The sun was just barely peeking over the mountains, covering Summerclan's territory in the soft dawn light. While most of the camp was just beginning to wake up for the day, three cats in particular were already awake, with a wonderful surprise in store for their clanmates. Tucked safely within the Nursery, Mudthistle was purring louder than she ever had in her life, grinning from ear to ear as she pulled four tiny newborn kits in close to her chest. "They're so beautiful..." she whispered in awe, looking up at her mate Crimsonlife and her surrogate father Graythorn with tears sparkling in her eyes.

Redkit (flame) - she cat with a dark ginger tabby coat with two small white markings, yellow green eyes
Graythorn was pleased when he found out Mudthistle was with kits but he couldn't believe the day had finally arrived. These kits he helped deliver were his adopted grandkits! Being a medicine cat he knew could never have offspring of his own but he couldn't have been prouder than if they were of his own flesh and blood. "You eat this and rest now," he meowed softly to Mudthistle as he placed a borage leaf near her head. "You're going to need all your strength." Then turning to Crimsonlife his tone became more stern. "Don't stay too long, she needs her sleep." Then he slipped quietly out of the nursery.
Crimsonlife heard what the medicine cat had said but missed his tone. All his thoughts were focused on his mate and new family, who were greedily suckling at her belly. "They are beautiful," he replied softly as he moved in closer. "That's because you made them." He gave Mudthistle a soft lick between her ears. His heart swelled in his chest as he watched the newborn kits.

Mudthistle didn't hesitate to eat the herbs her adopted father placed in front of her; she knew better than to argue with him, even though she disliked the taste of herbs, and on any other day would insist that she was perfectly fine. Except today, after all that, he had a fairly decent point. Half of her wanted to stay awake and just stare lovingly at her newborn kits as long as she could, while the other part of her wanted to sleep for the next three days straight. Purring as Crimsonlife moved closer, she smiled and nuzzled into his chest. "One son and three daughters," she mused, her voice somewhat hoarse. "I'm sure they'll be quite rambunctious, just like us..."
Ratstar waited awkwardly a short distance from the nursery, shuffling his paws in the dirt as he awaited news from the Medicine Cat. While he really wasn't the family type, and knew even less about the birthing process, he felt obligated to check in with Graythorn on Mudthistle's condition, considering these would be the first kits born under his leadership in Summerclan, as well as the first new kits of Greenleaf. From this point onward, he was positive the nursery's population would be growing at an exponential rate. Hearing pawsteps, he lifted his head as the older tom stepped out of the den into camp. "Oi," he called out gently, unable to read Graythorn's perpetually grumpy expression. "How's the young gal doin'? We gots some new additions yet, all happy an' healthy?"

Graythorn was tired from helping deliver the kits. "They're all fine," he said as he stretched his back. "Four kits, three shes and one tom." He let out a yawn. "If you want to see them, don't stay too long 'cause Mudthistle needs to rest." He waved his tail as he headed for his own den. His nest was calling to him, he needed sleep as well.
"You're probably right," Crimsonlife purred. "I just hope they're not quite so bad." Memories flooded his mind with details of his kithood. A few made him cringe, especially the first time he met his future mate. He was so ... so... what the word he wanted ... obnoxious. Yes that's it. What did she ever see in him? He sighed. That's all past history now. They had a bright future to look forward to.
Ratstar led out a breath of relief that he didn't even realize he was holding."That's good to hear," he purred happily, before winking as best as he could with only one eye, at the tired Medicine Cat. "Congrats, gramps. Ya sure are gonna be busy from 'ere on out." After a moment, his playful attitude mellowed out, and he stood up with a yawn. "Nah, I'll leave the poor gal and 'er kits to rest. Should probably catch some Z's of my own." He paused, glancing over at the other tom, with a small but warm smile. "But seriously, though. Congratulations, Graythorn. You've got yourself a good family."
"Already regretting some of your life choices?" Mudthistle snickered. She was trying to stay engaged with the conversation with her mate, but exhaustion was slowly winning as it became harder and harder to keep her eyes open. But not yet. There was still one last thing to do before she finally got some well-deserved sleep. "I've come up with names for them," she mewed proudly, pointing at the single brown tomkit beside her chest. "The tom is Grasskit, and his twin sister" - she pointed to a near-identical brown kit beside him - "Will be Skykit. And, since I'm too tired to be creative, the golden girl will be Yellowkit, and the ginger one, the one that looks like you, will be Redkit."

The name "gramps" took Graythorn by surprise. He was just less than a year old when he adopted Mudthistle and now he's a grandfather! He smiled to himself thinking he was probably one of the youngest grandparents around. It made him feel more mature and older than he really was. "Thank you and when you get a chance, stop in to see them. I'm sure Mudthistle and Crimsonlife would be pleased."
It was true he regretted some things he had done in his past but not all. "I don't regret becoming mates with you," Crimsonlife purred. "And the names you've chosen are wonderful, even the color ones. There not bad at all. My first name is a color after all." He leaned in and sniffed each kit in turn. "Now you get some rest like Graythorn said. And while your sleeping I'll go out and catch you something wonderful to eat. How does a nice plump rabbit sound?"
"Of course I will," Ratstar replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Gotta give the happy couple my well-wishes. I'll catch ya later...gramps." Letting out a loud yawn, he grinned and padded back towards his den, satisfied that Summerclan had four new members of its clan family.
"I know you're first name is a color, that's what my inspiration was," Mudthistle giggled, letting out a warm purr as she watched her mate interact with his new kits. She could see parts of him in every single one of them. Her eyes fluttering closed, with a heavy breath she let her head rest onto the soft bedding, adjusting her position and curling around her kits until she was comfortable. "A rabbit...sounds nice..." she mewed, already trailing off to sleep.

Crimsonlife smiled one of his biggest smiles ever. He was the happiest cat who ever lived. There before him laid his mate and family. He leaned in close and gave Mudthistle a big lick on the top of her head. "Sleep now, beautiful one. Get your rest." With that, he left the nursery in search of the rabbit he promised.
It was well after sunhigh when he returned with a rabbit. Not the plumpest one he'd ever seen but a nice one especially this early in Newleaf. It took him a little longer because he missed the first rabbit he found. The speedy creature was too close to it's burrow when he charged. He won't tell Mudthistle about that one though. Crimsonlife proudly trotted across the camp with his catch, noticing a few appreciative glances from some of his clanmates. I bet they wished they've caught this rabbit, he thought as he ducked inside the nursery. "Dimmer tine!" he announced through the fur in his mouth.
