Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Chim was not blind to the tensions that had begun to rise between his clanmates. They were arguing over simple things... borders and authority, whether they truly followed the warrior code or not, simple tasks that should both no one.... but he didn't know how to deal with it. He'd appointed a medicine cat and a deputy, that should be enough to appease his eager warriors for a while, but then what? Decisions had to be made and he wasn't prepared to make them.
Then there was the matter of prey. Chim looked down at the kill pile again in dismay. It was early noon and let it was still in a dismal state. Cats were trying hard, but the territory simply had not recovered enough to feed this many cats. The river was running fine but the fish had been swept downstream or killed and it was slow progress to return. But how could he leave his home again?
(I’m just going to have this be a, how her joins rp if that’s okay with you xD)
“Hello Chimerastar,” Zephyrglade greeted.
It had been a few weeks after the New Dawn gathering and hearing about how they stationed in WaterClan and were rising up with past WaterClan members he had left home in DayClan to come see if he could join SwiftClan. It was difficult finding their border markings, but one he did he was surprised by how much it was like DayClan that he could just enter without fear of some cat sinking their claws into him.
“I’m Zephyrglade in case you don’t remember and was I was hoping to join SwiftClan.”
Wildrain was new to this whole clan thing and getting used to her new name was difficult. She had been a loner before one of the clan cats had persuaded her kits to join the clan. She didnt trust this 'clan' to properly take care of her kits. To her, it sounded more like a cult so she went with her kits. While it has been shown to her that it wasn't quite what she expected it to be, she was still cautious about everything. Keeping her kits close to her, sleeping lightly in case of danger, watching the movements of every cat passing by. She wasnt sure if she will ever be able to fully trust the clan but at least she was beginning to relax somewhat.
Her deep gray eyes focused on Chimerastar as he sifted through the prey pile. With Wildrain's over protectiveness of her kits, she had not volunteered to go out and hunt but a part of her wanted to show her skills toward the clan that had been caring for her and her kits. With a worried glance at her playing kits, she gathered up her courage and padded up to her leader. "Chimerastar. I can go out and hunt if youd like" she offered, reluctantly willing to leave her kits in the camp with the Swiftclan cats. It was the least she could do. Besides, it seemed like they needed help. However, just before Chimerastar could say anything to Wildrain, an unfamiliar cat approached them. The pretty black she-cat took a step away from Zephryglade, unsure whether he was trustworthy or not.
His ear twitched back toward the she-cat as he rose and headed toward him, but Chim ignored her: he had seen the queen around enough times to know she was too preoccupied with her kittens to help out. He was doing his best to be sympathetic to her feelings, even if he couldn't fathom why any cat would rather spend time with kits than other cats or alone, and left her to her own devices. He was caught by surprise when he realized she actually was approaching and glanced up at her, surprised by the offer.
With his attention turned on the she-cat, he didn't notice the warrior coming up on his blind side. The voice made him jump and he swore softly under his breath as he turned to glare at Zephyrglade. Oh, he knew that voice, and sure enough, he recognized the tom in an instant. "I thought you had crawled off and died somewhere," he grunted, not too unkindly. "Sure, welcome back." He turned his head again to face the former loner and gave her a nod. "I'd appreciate it. Mind taking Zephyrglade with you? I'll tag along and keep an eye on him."
Wildrain wasnt sure about having Zephyrglade with them but at least the stranger would be with them instead of in the camp with her kits. "Yeah. I guess" she grumbled, clearly unhappy with the decision. "I suggest we try the river again. Maybe the fish have returned." She wasnt sure if they had but she heard about the fish being swept down steam from the floods. It was worth a look. After all, fishing was Wildrain's strongest skill.
"Ha, no" Zephyrglade responded honestly to Chimerastar before dipping his head in appreciation for being allowed in. He lifted his head back up to full stature, he had an offbeat aura about himself. His eyes danced with mischief and trouble with such an inviting gaze it was like he silently was asking anyone he looked at to be his partner in crime. Yet his happy go lucky smile was assuring and disarming.
"Sounds great, I haven't fished here in forever, but I could always dive deep if lack of fish are an issue," He offered. His smile creased into something more devious, yet his question was innocent, "By the way, what's your name?" For a moment his eyes seemed to gleam a coppery shade, but the shine dimmed as soon as it came.
She forced her fur to lie flat when he mentioned diving into the river if they had no luck. Was that a challenge? Was he implying that she was a lousey fisher? He acted like he was the only one who could catch fish in the river. "Wildrain" she mewed bluntly with an edge in her tone. "Not like it should matter to you." With an irritable flick of her tail, she turned on her heels and headed straight for the camp entrance. She was going fishing with or without the two toms.
This was going well. Chim was already starting to regret ever matching the two up for this hunt; the former loner was too mistrustful, the former warrior too devious, and the clan was uneasy to begin with. He had no desire to sit and mediate between the pair, but he'd already agreed to come with them to the river. He glanced after Wildrain as she stomped off and stifled a sigh. "Well, let's get after her," he mewed to Zephrglade, glancing sideways at him as he started toward the exit.
