Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Cimber tilted his head ever so slightly, rousing from his dozing state just enough to question if he'd heard right. Had he just heard his name being called? There wasn't anyone in this group that would want to gain his attention was there? But he was mistaken as he heard his name again and it pulled him completely out of his stupor. A ginger tom he'd come to know pretty well over the last half moon was standing in front of him, obviously the one that had been trying to wake him up. "Yes.." His jaws parted in a yawn for a moment before he finished. "..Chim?"
"Come with me. We're going for a little walk," he told him, a hint of impatience in his tone. It was an unorthodox request, to go out for a walk at this hour with just the two of them, but he had finally made his decision and he wanted to get this over with now. If he wanted to be a real leader he'd need to talk with the stars once more, and before that he needed someone to watch over his clan. The ginger tom backed up and turned toward the cave's open mouth, throwing one last glance over his shoulder to check on Cimber's progress.
It didn't take long for the tom to get to his paws. Only pausing for a moment to stretch the last of the sleep out of his system. "Alright." He mewed. He'd long ago learned to roll with the unorthodox manners of the forests leaders. He trotted after the leader, slowing only once he'd caught up. "Lead the way."
As he slipped out the tunnel Chim paused only briefly to consider which path they should take; then he led them down toward the large pool that gathered at the base of the waterfall. It was quiet in the pine glade edging the pool, and it was there he led them. He didn't know Cimber well, and it made him nervous that he already trusted him this much; he'd misplaced his faith before, too many times, and it seemed he still had not learned.
The leader paced back and forth before him as he chewed on his lip, thinking of the right words to say. He'd never been eloquent, but this was important; moreover, it was insane and no reasonable cat would ever want to join him in this. "Okay," he muttered, flicking a glance up at the warrior, "okay. Cimber, I just wanted to--- you go by Cimber, right?"
"It's less of a mouthful than Crypticember." He affirmed with a nod. His dark amber eyes were watching the are around them closely. He was till working on relaxing in this territory. He'd always been so on edge and it was taking him awhile to realize he was safe here with these cats.
But then.. His attention came back to Chim. Why did he seem so nervous? Was it because he was tense? He sat down, wrapping his tail around his paws and trying to appear as calm a possible while he waited for the tom to continue.
"You told me you were General back in Absu--- Toxicity. So you're used to dealing with cats like this. I don't know much about your old home," he admitted, "but I'm just hoping.... did you ever deal with cats fighting, back then? Arguing over things?"
"All the time. If you think every cat wanted to make the journey to the city on Octavia's whim you're crazy. Even after moons there were still cats that didn't think we should have moved there." His brows pulled together, they likely were right. The city had never been kind to the group and had finally be their undoing. "Why do you ask?"
He licked his lips. Would they be able to handle it if this group fought just as much? There was no use worrying about it now, but the thought nagged at him. "We're bringing in a lot of cats, and quickly," he reasoned slowly. "They're from different backgrounds and- we'll, they're already not getting along, some of them. I don't know what to do," Chim admitted earnestly. "I'm not... good at that sort of thing."
He paced back and forth once more before he finally slammed to a halt in front of Cimber and looked at him straight. "I-I need a deputy, okay? I need help."
Cimber tilted his head, blinking for a moment as he stared directly into the handsome tom's face. "Are you asking me or.." He trailed off unsure for the first time in awhile. He didn't doubt he could do the job but he wanted to be sure this was what the leader was getting at. He was used to dealing with cats and their attitudes, it had been all he'd done for the coalition in those moons right after they moved to to city. This wouldn't be much different in his eyes. "Because if so I'd be happy to take that responsibility."
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm asking you, and- wait, did you just agree?" Chim blinked at him, his pupil dilated and eye wild. He honestly wasn't sure what answer he had expected, but he thought it would at least take some persuasion. What cat volunteered to take on a project like this? It didn't surprise him to know cats wanted to be deputy, but even of a sinking wreck like this was bound to be? Cimber claimed he didn't mind wrecks but that didn't mean he wanted to lead one.
"Yes I agreed." Cimber mewed. He admittedly wouldn't have agreed had to not liked the tom so much. He'd grown tired of leaders that simply forced themselves to be 'exactly what the clan needs' but Chim wasn't like this. He'd simply been himself and the cats had followed, believing in him even when the leader didn't seem to think he was anything special. "I've taken on chaos before and it doesn't scare me. Plus, I think this could be kind of fun." He cracked a smile at the tom that was still staring wide eyed at him.
"You're insane, and you're going to regret this," he told him seriously, "when all this comes apart beneath you. But until then... congratulations on becoming the new deputy. I'll announce it next sundown. Try to last longer than a moon, I don't want to go finding someone else." Chim didn't have the best track record with deputies. Tuskblood had left after he had neglected to involve her in most of his leadership decisions (or speak to her at all) and Cal hadn't been a deputy for long before the floods had destroyed their clan. With his luck, Cimber would be gone by the end of the week.
Cimber simply shrugged, "I don't really have anywhere else to go at this point so you're gonna you're pretty stuck with me." He got to his paws as his demeanor shifted from serious to a more casual mood. "We're already out, would you like to try for some prey." Something was better than nothing at this point.
Hah. He was still thrilled with anxiety from asking Cimber to be his deputy, and yet the other tom was already moved on to thinking about prey. He let out a shaky laugh and nodded, staring at the ground before his paws as he gathered himself. "Yeah. What kind of leader yells at everyone else for forgetting prey, then brings back none of his own?"
Cimber brushed past the tom, making sure his tail trailed along the leaders shoulder as he did so. "Maybe closer to the river will give us some luck. It was a warm day for the middle of winder so maybe some of the prey will have moved that way looking for a drink?" The white and ginger tom hated to admit it but he was interested in the workings of the world. Where prey moved and how the predetors followed. He just hoped the prey would moved back into this territory soon. Even he'd lost some weight in the previous moon so he knew the others wouldn't be faring well.
He rolled his eyes at the touch, deliberately ignoring it as he followed after him. "If we're lucky," he agreed, not sounding very optimistic about it. He had complained about his luck plenty of times before, but Cimber was righT: all prey needed to drink eventually, and the river was one of the only water sources that wouldn't be completely frozen over. "LEad the way."
