Moonlitnocturne was driven by few things. Even with all this going on, he wasn't too hip on romance. Or on most of his family. But he was driven by one thing for sure, spite. The idea of getting the cupid title and marking when he was the worst Sunclan member by a mile was both obscenely hilarious and stupid. At best, he could escape during one of the games. At worst, he'd have a cool marking on his pelt. Not really a win-win. But Moonlit knew he should make some effort to connect with his family.
~~~
Discordantpaw was the first to come to mind. They already knew each other, and he knew he had been a little too harsh lately with teaching her. Moonlit couldn't help but think of others like him; that would have taken advantage of her. He wanted her to be prepared, but he also didn't want to burn her out. So today, they'd relax. Do what she wanted. When she met him by the edge of camp, he gave her a warm smile. "Hey, I was thinking we'd go to the hot springs today. How does that sound?"
"The hot springs sound marvelous!" Discordantpaw was always a hard one to read, but this at least sounded genuine. She didn't take anything seriously ever at all which made her nearly impossible to train. Moonlitnocturne was doing a pretty good job of it, though, and she loved him just as much when she was getting lectured for poor form as she did right now with the promise of adventure on his tongue. Assigning the Janus as her mentor was a no-brainer. Sure, it seemed odd to give a cat on probation an apprentice - it was almost like rewarding bad behavior - but it worked for these two. She greeted her brother as she usually did with a check-to-check head rub, "I haven't been there in so very long."
It was true, Discordantpaw was a pain to train. His strict attitude was the only way he could get her to learn anything. It felt like a constant headache for them both, but if it was for her, she never showed it. Always too happy to spend time with him. Moonlit never minded, and he returned her head rub just like he always did. It was a cooler day, so a chance to warm and swim some in the hot springs sounded divine. "Me neither." Bloodyrondo had been busy with the Romance Festival, and barely asked for Moonlit's help. So he may as well take the time and go relax while he could. "All these flowers are killing my sinuses. And if I run into Jetclaw again, I don't know what I'll do. So we can always go somewhere else after."
"I wonder if Autumngossamer read you and Jetclaw's bones together or something! That would be so romantic. She's a really pretty cat and also very nice, you two would have such darling kits," Discordantpaw purred, giving her brother a wink before trotting ahead of him. Her black tail was vertical, the picture of confidence, and her mouth hung just slightly ajar as she tasted the air for the tell-tale humidity of the hot springs, "But I don't think I'm ready to give up my big brother just yet."
Moonlit's pale fur did little to hide the blush beginning to creep along his face. Wait, did she? Okay, they ran into each other into the tunnels. And they were paired on the blind date. But that didn't mean anything right? I mean, Jetclaw didn't like him. Plus she was Skipstep's brother, and that would make him Littlestar's brother-in-law. He didn't need that. It made his torn ear twitch. Also kits? With the kit killer? He couldn't wish that on anyone. "Gee, get off of it. Last I checked, she was still mad at me for joining the Shadow Era." He rolled his eyes, though he had a hard time hiding the awkwardness in his voice. Those last words hit him, and he realized he didn't want to give her up either. That meant another few moons here at Sunclan. Great. "Fine fine. What about you? You've mostly been helping from what I've seen, but have you done anything for the festival?"
"Everyone was mad at you for joining Shadow Era, they can't all be upset with you forever," Discordantpaw chimed it with a surprising note of maturity. She turned to wink at her brother and saw he was blushing. Her purple eyes widened in surprise and her mouth formed a little "o" shape as she realized maybe there really was something between him and Jetclaw, "You do really like her! How exciting! If you need me to set you two up, just say the word, I have my ways... Although you probably don't need me. Seems like the Sun God wants you two to be together if you met in those tunnels."
She pranced ahead now, knowing that Draculad would appreciate a little distance between them, then changed the subject to answer his last question, "As for me, I've been keeping busy, helping out here and there. I haven't met the one. Not really looking anyways."
"Not to say you don't know, but as someone who's been universally hated here for a while, I don't expect it to level off anytime soon." Moonlit could hope Discordant was right. But his track record was awful and he had no intention of making it any better. His light fur hid nothing and he quickly tried to look away when she saw the blush on his face. Did he like her? Now he wasn't sure. He let out a huff, "I'm fine. We keep meeting up anyway." Besides, he didn't believe in the Sun God. Why would some god want them together anyway. Oh well, didn't matter.
