"Ya...wanna teach me how to make one of ya crowns?"
Ratstar looked incredulously at the young she-cat standing in front of him by the half-frozen river; being the new leader of a clan an' all, he had decided to join in on the sun-high border patrol for the day, following behind young warriors Seasparkleflash and Lavenderblood, along with the latter's apprentice, the ray of sunshine named Poppypaw. The whole afternoon hike had went by rather uneventfully; the other Mountain clans, whom he had yet to officially meet, were too preoccupied with the last few days of Leafbare to really pay attention to their neighboring clan or its new leader. The small group were nearly back to camp when the apprentice asked to talk with him, and he had yet sent the other two felines back before having this unexpected request thrust upon him. The scraggly leader tilted his head in confusion, an awkward silence falling between them aside from the sound of rushing water. After a moment of staring at Poppypaw's wide-eyed, pleading expression, Ratstar finally sighed and gave in.
"OH, uh, sure I can!" Poppypaw agreed to the flower crown request quickly. She had not really expected it. Ratstar did not seem like the type to delicately weave together flower stems and petals, but, then again, Graythorn didn't have the right attitude to be a medicine cat, either. Talking about flower crowns was not her goal for tonight, though, so she took a deep breath and changed subjects, "But it may have to wait, you see... the reason I asked to talk with you one-on-one like this is because I am due to start a secret mission tomorrow."
A secret mission indeed. She felt a little guilty using Fairystar's death to her advantage here, but she'd be stupid if she didn't, especially with a leader like Ratstar who was still learning much about Clan traditions, "Fairystar had arranged an agreement with DayClan. I will live in their camp for a few moons, as many as six or seven, and gather intel. On the surface, I will be there to study DayClan's flora and fauna, but I will really learn all of their secrets. No one else in SummerClan knows about this, of course, it's top secret. I'm only telling you because someone needs to know where I've gone."
She turned her big bondi blue eyes on Ratstar, pouring as much innocence as she could into the expression, "I feel awful leaving you so soon after you became the leader, of course, but I've just got to do this for SummerClan."
A secret mission? Ratstar would be lying if the she-cat's confession didn't catch him totally by surprise. He had only heard bits and pieces about the late Fairystar, his apparent predecessor, so he really had no context to whether they might be the type to send an apprentice - a nearly grown apprentice, mind you, but an apprentice nevertheless - as a spy to a rival clan. The leader had more than a couple questions running through his mind about this revelation, but seeing Poppypaw's earnest expression as she batted her eyes at him, they were all temporarily silenced. He sighed, turning to her with a small smile.
"Heh. Well, ya gonna need an escort to the border tomorrow mornin' then, yeah? First thing come sunrise I'll take ya up there." It was the least he could do. Though the slender tom didn't really know her well, he was still Summerclan's leader for better or worse; it wouldn't feel right, or leader-like, to just let the poor girl make the trek all by her lonesome. The words left his mouth so casually, it was obvious that the offer was genuine. Then, just as suddenly, his smile shifted into a far more playful smirk. "But you're gonna have to do somethin' for me then, for helpin' ya....how about I tell your mentor to let ya off the hook for today, and you can teach to make those crowns before ya go? Sound fair to you?"
"Oh of course! Thank you, Ratstar!" Poppypaw purred up a storm and rubbed her cheek against his. She wasn't so sure about him at first but his heart was definitely in the right place. He trusted her words so easily that she really did feel bad lying to him, and she never felt bag lying to anyone ever. Oh well, it was for a good cause, and really would strengthen the bond between DayClan and SummerClan if she played her cards right. At the moment she didn't realize now that having him escort her to the border was sure to be disastrous, since she was keeping secrets from both Clans, but she wasn't going to worry about it today, "I feel really bad leaving the Clan for so long but I'm sure I won't be missed too terribly. Garden Keepers don't do much in these winter months but I will miss early spring which is a total bummer. Oh well! I'll probably be able to visit and maybe even attend gatherings."