"Watch your step on the way out, Wildrain, it was a cold morning and I expect there's still some frost."
Wildrain flicked her ear in acknowledgement but didn't reply. She stepped lightly as they exited the cave but just like Chimerastar had warned her, there was frost on the outer cave floor and she slipped, landing with an awkward thud on her side. With an irritated growl, she climbed back onto her paws and lifted her tail as to silence anything the toms were going to say. "Dont say it!" She warned, knowing one of the two was going to comment on her fall after Chimerastar had just told her to be careful. She continued forward, her shoulder bruised from the fall but nothing that would keep her from going out.
Zephyrglade stepped around, his tail high to keep balance, but decided to just keep his eyes ahead of him. Jeez, they both seemed high strung, was everyone in SwiftClan like that? He didn't know what characteristics he expected, but chill was definitely one of them, but whatever, they were new and probably just anxious to get some grub, no problem. Or at least it had never been a problem when he was in DayClan or WaterClan. If the clan was out of food he would scavenge for some or ask his neighboring clan friends for some extra meat.
Wildrain made her way toward the river, her tail in the air. When they finally reached the river, she halted at the edge and peered into the flowing currents but she couldnt see any fish. "Maybe we need to travel down further. We might have to follow the river into the rogue lands in order to find any fish."
He didn't say anything when she fell, merely arched a brow and let it pass. He walked at the back of the group, just a few steps behind and to the side so he could keep them both in his sight; Chim rarely let cats walk on his blind side, especially ones he didn't know well or trust. Chim trusted very few cats.
He stood by the water beside Wildrain, eying it critically. She was right. Prey was running too low, and they wouldn't be able to survive long if they didn't start looking further, but he wasn't sure they had the cats to hunt such a range. "If we walk that far we have to carry the prey back after. That'll take a long time."
"What if we built something to carry all the prey back at once?" She suggested, going through it in her mind. She had built things before in her past and was sure she could figure out something to build to help carry the fish back.
Chim was skeptical. "That'll take too long. We don't have all day." His brother had been obsessed with his inventions, his sister with her experiments, and neither of them had ever provided much help to the clan. He preferred to keep his paws on solid ground and just do the hard work instead of looking for shortcuts.
"Work smarter, not harder" Wildrain commented with a frustrated flick of the tip of her tail. "Time is never wasted if we are doing something productive. If we can build something to carry the prey in, we might be able to bring back enough fish for the whole clan! We dont know what's down stream! There could be schools of fish and we can bring back a feast!"
“Uhh…” Zephyrglade glanced between the leader and Wildrain. He didn’t have enough background information on the clan to know which way was better. If the amount of prey constantly sucked there was probably no point in getting their hopes up and making something. On the other hand if there was enough evidence to suggest there could be plenty of prey where they were headed there may as well be overly prepared.
“If you want to do something that has yet to be done before you have to do what no ones done before. If you keep going to the same places for prey and keep coming back empty you can expect it. But if cats really haven’t gone down river it’s better than continually hunting somewhere that’s let you down right? Just saying from an outsiders perspective,” Zephyrglade shrugged.
The muscles in his neck stood out as he flexed his jaw, annoyed by their dissent and choking back a bitter retort. He'd been outvoted, and he was trying his hardest not to take offense. Chim had seen those leaders before, and he didn't want to be one; if he was going to do this, he had to do it right, and actually listen when his cats offered an opinion. "Fine," he replied stiffly, bowing his head, "let's head downriver. Maybe you're right."
"Right." Wildrain responded, heading down river. It was a long walk but they had finally reached a small pond. "I've been all over this territory and never noticed this before. She peered into the pond and saw shiny scales just below the surface. Look! Theres fish! But...this is a very long way from Swiftclan's camp..." This was what Chim was afraid of. It was way too far to come here for prey. "Chimerastar, I believe I owe you am apology. You were right about the distance..." She looked back from where they came from, the Swiftclan border not even in sight.
"And I couldn't give less of a damn," Zephyrglade said as he plunged into the water then underneath it's surface. He wasn't fishing for fish he was hunting them like something a wild animal would. He came out with a fish in his jaws, climbing to the surface he made sure the fish lied still, it was about the size of a squirrel, which was why he felt he wasn't done and dove under the surface for a second. Given how small the pond was it was easy to hunt what he wanted. Appearing back up onto the surface he choked up some water, letting go of the fish, but managed to just barely grab it once more and slam it up onto the grass.
"Alright, I'm good, I'm gonna carry these back," He said as he dug up patches of grass before rolling around in the dry dirt to help get the water off of himself.
"My turn!" The queen yowled in delight as she dove into the ice water. It felt like knives but hunger drove her to hunt. She was very fond of fish and was an excellent fisher. Before anyone could say mouse, she had two more fish upon the shore. "And I'll carry these." She mewed as she climbed out of the water. She shook the water droplets from her fur, spraying Zephryglade with more water. When she saw she had sprayed him, she covered up her sheepish smile with her paw.
