Discordantpaw hummed quietly while she waited for her mother at the entrance of camp. Her mostly black pelt shined against the sun's rays and the warmth made her sleepy, triggering a yawn. The apprentice's fur was meticulously groomed and she looked pretty as a picture. She usually didn't put much attention into her appearance but, the minute she mentioned the mommy & me date to her half brother Bloodyrondo, the ginger tom had sat her down and groomed her for nearly an hour. The calico typically loved the attention but even she was growing annoyed by the end of it. Like, who cared if she had a tangle or two? Ah, whatever, she did feel pretty great now that all was said and done. Discordantpaw changed the tune she was humming and batted a pebble between her paws as she continued waiting.

Foxbane had gone through essentially all the stages of grief in the time since her return from the Regime. And now that it was all said and done, it seemed that she hadn't changed so very much at all. Well, she had, in a sense. More than any of her other litters, she'd been paying attention to her youngest. Then again, maybe that did have something to do with the crush she had on their father, or maybe she was just interested in being a half decent parent for one. Okay, no, Foxbane was a horrific parent, so really, any genuine care at all for her children was appreciated and probably a bit strange to the cats of SunClan.
The fox-furred feline was adorned in the stark white all Senators were granted, blizzard lines echoing across her pelt in dangerous and dazzling design, a mischievous gleam to her ivy eyes. She walked like she owned the earth, and in a way... didn't she? The feline had brought the Sun God into the clan, though not without a push from the deity. She had largely shaped SunClan into what it had become, had made a name for it through blood and fear. The Senator was a tyrant in her own right, and though that flame didn't burn so brightly any longer, she wasn't just a creature happy to fade into obscurity.
Hatred no longer ruled her heart, but her morality was still nonexistent, stemmed only out of conscious effort to appease Glowstar so far as she could manage it by avoiding harm to DayClan or to the Eerie family. Then again, she also intended Glowstar's family to be her own, now that the leader finally understood that she loved her in a more-than-friend type of way. But that was a conversation for her and others, not to gush to her daughter about.
Speaking of her daughter... she had a mommy-daughter 'date' of sorts with her. What once would have been unusual warmth now sparkled in her cunning gaze, smile softened a fraction from her dangerous smirk into something that suggested real care for the young feline before her. "Discordantpaw." She purred, licking between the apprentice's ears before pulling back a bit. "You're looking beautiful. Did you do your pelt yourself, or did you get someone to help you with it?"
"Thank you. Bloodyrondo did it, the paint too. He said I needed to look nice and pretty if I was gonna spend the evening with you." Discordantpaw purred back, resisting the urge to brush her cheek against her mother's. It was more out of reverence than any sort of fear. Foxbane had once be the leader of SunClan, after all. Discordantpaw wouldn't be rubbing up against Littlestar's leg either. She was a free spirit but she still gave respect when it was due, "I think he's kind of afraid of you," she snickered then stood up, "Anyway! What are we doing today?"
She had a lot of ideas. Hunting, Fishing, Sparring. She really didn't get much one-on-one time with her mother and wanted to cram all of those special moments into one day. Er, hour. It wasn't supposed to be a full day event but who really was going to be watching the time? Littlestar wasn't around and Bloodyrondo was worn very thin, he wouldn't think twice if she didn't show up to her afternoon patrol.

"Scared? After all I've heard of him, that is not how I'd expect him to react." Bloodyrondo seemed more the type to be arrogant to a fault, not really fearful, even if Foxbane did have a rather, um, scary history. Killing over two dozen cats would give you a reputation, she supposed, especially when a significant number included leaders or deputies, and equivalents, of course. Maybe she'd have to see it for herself, what he thought of her.
But that wasn't on the agenda for today. No, no, she had much more important things in mind. "I'm going to teach you SunClan's code." That seemed extraordinarily boring, yet the way Foxbane's smile stretched, turning conspiratorial and sly, suggested it wasn't that simple. "After all, no child of mine gets to go about not knowing all the loopholes of a rule set I created." Okay, she'd technically had help from her staff at the time, and some influence from the deity himself, but the Sun God hadn't told her no, and that was very much as good as condoning it.
"Of course, we'll also put some of those to the test. Rule number one. The word of the High Priest is law. Only the Sun can overrule it. Well, Littlestar isn't here, is she? Sooo, if she can't order us not to do something, meaning it's not wrong."
Discordantpaw's face fell just a little bit when she learned that Foxbane would be going over the SunClan Code with her. It seemed redundant. She knew it, everyone in the Clan knew it. But then she saw that crooked look on her mother's face, that extra toothy smile, there was more to it than just points A, B and C. The calico suddenly started to feel excited about the date. It wasn't quite what she had it mind but it would prove to be just as valuable.
"Loopholes? Sounds juicy." Discordantpaw said right before Foxbane started rule number one. She nearly cut the ex-SunClan leader off but she didn't look all that guilty about it. She waited until Foxbane finished her first lesson before speaking again though, "So, since Littlestar can't tell me not to, say, skip my afternoon patrol... That means it's okay if I don't show up. No code broken." It was certainly a more tame example that way Foxbane was getting at, but Discordantpaw wasn't really that old, "I love it!"

