Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
( This is just a thread to hopefully explore the dynamics of DayClan's Class System among the apprentices. Keep in mind higher ranked cats get to boss around those of lower rank, but it's only temporary, as they'll be assigned a permanent class based on their attitudes upon promotion to warrior. You don't have to join in, I'm just pinging you in case you want to. c;
As far as luck went, Laughingpaw, laughably, hahahah... had none whatsoever. The young tom, who was already missing the lower half of his right foreleg, half his tail, and had been made blind in his left eye, all due to Foxbane, not to mention both his parents, one of which was Eternalstar, and all his littermates, were dead. It just seemed like the cherry on top that strangely optimistic apprentice ended up as the lowest possible class he could be for his age. Maverick. He could be conscripted into servitude, as his class designated him as such already, forced into marriage, punished at will, branded, and really, the only power he had was to boss around someone of a Forsaken class. There were none of those at the moment, however, which made him the bottom of the barrel. He wasn't alone, of course, Mysterypaw had the unfortunate luck of a low temporary rank, though there was much to be said for the fact that there were only two other Mavericks in the entire clan. Wanderingwight and Leucisticcrow. For anyone of even the Peacekeeper class, these four were really the only possible 'punching bags' as it were.
It wasn't all bad luck for him though. The red tabby was the strongest apprentice in the clan, despite his challenges, and actually, stronger than quite a lot of warriors already too. From all the stories he'd heard of his father, and what little he had caught about his mother, he suspected they'd be proud, and that brought a bright gleam to his cerulean gaze.
For the moment, the apprentice was simply sitting around in camp, carefully cleaning his pelt, left paw drawing gently over the left side of his face. Laughingpaw had a lot he could be upset about, from his life thus far, to the rank he'd been assigned, but still, he wore a smile. As had always been his mantra, he wouldn't let those who wanted him to break win. Not Foxbane, and not anyone in the clan who wished him ill either.
The class system had seemed like a great idea at first. A system ranking your dedication to the clan.
Unfortunately apprentices got there’s randomly. No merit went into Mysterypaw’s and it made the fluffy black she cat bristle. For no other reason than stupid Bad luck she could get picked on or worse and only through promotion could possibly get out of it.
Mysterypaw hated it, she’d begun settling into DayClan at last for this new crap to be thrown her way. She wondered if this was Glowstar’s way of punishing her for her initial tantrum upon arriving in DayClan.
Whatever if anyone tried to hurt her because she was a maverick through luck and nothing else she would defend herself. She shouldn’t have to put up with it because of luck.
Since the announce, ent the furious young she cat had been angrily stomping back and forth. The beginnings of a small rut starting to form as she did so. Her fur was bristling out, making her look a lot larger.
Finally not even her anger could keep her going, so she dropped down beside Laughingpaw panting slightly. “How are you so calm? You’re the last cat here deserving of this fox dung yet you’re not acting any different,”
Laughingpaw paused in his grooming to turn his head to Mysterypaw and offer a welcoming sort of smile that brightened up his face and highlighting the dark amber cores that burned in the center of his gaze. "Not much we can do about it, right? We get what we get, and then the content of our character is judged, and we get a permanent rank upon promotion. The way I see it is that it's all up from here." He offered, shrugging slightly. No, he didn't like it. Not at all. It sucked, to have to follow each and every order given to you, where your only respite was to ally yourself with others of your rank, at the risk that your association would look badly on you in the future. "The Peacekeeper and Socialite apprentices have to live with knowing they could mess it all up and end up where we are, and the Imperials are in an even worse spot, they can only go down, and all the warriors of lower ranks they boss around could suddenly become their superiors if they acted up too much. That must be terrifying, to be worrying about disappointing someone and that hurting you in the future. Us here, well, the worst that happens is we're stuck with this, right? And if that's the case, we've already dealt with it all. And the fact is, we're almost guaranteed to end up as Peacekeepers, just by being half decent in our everyday lives. Wanderingwight and Leucisticcrow, from the rumors I hear, are scary and unempathetic cats. If we show even a bit more care than them, then we're certain to be the average warrior at worst, and anyone above us from there is supposed to be even more kind and loyal than us. So, this is all just one more challenge to face."
