...you were so perfect..." her face was beginning to melt from the firm look of anger to the soft, saddened expression of a broken heart. "I...never felt that way before...you made me feel...free...and wanted..." her voice shook, heavy with grief. "That night you told me she was your mate...and that you were expecting kits with her...that was the night I was going to tell you...to tell you that...I would follow you to the ends of the earth...that never again would you have to sleep alone...that...you had someone that loved you with all of her heart..." Tears formed at the base of her beautiful blue eyes. Her throat burned and she shivered uncontrollably. It wasnt from the cold. It was the anxiety, sadness, and frustration that pulsed through her, feeling like poison. "But I didnt realize I was not the only one..."
Thistlestar flinched at the growl but remained calm and still. Any other cat who would have spoken so disrespectfully towards him would have received a reaction far from that he gave Dovewish, but he could see the pain, the hurt in his friend's tired expression. He could not find it in him to shut down the painful lashes her words brought on him. He watched on in silence, giving the she-cat the space to release her tensions, air out her grievances and pains. Watching her broke his own heart. All he wanted to do was rush to comfort her, but he knew that it would only bring more confusion and frustration, more than he had already unintentionally created.
" I am sorry Dovewish, I take full responsibility for all of this..." He finally spoke up after a long moment of silence. "I never communicated to you what Bee meant to me." His deep green eyes fell in a moment of shame, staring down at the dirt below him that was wet and muddy due to his soaked pelt. "You had been so open with me, so truthful in your struggles and pains as our friendship grew. It was something I admired and respected you for greatly because I didn't have the ability to bare my soul the way you did. I didn't know how to at the time." His stomach flipped as he spoke, abruptly pausing as he tried hard to find the next words and force them out of his head. The notion was uncomfortable and foreign, but he knew Dovewish deserved at least his honesty. "Beedust and I were close before she unexpectedly left Springclan, so much so that when she left I realized how deeply I cared for her.
I waited and patrolled almost every night in search of a scent, any trace of her for many moons. I couldn't tell anyone. I had just become leader after Blackstar stepped down. Everyone needed me to be a strong figure for Springclan especially during the harsh leaf-bare we received. I had lost my only friend and I was alone... until you." He stopped, meeting the she-cat's blue gaze with his own which were bright with emotions "You were there for me always, and for that I am so grateful. I owed you the truth, my truest emotions and my struggles especially after you opened up with yours, but Dovewish... I was... scared." His words quieted as spoke until they were just a breath. His brows furrowed deeply as he fought the strong urge to hold back his words from flowing further and just changing the subject. To bare his true thoughts was uncomfortable. He was always used to being the rock, the strong one, the protector. To be in a vulnerable state as he was now made him nervous, unhinged and unsettled. Despite the uneasiness he pressed on "I didn't want to cave into the idea that I lost another person I loved." There was new strength in his words, a forceful one that made the volume in his words rise. "I am sorry I misled you because I was a coward in admitting the truth and the truth was that I was still in love with someone else and I couldn't let those feelings go."
Dovewish lowered her gaze once more, listening to his words. After he finished, she sniffled. "That makes us both cowards, then. My mother and father fell for each other but when we were born, they fell out of love for each other. The hate that came out of love was nearly sickening. I vowed to never fall in love because I never wanted to feel what my parents felt. I never wanted to know what love was and to lose it. Yet, here I am. In love and losing it. I was a fool to fall for something that doesnt exist." Her gaze hardened again as she looked up at Thistlestar. "You may think she loves you, now, Thistlestar. But you'll see. Love is just a word to describe a feeling you get before repopulating. It doesnt truly exist and eventually, it fades. Some sooner than others. Your love will fade and everything you thought you knew to be true will all be a lie. And then you'll know exactly how I feel. It's a shame I had to go through this to figure that out." There was a hardness to her voice, a darkness that was frightening, even for Doveiwsh. She couldnt believe the words that came out of her mouth. She couldnt believe that she was telling her one true friend that he would lose his love and that his love wasnt real but the retort felt bittersweet on her tongue. Despite his kind words toward her, she wanted him to hurt. She wanted him to feel what she was feeling at the given moment. Even if he felt bad for what he did, he would never understand until he felt it for himself.
A dark thought came over Dovewish. One that actually frightened her. The thought itself didnt scare her. It was the fact that she was willing to go through with it that frightened her. If she were to kill Beedust, he would finally understand. His love will die and he would be left with nothing. He would feel like a fool for falling in love because love hurts. If Beedust was lying at his paws, lifeless, he would finally feel it. How she would execute her plan, she didnt know. She wasnt even sure if she would go through with it. Her anger and pain was clouding her judgement and turning her into something that wasnt her. Dovewish was sweet, shy, and kind. The cat looking back at Thistlestar was a demon possessing the poor she-cat's body and mind. The sickly thin feline rose to her paws and looked sternly at Thistlestar, revealing the hollow former shell of what once was his closest and most beloved friend. "If you won't let me die, then I'm leaving Springclan...forever."
There was only so much a cat could take. Thistlestar luckily had a large enough capacity to handle the criticism, but things shifted in him once his mate was brought into the conversation. As soon as her intentions were questioned and honor taunted, a new wave of emotions coursed through the Springclan leader's body. He felt his walls build back up, his mind steel and his heart closing to understanding. His expression grew stern and hard and his posture straightened in response to Dovewish's barrage. A line had been crossed, one Thistlestar would have never anticipated but one that was unforgiving.
"Then you will leave," The his tone lashed out in a painfully collected manner, a threat lurking in the shadows of his words "Starclan knows that I will not take their responsibility of deciding whether our time is up here on earth." He stepped forward, closing the gap between him and the cat he once knew as a friend. "Starclan also knows that I will not tolerate the disrespect towards my mate any longer than I've allowed." These words carried a different weight, a different type of threat, one that rode on the back of a menacing hiss. "Every decision you've made up until this point was your responsibility; I will not allow you to place your misguided perspective of life into my own. I know my truths and I will fight for them no matter what anyone wishes to believe and if you can't accept and respect that, I think your decision to leave Springclan is a wise one."
Dovewish forced herself not to flinch at his stinging words. "Alright. Then I guess this is goodbye." She stared into his eyes, her heart aching. He really wanted her gone. She held back the tears as she turned and began to head out of Springclan territory...
(Don't mess with the people he loves. He goes dark. Never got a chance to get this side out of it since it takes a lot so this was freaking awesome)
Thistlestar could feel the burning need to protect Beedust rage within him, keeping him firm on his paws and unflinching, but inside, his emotions were at war with each other. A small voice in him urged to take it back, trying to find excuses for their friend and to stop her. So much history between the two flashed by Thistlestar's vision. The times they spent laughing, opening up under the safety of the moon, supported each other, teased each other, leaned on each other; everything came back to him, like a movie playing across a screen. It was until Dovewish's stormy gaze tore away from his own did his body relaxed and was released from it's emotion filled reigns. He stared after Dovewish, his expression melting into one of sadness. His body stepped forward before he could hold back, but he stopped himself after just one step. As guilt flowed through his veins, in his gut he knew this was the right move. With his family nearing their arrival and his mate shouldering the responsibility of carrying their kits, he didn't want her to face the wraith of Dovewish. Thistlestar knew he had to protect them no matter what. He stared on in silence watching as the remnants of his friend travel on into the darkness..