Foxbane laughed softly. "In principle, yes, if you were a warrior. As an apprentice, you MUST listen to any orders given by a full member, but that is addressed in a later rule. Assuming you were a warrior, you can argue you didn't break the code because Littlestar didn't give the order. On the other paw, Bloodyrondo, and maybe even Littlestar, will argue that he was directly appointed in her place to lead while she was away, so his orders should be adhered to. So you have to be careful when you do these things that you believe you can argue your way out of it if caught. This generally scales up to major things most often. You stole from another clan. That is allowed, so long as Littlestar hasn't forbidden it. Same with trespassing, even kidnapping cats. Littlestar can order you to release them, or return the prey, and you MUST do it, and it would also be breaking the code if you did those things and she'd previously ordered the clan, or you specifically, not to. If Bloodyrondo asks, you should listen, and you may be punished for ignoring an order, but it doesn't necessarily break the code." She smiled softly. Discordantpaw caught on quick.
With that, she motioned for her daughter to rise, and headed for the entrance to the gorge, the winding maze of tunnels where, if you made a wrong turn, you could end up walking back into the gorge.. right off the edge of a cliff if you weren't paying attention, and would almost certainly die. Luckily, most cats in SunClan knew how to get out, and apprentices were guided their first few times, until it became natural to follow the correct path. "That brings us to rule two. There is to be no worship of any god, deity, or spirit other than the Sun. Can you think of a loophole in here?"
"So I can't skip my patrol..." Discordantpaw had been given the order directly by Bloodyrondo himself, who all of SunClan knew was the acting leader in Littlestar's absence. There was no way around that. Oh well. She got to her paws at her mother's direction and followed after her with a spring in her step. She had never really thought about the loopholes in the rules mostly because she ignored them anyway. That didn't mean she openly broke them, no, she just did what she wanted when she wanted to and so far it seemed to work out okay. She still attended most of her training and most of her patrols. She just never worked that hard.
Discordantpaw wasn't surprised to be lead to the maze. She started to get excited; Maybe Foxbane would lead her to some secret exit or show her some special chamber!Any step outside of the regular path down here seemed brand new and dangerous. Even free-spirited Discordantpaw was wary of the maze ever since she got lost in them for two days shortly before being apprenticed. That being said, being with Foxbane put her totally at ease, her wise mother was sure to know these tunnels better than most anyone else. She was nearly zoned out when Foxstar asked her second question and thought about it for a minute or so before answering, "Umm... not really. At least, not unless Littlestar were to change it, or another God shows up calling himself the Sun God."
Discordantpaw could be clever, but she wasn't much of a thinker. She liked to leave a lot up the chance; it was always more fun that planning something out from start to finish.

"The code says you can't worship any other creature or being, but it says nothing about believing in them. You can believe and acknowledge the existence of any and all deities, ancestors, or afterlives you'd like. For example. StarClan and the Dark Forest exist, though that's not too much of a stretch considering how our afterlife incorporates them. Another example, Absum Lux's deity, Wanheda existed, at least until the Sun God devoured her. It's much like we acknowledge the Moon's existence as a deity. Yes, the code demands you put your trust and praise in the Sun God only, and follow his orders, but it doesn't ever prevent you from learning about other religions, or even meeting with their gods in pursuit of that knowledge. And, really, you're better off exploring and understanding all that you can in other religions. That's information that's useful to you, even if it is all second to the Sun." Foxbane explained, easily leading them through the rock and earth walls up, and up, and up, until they could see the Sun's light, stepping out into the snow covered forest. Behind them, only may's a dozen foxlengths away, the ground fell away down into the gorge SunClan made their camp. There was no secret trick with this maze, and there never was supposed to be. One way in, one way out. It was their safety from invaders, as a clan would have to stream down in limited number to the camp, and one wrong turn would take you to the hazardous openings above the camp itself.
This rule she'd just been talking about, it was one of the less 'loophole' ones, because there was no getting around the rule on it's face. The Sun God came first, that much was clear, but knowing other beliefs, even if you didn't follow them, or thought they were useless, was only a benefit.
"Have you met any of the other Gods, mother?" Discordantpaw replied, stumbling a little bit over an indent in the ground that she couldn't have possibly seen. The sun sometimes twisted the shadows in the caves to work against his chosen like some practical joke. She smiled at the thought and recovered her balance without missing a beat. Her paw-steps, even when she lost her footing, were extraordinarily silent. She was born with a natural stealthiness that rivaled some of the most experienced Warriors although she was her own foil by humming or purring all the time. Presently she was quietly purring, a bemused smile on her face, she was having a great time, "I'm just so curious! I've seen the Sun God of course but I wonder what the other ones are like."
Discordantpaw didn't give Foxbane a whole lot of time to reply before she spoke again. Even though she hadn't been asked to look for further loopholes, the mention of Wanheda being consumed by the Sun God got her thinking, "So, if Wanheda ever comes back, does that mean she's part of the Sun God? That would be awkward, she'd probably be all ticked off about getting devoured and stuff... but a God can't really die, can he? "
