His mother hadn't said a word to him. It was all about her precious favorite, Polarblast. Tundrapaw's tail slowly drooped at the ceremonies wrapped up. He was an apprentice, at last. And yet his mother acted as though he were still a pest she hated having to tolerate. Only when his father came around did Stormsurge act with love.
His thoughts swirled down into a darker place and he padded dejectedly toward his new den, laying down outside it and placing his head on his paws with a soft little sigh. He wasn't going to cry, Stormsurge wasn't going to get to make him cry again.
"New apprentices are s'posed to be happy when they're finally promoted," came a voice from the mouth of the den. Cloudpaw stood in the entrance for a few seconds, squinting at the lonely figure in the den. That's Tundrakit - Tundrapaw, right? The one with the piece of work for the mother? He knew the other tom vaguely from the time they'd spent in the nursery together, but like most of his denmates, he'd never really bonded. Though he'd always felt a little sorry for the guy, if he was being honest.
"What's got into you, huh?" he asked, taking a seat beside Tundrapaw and peering down at him. "S'posed to be a day for celebrating, not shut away in here."
life is a lot, and I'm sorry for how much it impacts me here

Tundrapaw raised his head and looked at Cloudpaw, a newly named apprentice just like him. They knew each other as one knows most of their clanmates, bonded by loyalty but little else. Therefore, Tundrapaw was surprised by the interaction.
With another heavy sigh the young tom shrugged, "just didn't feel like celebrating, I guess. It's just an apprentice ceremony, nothin' special." It should be special, he knew. But nothing was special for him. Now that his brother was a warrior, there was nothing amazing for him to do anymore. Polarblash had beaten him to everything. Unless he died in battle first.
