Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Opalkit laid quietly, pressed up against his mother's bright and warm crimson pelt, watching the empty nursery. He listened to his mother's soft breathing as she laid in deep slumber. Despite his mother's powerful urge for a nap, he had all the energy in the world to play, but he wouldn't dare defy his mother's order, joining her in their moss bed. It didn't take long before Crimsoncrown fell into a deep slumber, leaving Opalkit to this own devices. Though everything in his body wanted to get up and leave, he knew he would get a earful if his mother woke up and found him gone. Boredom urged him to look around the empty nursery, taking in all the different sights as if it were the first time. Out of the corner of his, a sudden yet slow movement caught his attention. His small orange head rose from the moss bed, turning toward the entrance of the den to find a grey feather, floating gentle up in the sky before falling back onto the dirt floor. Opalkit's pupils widening as a powerful urge took control, making him sneak silently off the moss bed. His small short-haired body laid close to the floor as he carefully crept forward. With every step he took, he could feel his body quiver with anticipation. This was it, he was so close to his target. With one final pause, he suddenly leapt forward, his claws extended as he flew towards the feather...
Sharp claws dug into Stellarpaw's tail and she yowled it surprise and pain. Clearly the kit had misjudged his leap and accidentally got her tail. She spun around, fur bristling. "What was that? Who was that?" She snapped, her blind gaze searching pointlessly for the scource of her pain and her ears swiveled to detect the slightest sound. Her pupils were wide and cloudy, a bit spooky to someone who didn't know what blind eyes looked like.
The ravenous excitement of the chase blinded the young kit for him not to realize that an apprentice laid comfortably just behind the fallen feather. His powerful jump had been miscalculated and launched him farther than he had intended and into the tail of an apprentice. The yowl of pain shocked the kit into a frozen state of fear and he jump back a tail length, his fur standing high at end as he watched the apprentice suddenly arise and turn swiftly in his direction. The pair of cloudy eyes were unmoving but unfocused as the apprentice searched for the object of her pain. Opalkit stayed deeper in his frozen state of fear, staring fearfully into the pair of cloudy eyes. He had heard from other clan mates of a blind apprentice, but he had never truly seen her eyes. Up until now, the kit largely stayed at his mother's side or in the nursery, so this had been one of the first times out on his own without his mother's overly protective shield.
"I-I-I'm sorry." He spoke up, forcing the words to come out as the moons of etiquette training from his mother kicked in, but they were shaky with evident fear.
Stellarpaw's ear twitched as the high pitched voice of a younger cat hit her ear drum. "Oh. Your kit" she scoffed, flattening her fur as she licked the spot on her tail where the apprentice's sharp claws pricked her skin. "That explains a lot. What's your name, kit?" Stellarpaw wasnt easy to talk to. She always seemed to be grouchy over something, a real stick in the mud.
The apprentice's words did not offend Opalkit, rather made his exhale with relief, noting that the apprentice wasn't too mad at his mistake "Opalkit." He meowed quietly, still staring at the apprentice's foggy eyes as fear was replaced with unhinged curiosity. His mother always told him it was not nice to stare, especially at she-cats, but in this moment, Opalkit couldn't help but think if this moment counted, especially since the she-cat couldn't even see him staring.
While most cats relied on their eyes to see, Stellarpaw had to rely on her other senses which included an extra sense. A tingling feeling she felt when someone was staring at her. "Its not polite to stare" Stellarpaw mewed, bluntly. She stopped licking her tail and wrapped it around her paws. She looked at the kit as if she could actually see him. "Names Stellarpaw. I'm one of the medicine cat's daughters. My sister is Autumnpaw."
The unexpected remark of his behavior stunned the kit and he instinctively dropped his gaze for a moment, embarrassed for being caught, but it only lasted a moment before confusion replaced his emotions and he glanced back up at the apprentice in wonder "Wait, how did you know I was staring?" He asked curiously, forgetting all manners as he asked bluntly, far too surprised to remember that he was being too forward, at least by his mother's standards.
"Um...Well, every cat is born with senses. Hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste - the main five senses. However, we are actually born with six senses. Its hard to explain but have you ever had your back turned and felt the burning and tingling feeling that makes you think someone was looking at you? Well, when a cat is born with one of their main senses missing, they have to rely on their other senses and usually their senses become stronger and enlightening. So, when as I got older, my other senses strengthened including that sixth sense. So, I can feel when someone is looking at me." She explained to the best of her ability, hoping the kit would understand.
Opalkit thought hard on the apprentice's words, thinking back to the moments that he was out with his mother. He recalled the moments that he had scampered ahead only to stop and turn abruptly. He hadn't noticed, but everytime he did, his mother was always watching, her steely gaze was sharp and expecting. The realization made him blink in shock. "I-I think I have that sense too!" He meowed in surprise, looking back up at the apprentice's cloudy gaze. Opalkit couldn't help but shy away as he realized he was staring too long, now aware that Stellarpaw has the ability to sense his stare. "Does that help you a lot when you are training?" He inquired more, oddly finding comfort in the apprentice's presence, enough to keep him asking questions.