Buttercup was one of the very lucky apprentices. Not only was she chosen to be an animal whisperer, she was given the rank of Socialite temporarily. She was a bit jealous that her sister had been given the same destiny but with a higher rank but neither of the two sisters fought to be better than the other and it was quite a relief. She didnt want to have to fight with her sister. The pretty and petite ginger tabby she-cat let her turquoise eyes wonder around the camp until they landed on Mysterypaw and Laughingpaw. She remembered trying to befriend Mysterypaw when the black apprentice had first joined Dayclan but Mysterypaw had been uninterested and moody toward Buttercup. While Buttercup still felt a little sore toward Mysterypaw for treating her unfairly, Buttercup couldnt hold it against her. Her own mother abandoned her here and now Glowstar's new system had left her at the bottom of the ranks.
Windchaser was Buttercup's mother. The ginger warrior was not only an imperial but she was also part of the immortal council and a bright brigade and was still moving up in the ranks. Many cats saw Windchaser as a little rough around the edges and serious about her duties but Buttercup knew that her mother was wise and kind in her own way. She taught Buttercup to remain modest no matter her position in the clan. Now, Buttercup was a socialite. One rank down from her mother. It was now the time to show her mother everything she had been taught. She knew communicating with the lower class can not only keep her in the socialite class when she is promoted to warrior but can also build friendships over this dumb system.
Collecting herself, Buttercup made her way over to Mysterypaw and Laughingpaw. She began to feel anxious for the fear that they would treat her with hostility for her rank. However, even if they did treat her with hostility, she was still a socialite. She could do more to them than they could to her if she had to or wanted to. Once Buttercup reached the two apprentices, she offered them a warm smile. "Mysterypaw, Laughingpaw." She greeted in her sweet little twang of a voice. "What's up with you guys today?"
Mysterypaw's temper cooled a bit at Laughingpaw's words. But she still let out a huff. "Well if it's based off of scariness I'm doomed, my mother is a fiercesome intimidating fighter, my sister is an assassin, I can't just be a nicey nice cat. I want to serve my clan, but I want to be strong and scary and scare off all of DayClan's enemies! But I can't do that if I'm going to be punished for trying to become strong and scary like Wanderingwight,"
At Buttercuppaw's voice Mysterypaw tensed turning and eyeing the she cat. "Waiting for someone to rain on today, since you know we're stuck bottom of the barrel thanks to luck." Mysterypaw spat, fur fluffed out. "Are you going to be the first to bring the rain?" Mysterypaw asked suspiciously.
Buttercup lowered her ears at Mysterypaw's stinging words. She knew Mysterypaw deserved a higher rank than what she was given but it was beyond Buttercup's control. Technically, Buttercup could make them her servants but that wasnt very characteristic of her. Personally, she didnt like this new system. She didnt like seeing clanmates that used to be equal to her, now they were below her and thought she was their enemy. "Mysterypaw, I'm not your enemy. I dont like this system as much as you do." This was what Buttercup was afraid of. With the clan being divided, it will cause clanmate to fight and the clan could end up falling apart.
Lilacpaw had saw her sister move across camp and over to the group of other apprentices and followed her. Her head was poised high and her satin soft fur stirred like soft flames brushed up against the winds. Her tail tip twitched in a short greeting to Buttercuppaw, "Hello everyone," She said. Right on cue to be the rain. She tried her best to remember what her mother had said. Being an Imperial didn't mean she should boss everyone around. Even if it felt appropriate... Buttercuppaw should be out researching animals and shouldn't Mysterypaw and Laughingpaw be doing more than just sitting around? That was never how DayClan was as they were known for their nature of relaxing and playing rather than making themselves useful around the clock. But Lilacpaw found herself wishing that things were more strict and rigid. DayClan finally seemed to be picking up that they needed to strive to be better with the class system, why stop there?
Still Windchaser's words echoed in her head, she would give her moms way a shot. Be respectful... "Would any of you be interested in joining me in a patrol by Nova Canyon? I have been bored out of my mind hanging around camp," She said. This could work, they would agree and she would still get what she wanted where neither would be lying around and instead be up and occupied.