She was right, he did appreciate the distance. Moonlit didn't want to admit he was relieved no one was putting any moves on her. She was still so young, and he'd kill whoever looked at her like that. "Good." He still huffed, "Bloody's not running you ragged, right?"
("and he'd kill whoever looked at her like that" awww)
Discordantpaw let the subject change, she wasn't one to pry, at least not in Moonlitnocturne's case. She didn't care much for personal drama anyways, "Bloodyrondo only wanted my help with his single's mingle thing. He was having a hard time finding anyone to help him mostly cuz anyone adult and older would be part of it. Also I guess it had to be a secret since Littlestar did't approve of it. Can't imagine why."
The air was starting to grow a little humid which was very unusual considering the cold weather. Discordantpaw let out a purr and bounded ahead toward that heavy air, totally abandoning the conversation right in the middle of it. Her bengal bloodlines drove her to love water. The hot springs were a treat she didn't indulge often and, even then, she was usually alone. She glanced back at her half-brother and grinned, "Hurry up!"
(moonlit sees that discordant and honeysplash blind date and he's pissed about it)
"Nah, can't imagine why she wouldn't want anyone to learn the layout of those tunnels and use them to their advantage." Granted, that was Moonlit's plan. And it went worse than he expected. I mean sure, she could be concerned about everyone's lives, but that was too Little for his interpretation of Little. It was too obvious. There had to be something darker. He shook the thought off before running forward to catch up to Discordantpaw. Even running up, his paws already burned. He'd been on them too much as of late, he needed the break. He put a paw up on the rock, pushing past the initial sting of heat before bringing another one up. "Be careful, okay. I don't want you scalding yourself."
( LOL If Dissy ever gets a mate I can only imagine how Moonlit would react )
"Oh come on Moony, you mean to tell me that you never went in those tunnels when you were my age? Not even a little curious about where they lead?" Discordantpaw replied, giving her half-brother a mischievous look, "I thought it was a right of passage to wander them but now that you mention it I guess I never see any other cats down there." It wasn't necessarily against the rules. Discouraged, yes, but no one had ever gotten in trouble for it that she remembered.
She winced at the heat beneath her paws and felt the desire to crawl onto Moonlit's back like she used to do when she was a kit. Unfortunately, she was a little too big for that now, but that didn't stop her from trying. The mostly black calico crouched on the ground and then pounced onto Moonlit's back hoping against common sense that it was a the best solution for her predicament, "Carry me then!"
(they gotta pass the test. though there are no right answers xD)
"I didn't grow up here," Moonlitnocturne replied simply, a third paw now resting against the burning rocks. He couldn't remember where he was born. Just knew that he spent so much time wandering, he joined Sunclan at the tail end of his kithood. Then he spent most of his time training to learn how to fight rather than exploring. Then he left and now his life was back here in this mess. His last back paw had acclimated to the rock and he took a small step forward before Discordantpaw jumped on him. He was already a small warrior, and his ever growing half-sister was definitely too big for him to carry anymore. So he fell almost immediately, face pressed against the rocks. "Nope, nope, no. Walk yourself." Moonlit pulled himself out from under her somehow, shaking his pelt. The days of pulling his pelt back into shape after Discordant messed it up were over and he did not want to go back to them.
"I didn't know that," Discordantpaw said but she didn't know why she was lying. The calico tended to eavesdrop a lot and had some dirt on almost every cat in the Clan, although she herself never contributed to the rumors. No, she just took the information she did have and used to to pick on their subjects in private. She liked watching other cats squirm from time to time. She'd inherited that quality from her father.
Instead of hopping off her brother's back, she leaned forward, putting her cheek against his in a platonic show of affection. She was marking him as hers. She didn't mind if he had Jetclaw so long as Moonlitnocturne knew who was really his boss, "These rocks feel pretty nice, actually, we could just lay here all day and cuddle. Bet it would make your old-man joints feel a whole lot better."