She pulled herself away from the leader's side and took a few steps ahead of them. The sun was beginning to set but they should be able to wrap up a quick couple of crowns before it totally dipped beneath the horizon,"So, flower crowns. They are kinda hard to make this time of year. You really gotta know where to look. Luckily, I know all the best places. What's your favorite color?"
(I'll post the patrol to DayClan and tag you in it, I really need to get it moving I'm slacking xD)
Ratstar froze for a moment as Poppypaw unexpectedly rubbed her cheek against his, unsure of how to react to the sudden affection. Having lived alone for so long, he really wasn't used to it. But after overcoming the initial hesitation, he purred in soft amusement and tried his best to reciprocate the action, pulling away only when the apprentice began talking again. "Well, I'm sure your family and friends'll miss you," he offered in response to her assertion that she wouldn't really be missed. It didn't sit right with him for some reason. Rogues with nothing to live for like he used to be...those were cats that were never missed by anyone. Not someone as cheerful and peppy as Poppypaw. Though, considering how upbeat she was about leaving, perhaps he was reading too much into it. "And I'll be glad to catch up with ya at the next gathering."
Following behind her as she led the way through the forest, Ratstar tilted his head at her question. "My favorite color? Never really gave it much thought before." His eye glanced up at the sky thoughtfully. "I suppose...if I had to pick...I'd say blue. Like the water, or a bright, sunny sky."
"Oh, it's just Softpaw and me now, and she and I hardly ever talk. If anyone misses me it'll be Graythorn." Poppypaw replied cheerfully, which may have struck Ratstar as a little odd given both of her mothers and one of her sisters had failed the last ac gone missing in the past moon. There had been signs of a scuffle and even a little blood, but no bodies were ever found, so what happened to them was an absolute mystery. Poppypaw had been inconsolable for awhile but came out of it just as happy and friendly as always, "Anyways... blue is a beautiful color! My favorite is pink, of course, there's a lot more pink flowers than blue ones out there. The season makes this a little hard, too, but I think I should be able to find just what you are looking for. Follow me."
The cream-colored she-cat started padding further into the Deep Lands. She didn't care much for these forests; the towering trees blocked out most natural light, making it hard to grow much of anything here. Sure, there were a few flowers that thrived in low light, but they were extremely finicky and she didn't bother with them, "We'll have to cross the river, though, I hope it's icy so we don't have to get wet."
Ratstar blinked in surprise, completely unaware that Poppypaw even had a sister. He really should keep more with who's related to who in Summerclan. The mention of Graythorn came as less of a surprise, though. Despite his prickly demeanor, the Medicine Cat seemed to be very well-liked and respected by his clanmates; he personally understood the appeal, he was much more likely to open up to a cat who gave the brutal, honest truth, rather than just saying what you wanted to hear. When Poppypaw told him her favorite color, he smiled. "Pink suits you," he remarked, almost matter-of-factly as he followed her out of the woods. "I don't mind the river. Lead the way."
(you totally set this up right next to the river lol sorry I took too long to remember that)
"OMG thank you so much," Poppypaw blushed at the compliment. Presently she was wearing a very, very simple flower crown. It was more of a vine then anything at all as she was planning to fill it out on this trip. She had, however, stuck a few brittle pink ladies into the frame. They were one of her favorite flowers but really only grew in the fall. She had a small collection of the dried out flowers for special occasions. They were fragile and could really only be worn once before falling apart, but she wanted to leave a strong impression on her new leader of just how cute and adorable she was, "My dream is to have a garden with every pink flower there is growing in it! I think I'll be able to do it once I'm a full Garden Keeper but right now my mentor keeps me too busy doing, " she sighed dramatically, waving her paw, "chores."
Poppypaw lead Ratstar alongside the river for awhile until they reached the safest part to cross over. There was some ice on the edge but it was mostly free flowing water. Her worst nightmare. Anytime water was involved she tended to fall in, and now their only way across would be the stone bridge, which would be slick and difficult for any cat with excellent balance. But she was going to be tough about it, "Okay so we cross here and head northeast to the wildflower meadows. There aren't a lot of wildflowers right now but there are some viney ones that like to creep up trees. That's what we are looking for."