Laughingpaw gave a slight, apologetic look towards Mysterypaw, acknowledging her point with a nod. He could have phrased that a bit better. "Well, if my father's anything like the rumors, he looked terrifying, and could definitely be scary when he wanted to be, but he was one of the Immortal Council and no one doubted that he'd have been an Imperial. Even Fia, who succeeded him, is Wanderingwight's daughter, and more than a little willing to jump to violence, but she's still a Socialite. No, it's not fair that you may have to work harder to overcome the challenges of who you may have been born to and any initial perceptions. But my best advice it to say screw everyone who wants to see you fail. Be happy, be you, don't get caught up in petty games, and if your intentions are to keep DayClan safe, then that will show, so don't worry about it too much. We're both Mavericks, so that means we're in this together, right?" It was probably rude of him to ignore Buttercup, but he wanted to say that one last thing to Mysterypaw before including her in the conversation more than just his initial wave of his half-foreleg, and his smile brightened once more at her comment of not being their enemy.
He could see the appeal of the system. Apprentices aside, the most loyal and least likely to abuse power were at the top, given tangible power and responsibility they were expected to use wisely, while the average cats, the Peacekeepers, lived their lives largely as normal, and the Mavericks were generally reserved for cats who the clan had high suspicions would harm them without care if they got the chance, the Forsaken reserved for cats who actually had betrayed the clan and proven they shouldn't be given even the little trust they had. He would have added something of his own when Lilacpaw arrived, and the tom offered her the same wave with his right leg. "How about in a little bit?" Laughingpaw requested. "I only got back from a patrol about an hour ago, so I'm still a bit tired." It was reasonable enough. Of course, he also did want at least a few more minutes to talk before having to get back to work. As a Maverick especially, he tended to get the brunt of apprentice duties, since every single cat could order him to do them, while Lilacpaw could only be told what to do by her fellow Imperials.
Buttercup returned Laughingpaw's bright smile, her ears perking once more. She swung her head toward her sister and rested a tail on Lilacpaw's shoulder. "We can do that later. Its not important right now." She knew how her sister felt but Buttercup also k ew that over-working the clan can have dire consequences. "Laughingpaw has already been on a patrol this morning. Let him get some food in his belly and regain his strength. Then we can go on that patrol you suggested."
Mysterypaw did perk up at Laughingpaw's words. Her fur beginning to lie flat and she gave him a slow nod. In this together, that was comforting.
When Lilacpaw entered Mysterypaw perked up even further. She would love a chance to patrol, she'd been busy lugging moss in and out of camp for most of the day. Cats seeing her large size as being useful to carry out the dirty bedding. And she would much rather a patrol.
But she was finding herself rather enjoying Laughingpaw's company. The tom was admittedly a bit naive she felt and a bit too optimistic, but being around him made her rage wash off her like rain. And with Buttercuppaw now joining the chat, she was finding herself more inclined to enjoy this talk.
"I've been doing nothing but cleaning all day, I would like a patrol. But first I'm sharing tongues with Buttercuppaw and Laughingpaw. After that we can go," Mysterypaw said.
"Yes, he just said that, Buttercuppaw," Lilacpaw said matter of factually, having a pet peeve about people repeating information more than once. She knew she should have been into sharing tongues, it was important, but at the moment she felt too impatient to stick around, she was itching to actually train or consume her time by being useful. If she sat around with them she could easily become an irritating presence by wanting to leave too fast.. It would be so easy to just tell them all they were going on her patrol though... She breathed in and then breathed out, no, she was going to at least try it her moms way for a day, she wasn't a quitter. "Alright, well, I can't exactly wait, you guys can stay behind, but if you take too long I'll command you to come," She teased before motioning in the direction of Keepers Mansion, "I'm going to hunt around Keepers Mansion while waiting so when everyone is ready I'll be around there," She explained.

Laughingpaw nodded along with Buttercup, looking slightly concerned. He didn't want her getting hurt. "We won't be long." He assured, already getting up to grab something he could share with the two remaining she-cats. While he did want more time to relax, he also didn't want Lilacpaw getting hurt. And that, no matter how much he was taxing himself, took priority. He wouldn't be able to face Windchaser if he just let her daughter run directly into a dangerous situation alone.