"Really? You didn't?" Moonlitnocturne didn't sound surprised at all, those his eyes widened to play the part. He knew Discordantpaw for long enough to know she had enough dirt to bury the clan. Even if he came back shortly before she was born, he knew everyone pretty much knew his story. How he ended up with the kit killer title.
"Gee, I get it." He murmured as she pressed her cheek against his, unable to resist blowing air out through the side of his mouth at her. Even if he hadn't put all the reasons together yet, he had a good idea. And responded in kind by flicking her nose lightly with his tail. "Sure, sure. And how soon will that idea get old and you're hopping into the springs?"
"Truly, I didn't have a clue." Discordantpaw replied as she drew her head away from her brother's cheek, her one ear twitching and pinned to her skull. She looked him unflinchingly in the eyes. Her purple orbs were absolutely full of mischief and a glimmer of something bright, like sunlight. Her intention was to get Moonlit to try and tell her a story or something as evidence of his upbringing. It was easy to tease that kind of stuff out of other cats, at least for her, but the calico she-cat was always more sloppy when it came to her older brother. Her attempt had failed. Perhaps it was because she knew if she seriously asked him a question he would answer her honestly. She was just making it harder on herself because she didn't like to get information the direct way. That was no fun.
She rolled onto her back and twisted her tail around Moonlit's so her would stop flicking her nose, "Hmm, I don't know, this is pretty nice. But... I've always wanted to play water tag in the springs. No one else would play with me but maybe you will?" Oh, no one would play with her because she cheated. Always trying to break a rule even if it was stupid and pointless. Discordantpaw grinned,"What do you say? Loser has to do the other's apprentice duty's?"
Post by strawberrycupid on Mar 23, 2020 14:44:41 GMT -5
That was a problem. Moonlitnocturne knew most of Discordantpaw's tricks. How she loved to cheat and gossip and try to find any loophole she could. He'd be lying if he said he didn't find it endearing. It reminded him of his own apprenticehood, of trying to do anything to get out of doing what he was supposed to. Some things never changed, though he learned how to deflect certain things. Giving it so straightforward was how he avoided jumping through all these hoops she set up. Discordant would have to try a little harder to stop him from just walking around.
"I thought the goal of today was to relax." Moonlit stretched out onto his side, the rocks releasing the tension in him. "And don't think I don't realize that's only to your benefit." He laughed. Though this was his younger sister, the only one he really liked. "Maybe later." He ended up adding cause of it.
"The definition of relaxation differs from cat to cat, you know," Discordantpaw teased, stretching out much like her older brother and curling into his side. Despite all the energy she had had earlier she let out a big yawn and drew her paws over her own head like a mask. The warm ground below was essentially cat melatonin and all she wanted right now was a nap, "But this is pretty nice too, I guess." She begin to stroke her brother's flank rhythmically although she struggled a bit with this seeing as she wasn't used to grooming long fur, but she was purring anyways, making the best of it "Jetclaw really has her work out for her if she intends to keep you well-groomed. I don't know how you long-haired cats do it."
"Yeah and..." Moonlitnocturne raised a brow as he felt Discordantpaw curl up next to him. It would only be a moment before she started dozing off, and sure enough, her yawn told him he was right. Course, they were as contagious as ever and it only took a few moments for one to boil up in him. Letting out as she talked, his hum was more exaggerated. This time, he didn't pull away from Discordant, even though each stroke proved she had learned little about long hair since she was a kit. At least it wasn't starting to knot up like she used to do. Blue eyes rolled at the mention of Jetclaw again, there was really no escaping her now, huh? "She stares at it enough. Hopefully, she'll think through the work before trying to pull something at that ceremony coming up." He ended his sentence with a pfft, a hair blowing out of his face.
Discordantpaw did not reply and instead continued to try and groom her brother's fur. Failing, she readjusted herself and began giving him a massage, lifting each paw up slowly as if she were beating a drum, but the tempo as growing slower and slower until it stopped altogether. Still purring, but greatly muted, the calico she-cat had her head buried into her brother's flank and was sound asleep with a smile on her face. Looks like they were never going to make it to the hot springs after all.
(We can end it here if you like, I think it's really cute, unless you have ideas to continue ^-^)