The blind apprentice nodded. "It does but I also have to be trained differently than the other apprentices. I have to be trained to fight with my other senses. In a battle, most warriors depend on their sight to know when their enemy is attacking and how they are attacking. I have to learn the sound of my attacker. While my sixth sense helps to feel their presence and if someone is going to sneak attack but when it comes to battling, I have to feel and listen. I have to use my hearing to know where my enemy is and I have to use feeling to know what kind of attack my enemy is doing. You may wonder how I do that. Close your eyes for a moment and I will show you."
Opalkit listened in quiet awe, slowly sitting down in the dirt as he took in the apprentice's words. Her sudden instructions made the kit flinch, but having been used to following instructions thanks to his mother's stern upbringing, he naturally complied and with no further hesitation, he shut his eyes tightly, shifting uncomfortably on his front two paws. He remained quiet for a few moments before remembering that the apprentice couldn't see "I-I'm closing my eyes now." He spoke, his voice trembling with embarrassment.
She purred. "Alright." She began doing battle moves. Her paws made soft thumps and scrapes on the ground, her breathing and heart rate rose as she flipped and turned. She also swiped at the kit, purposely missing so he could feel the air from her paws. After several moves, she stopped. "Did you feel the vibrations in the ground? Did you feel the wind of my attacks? Did you hear my paws hitting the ground? Did you know where I was based on my breathing, heart rate, and paw steps?"
Opalkit gasped softly as his paws felt the soft thuds on the dirt floor and soon following the scraps. He could feel his eyes search around behind his lids. The sights and and sounds began to confuse him as the apprentice shifted from what felt like side to side, his head bobbled around in sloppy attempt to locate the apprentice who had moved around based on the sounds. A small swoosh of air made the kit gasp and move back in surprise, falling back on his haunches in a poor attempt to dodge what ever move the apprentice had made, but the reaction was late. Had it been a real fight, he would have been thrown back. His amber eyes flashed open in shock and he stared at the apprentice with a new sense of awe
"How do you do that?" He meowed in awe, rising back to his paws and approached the apprentice carefully. In his small strides, he realized how loud his steps were. It made sense now how the apprentice could sense him near by. "There is so much going on- it was hard to know where you were."
"That's why it takes a lot of practice. You wouldn't be able to get it the first time." Stellarpaw replied. Her voice was much more softer, now that she was warming up to the kit. She was usually grouchy but the way the tom reacted to her made her feel special and she enjoyed every moment of it. Most cats stared at her in fear or kept their distance. It was rare that someone actually took interest in what she did and could do despite her lack of abilities.
Opalkit grinned widely, growing more excited as the apprentice spoke hope into him. It made the anticipation for his own upcoming promotion grow in ten-folds "Do they train all apprentices like that?" Opalkit asked curiously, stomping on the ground harder as he noted the vibrations again.
"Unfortunately not." She frowned. "To teach an apprentice to heighten all of their senses at different times would take an apprentice a much longer time to train. I may not even be ready to be promoted along with my sister. There are so much I still have to learn. Also, not all cats know how to teach this type of training. I was lucky to have a mentor who did. Most cats like me are forced to become medicine cat. I wouldn't want to be a medicine cat but they are important to a clan so it would be nonetheless honorable. I just prefer to be a blind warrior." The apprentice rubbed her chin in thought. "You know...I could always teach you things that I'm learning. Then, you can be ahead of everyone when your finally old enough to be an apprentice!"
Hearing that apprentice don't learn this type of training made the kit visibly upset. Opalkit's ears fell with discouragement and he felt his shoulder's sagged a bit, but he listened on. Stellerpaw's story intrigued him and slowly his curiosity melted away his disappointment. It did not occur to him how difficult the apprentice's life was, how limiting it truly was to be a blind cat in a clan, but her perseverance was admirable. He couldn't help but stare at her cloudy gaze with awe and respect.
Stellerpaw's offer lit a new fire under the kit and he couldn't help but perk up in surprise "Wait really?" He asked, his tone had risen in blatant excitement. "You would do that?" The idea of being ahead of the other kits excited him. He could imagine the pride his mother and father would have in him.
The apprentice's compliment created a bright smile on the kit's face. Every fiber of his being buzzed in excitement. He had never been called "cool" before. Usually, the other kits teased him for always being at him mother's side or sticking sternly to the rules of the nursery. To the other kits, he was a stick in the mud and no fun to play with, so the change in perspective was exciting.
"OPALKIT!"
The familiar stern voice of his mother called out and he jumped back in surprise, his instincts to follow were strong enough to make him turn 180. Before he could run back to the nursery, he turned his head back at Stellerpaw "I'm sorry, I have to go." He meowed apologetically. The orange cat paused again, his brows furrowing slightly before allowing the question in his mind to be freed "Do you think we can do this again tomorrow?"
Stellarpaw perked her ears at the queens call, her cloudy gaze turned in the direction of the nursery and her nose twitched. When Opalkit had to leave, there was a hint of disappointment that crossed her expression but it disappeared as quickly as it came. Instead, a smile replaced it at the kit's question. "Yeah." She mewed, her voice sweeter than it had been the whole time. "I'll see you tomorrow, Opalkit." At that, the apprentice turned and headed away.
