Pantherclaw approached Speckledpaw after the ceremonies were over. She, like the rest clan, was still shocked over the death of Coalkit. She got told too that she was lacking in her training of Specklepaw. The words still echoed in her head. "If you were a good mentor your apprentice wouldn't have runoff on that mouse-brain adventure!" But had she been in his place, she knew what she would have done. She would have gone too. She was reckless as an apprentice and to tell the truth she hadn't really grown out of it. And worse yet, she was dying to see the broken wall and the great body of water beyond it.
With a deep sigh, Pantherclaw meowed, "We need to step up your training. I got in trouble too because of your adventure. If you," she paused and corrected herself. "If we don't do well your promotion will be delayed and I may never get to train another apprentice."
Speckledpaw barely heard her. He was still grief stricken by Coalkit's death and his fur was still sticky and full of sand from helping pull Blackberrypaw and Coalkit out of the water. He looked up when his mentor said that if he didn't step up, she wouldn't be able to train another apprentice. "My training was already delayed." He mumbled, his usually bright green eyes were now dull with grief. "I expected that, though. I deserved my punishment but you dont have to rub it in." He turned his back, wrapped his tail around his paws, and hung his head.

"I'm not rubbing it in," Pantherclaw said gently. That was the last thing she wanted to do. "What I'm saying is that both of us need to work together. I know you feel bad about Coalkit, we all do. But you can't blame yourself or anyone else over this. It was Coalkit's decision to follow you. You didn't drag him along against his will. And you didn't know he was following you." The rain kept pouring down on her. "I know you've been confined to the camp for the next week but that doesn't mean your training has to stop. We can practice your battle moves in the cleaning behind the elders den. But for now get your rest. We can work on your skills in the morning."
"Yeah, okay" was all he said as he made his way to the apprentice's den. He was suppose to be moving into the warrior's den tonight but that wasnt going to happen now.
Speckledpaw, despite his best efforts to get the sand out of his fur, had a quite uncomfortable and restless sleep - filled with dreams of drowning and uncomfortable positions. The weak light of dawn leaked into the apprentice's den, disturbing the spotted apprentice. He let out a sigh, not wanting to to face the day. Reluctantly, he rose to his paws and shook the bedding from his pelt. After a quick groom to smooth his knotted fur, he made his way sluggishly out of the den. His eyes met the fresh-kill pile but he didn't feel hungry.
Scanning the camp, he realized the spot where Coalkit had been laid for vigil the night before was empty. They must have buried him when he retired for the night. A lump rose up in his throat once more and made his stomach churn. Today, Pantherclaw was going to train him in camp since he was forbidden to leave it until Ratstar releases him from his punishment. He was usually excited to train but nothing sounded interesting or fun today. Training was the last thing on his mind.

Pantherclaw frowned when she looked out the warriors den. It was still raining from last night. Doing anything in this cold wet mess would be uncomfortable to say the least. If she had her druthers she'd stay inside in her nest if but for one thing. I might as well go out, she told herself as she left the den and made her way over to the dirt place. Coming back she didn't see anywhere in the camp that was dry other than under some low bushes but they wouldn't do for training. She decided she'd tell Speckledpaw they'll wait until the rain lets up unless he wanted to train in this.
Seeing him outside his den, she walked over. After getting a good look at him, she noticed he still looked dispirited. "This rain is awful and it makes our camp's gloomy spirits even worse," she meowed. "If you want to train, we'll do so but if you'd rather talk, I saw some dry bushes we can crawl under along the camp wall."
"I really dont want to do either of those things but I'd rather train than talk" he admitted, not meeting Pantherclaw's gaze. He just wanted to sit in the middle of camp and let the rain soak him to the bone.

"Very well then, training it is," Pantherclaw meowed. "We'll get wet but the activity should keep us warm." She led the way over to the small clearing. "You know the basic battling techniques, so now I'll show you some more advanced moves. This first one is for defense." She waited for Speckledpaw to get ready.

She could tell Speckledpaw wasn't quite tracking her but she figured he if really got into his training he'd become more engaged. "I'm going to show you the badger defense. This works great when fighting a badger but you can also adapt it when fighting cats too. This is how it goes." She padded back a few steps to make room then rearing up on her hind legs, she leaped forward. When she landed she did so on her hind feet. Spinning around, she came down on all four feet while snapping her mouth shut as if to bite the badger's leg. "Okay, that's it. Want to give it a try?"
"Uh, okay" he answered, taking a few steps back to also make some room. He stood on his hind legs, using his tail to balance. He was a bit wobbly but managed to regain his balance. He leaped forward just as his mentor had done but when he tried to land on his hind legs but the mud caused him to slip and he landed on his back with an "oof". Frustrated, he climbed to his paws, feeling the sticky mud clinging to the fur on his back.

"Well almost," Pantherclaw meowed with a slight smile. "I'd suggest we do this after the rain stops but you never know what the weather will be like in any given battle. So you have to be aware of the condition of the ground at all times. When the ground's all wet and muddy like this," she pawed the wet grass and mud for emphasis, "try splaying out your paw pads as far as they can go when you land from a jump. That can help you get better traction in stuff like this."
