Heathersong couldn't seem to shake the chill in her bones despite the warm sunshine breaking through the clouds above. The last few days had been overcast and cold, but it seemed like the sun had finally decided to come out to play. Still, the bite in the air wasn't ready to give up its time yet either and not for the first time the small she-cat wished she'd been born with a thicker pelt. Sure, she'd be hotter in green-leaf, but it would be worth it in this leaf-bare cold.
Looking around their ever-growing camp, the warrior decided one way to stay warm, if she wasn't going to bundle back into her nest, was to go out and patrol. Maybe she could find some new moss or down for her nest, so she'd be warmed that night. Glancing around, she tried to see if there was anyone else looking as restless as she felt, but wasn't sure if anyone fit that description. Shrugging, she started for the camp exit, wincing when she felt someone step on her paw. "Ouch!"
The sun returned and it the little ones must have sensed it in their sleep because Luckykit had been up since before dawn. He was tumbling about with Shatteredshine as he battled fiercely with the warrior, climbing onto her shoulders and pulling at her ears, growling softly as he dug in his tiny claws. She staggered across the camp dramatically, fighting back with quiet hisses and quick swipes, doing her best to keep from waking the rest of the camp as they played; it wasn't easy to contain her own excitement, but not everyone had to be up right now! The kit had woken her to play, he was smart enough to know not everyone would have appreciated it.
As they fought Shatteredshrine stumbled backward, her paws slipping for a grip as she crossed in front of the exit and her paw landed firmly on something squishy. A paw! "Oh no," she exclaimed, hurriedly freezing in her play to look at Heathersong, "I'm so sorry!" Her soft grey ears dropped back in horror and the kit, currently dangling from her shoulder where he'd nearly been dislodged, froze to stare at her with owl's eyes.

"And just who are you fiends?" growled Heathersong with mock malice, eyes sparkling with mirth despite her frigid expression and pinned ears. "Fi, fi, fo, fung. I smell the blood of a little one...." She trailed off ominously, following Shatteredshrine's example and keeping her voice quiet. The yelp when the she-cat had stepped on her paw was more of surprise than pain, and being as outgoing as she was it was easy to transition from shock to playfulness.
"You have stepped on the Great and Mighty Heathersong! Bow and tremble before me, and perhaps your infractions will be forgiven..."
Seeing the sparkle in Heathersong's eyes, Shatteredshine's own filled with delight. She cowered close to the ground, bending her head until her muzzle was tucked beneath her chest, back rounded and tail tucked between her legs. "She's really mad! Get ready to run before she gets you," she breathed to the kit, then cast her eyes upward. "Oh Great and Might Heathersong, I am so sorry to have offended you! I did not mean to hurt you, great and honorable warrior," she cried quietly.
Luckykit dropped to the ground and hid beneath Shatteredshine's elbow, his short fur standing on end. He had to escape, but how?! When?! He backed up a few steps, slowly, a nervous whine in his throat.

Heathersong gave an evil chuckle, tail lashing back and forth. "Your praise pleases me. I will allow you..." She trailed off, letting her sentence linger in anticipation. "--five seconds before I hunt you down!" She swiped her paw in front of her, clearly avoiding the others, and bared her teeth. "Run, run, as fast as you can...." She hoped she wasn't scaring Luckykit too much -- the little one seemed a little frightened, but she wasn't sure how much was a game and how much was real. She watched his reaction carefully before actually moving to ensure he was okay.
She sighed heavily in relief, "oh thank you, thank you--- five seconds?!" Shatteredshine turned to the kitten urgently, nudging him onward. "We need to go, run! Don't leave me behind or she'll get me!" With another push, Luckykit spun around and took off, the she-cat hard on his heels. They quickly neared the side of the camp before the warrior cried out and dramatically flipped to the ground. "Owwww, I'm terribly injured, Luckykit! You'll have to stand behind and fight her off while I escape!"
His little heart was pounding as they raced away side by side, pretty sure this was a game despite the anxious thrill in his veins. As Shatteredshine fell, though, his stomach churned as he slowed and looked at Heathersong with his eyes wide, and gulped. He sure hoped this was a game, but suddenly she really did look mad....
