Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Viperstream's pelt burned hot with embarrassment and a nervous smile appeared. "It was nothing really," he meowed rubbing a paw behind a ear. Seeing her wince, he jumped to her side to help her shift her weight. It was still too soon for her to move like she was. "Are you okay?" he asked. "The medicine won't kick in for another few minutes, Yarrowsong."
Thanks to Viperstream's quick reflexes, Yarrowsong was given immediate relief from her wounded paw as Viperstream weight allowed her to rest back on her haunches and get into a more careful and comfortable position. "Ugh- I'm sorry! I can be so mouse brained sometimes." She huffed in frustration, holding up her wounded paw in order to avoid the temptation of stepping on it again. "I got too excited and forgot I even hurt it- can you believe it? I forgot." She rolled her eyes while mentally chiding herself, but it was replaced with a smile. "We need to come up with a good story to tell the medicine cats when we get back. Something that would make them believe this was purely accidental and not because I was being reckless again."
The tom chuckled. "Of course we'll have to make up a good excuse," he meowed. Looking towards the treeline, he decided on an easy path back to camp. "We should probably start heading back, huh?" It was still early in the day so the sun was still high and beating down. If he remembered the way he got there, it wouldn't take them too long to get back home.
After a few minutes had passed by before Viperstream asked the she-cat how she was feeling. "Your pain should be lessened now. How's your paw feeling?"
A huge smile of relief shinned across the white she-cat's expression at the deputy's words and the two started for camp. The walk was quiet at first, mainly because Yarrowsong was so focused on minimizing the weight she was placing on her wounded paw, but as Viperstream said, the nasty tasting herbs kicked in and the pain had subsided immensely. There was some bugging pain, but it was tolerable.
Before she could vocalize her relief, Viperstream beat her to it and she beamed. "It feels practically brand new!" She meowed, stopping in her tracks to wave her paw around. It ached in protest but she paid no attention to it, giggling instead as she set it back down to the forest floor and proceeded at Viperstream's side. She stayed quiet for a minute as she wrangled with the multiple questions going through her mind but she finally settled for one. "How are you feeling as Springclan's deputy?" She asked curiously. It had been some moons now that the warrior took up the position, but she rarely got the chance to talk to him so she never had the opportunity to find out "You are always so busy and I rarely see you in camp. I hope Thistlestar isn't overworking you." She teased, knowing in fact that Thistlestar often worked himself more than he did to anyone else thanks to what his mate, Beedust, had told her in recent discussions.
Viperstream nodded his approval. Glad to see that old training was put to good use, he thought to himself as he watched her show off her newfound mobility. He shrugged casually. "It's not that. It's honestly not all that different from when I was one of the Trusted. Although there are times it can be a little overwhelming, but that's what I expected for the position; Thistlestar has been good to me" he meowed. His superior had their own affair to attend so it was only fair that Viperstream took responsibility for the menial tasks.
With that, though, it made him wonder if there were aspects of the quality of life he may have overlooked. Now would be a good time for some feedback... "I have a question for you, Yarrowsong: what do you think of the current state of SpringClan? Are there things you think could use some improvement, for example, how patrols are conducted."
Yarrowsong nodded along to the deputy's words, smiling along the way. She was happy to hear that the tom was taking the responsibilities well, though she really didn't need his words to confirm it. It shown in his day to day activity and attitude around camp.
The deputy's question too her by surprise but she was happy to go along, thinking hard on the question. "I think Springclan is doing fine." She spoke earnestly, her words more serious than she had ever been since the two's adventure started. "Prey has been plentiful, we are maintaining and building up alliances with other clans as we speak and patrols groups are organized and well planned." She blinked a few times and the seriousness vanished into a plume of sudden happy energy. "I think you are all doing an amazing job with leading Springclan... dare I say better since you stepped up!" She nudged the tom playfully, offering him a bold wink.
Viperstream smiled at the she-cat's words, but he couldn't accept the compliment. He was far too humble. "I didn't do anything special," he said graciously. "I only do what I am expected to. But I am glad to hear that things are improving, or rather good. I mean, it's not like my predecessors left in Spring in a bad place or anything." He looked down for a moment considering his next question, but nothing came to mind in the moment. He turned his attention back to her. "Thanks, Yarrowsong, for your feedback."
"No, but you aren't only maintaining that status, but also promoting more growth at the same time? Take the credit, you earn it." She offered, her words more gentle and firm that her usual cheerful banter. The seriousness died out quickly though as the she-cat gave another bright smile.
She glanced back to noted their closing distance to the camp. She swallowed hard as she stared off, her brows knitting tightly with concern "You can thank me by being on my defense when I confront Fawnheart and Softpelt with me paw." She laughed, a hint of concern trickled into her worlds despite her cheerful deposition.
(Want to start wrapping it up here? We can start a new thread for the two after the battle?)
He couldn't help it and gave in. Her words brought a smile to his face. "Fine, fine, I guess you're right," he meowed, putting his humbleness aside and accepting Yarrowsong's words.
He noticed that her energy changed from before. He thought for a moment before he spoke his next words. "Hey, don't worry too much or else your fur will fall out," he joked, an attempt to lighten the mood. "But on a serious note, I'll talk to them and explain what happened."
Seeing the Deputy submit to her words made the she-cat laugh, her smile bright and wide as she took visible pride in convincing the deputy. Pleasant surprise grew on the warrior's expression at the deputy's playful taunt. She could help but grin in awe. He did have a sense of humor under that serious and honorable mask he wore.
"You're right; I can't ruin my pretty coat." She admitted teasingly, twirling majestically as to show off her fur but wincing at the soft ache at her paw, reminding her of her previous wound. "Thank though, truly Viperstream." She finished off softly, staring up at the Deputy with bright, dual colored eyes.
The tom chuckled nervously, his eyes meeting hers for a brief moment before darting off to something else. He felt awkward in this situation "It's nothing really...it's all apart of the job." He wanted to say more but he felt that if he did, he felt that if he did, he would have been disrespecting his predecessors and all they had done. Fortunately for him, though, they were nearing the camp entrance.
"Hey, I want you to stay off your paws for the time-being, at least until after I talk to Fawnheart and Softpelt, and I'll come check in on you afterwards. Does that sound good with you?" he asked.
The she-cat smiled to herself as she pulled her gaze off of the deputy to see the camp entrance just ahead. Before her own concerns could return, Viperstream spoke up, his words authoritative but his words kind. Something in the statement made the butterflies in the warrior's stomach flutter for some reason. Yarrowsong perked up slightly but she pushed past the silly feeling with a smile "You got it Mr. Deputy!" She meowed brightly, winking playfully as she walked ahead of the silver tom, careful not to somehow, stupidly hurt her paw. The smile on her face remained though as she left the deputy's side, growing wider the further she left. A deep sigh escaped her as she did. It was refreshing to see this side of the Deputy and part of her grew curious to not only learn more but figure out what that strange feeling in her was...
Viperstream chuckled and smiled as he watched her trot off ahead of him. Now that was a strange feeling. He couldn't remember the last time he actually smiled and laughed like he did. Perhaps this was the first time he was truly being social? All those moons taking everything he did serious, it was came as a relief to just be happy for once. Maybe it was something about Yarrowsong that did it to him but he couldn't quite place what it was.
