Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The fresh-kill pile was low still. They didn't have many cats, so it wasn't much of a surprise, and few cats contributed anyway; most ate their prey as soon as they caught it. Chim didn't mind, they weren't officially a clan, so there was no warrior code to uphold; he'd been maybe a little too nervous to meet with StarClan, so he put it off as long as possible. For now, they were just a family, and that was enough for him. The amount of prey on the fresh-kill pile was not.
It took a few minutes of staring for the ginger tom to realize what was missing: the kill pile, small thing that it was, only contained land prey. Was that luck? It was true that not all of their cats had grown up around rivers…. "Do you know how to fish?" he wondered aloud, turning to look at the cats in the camp beside him.
Ruin turned his head to look at tom, bright yellow eyes turning from the pile he'd also been inspecting. "I grew up in the city so I didn't even learn to hunt in the wild." The tom's brown swirled pelt was ragged and torn but seemed to be healing. He fought for Absum Lux and had almost lost his life for it. After all the unrest was over, he knew he'd never find a home with the league and so here he stood. "There's so many things to make noise.. I've missed more catches than I've made." He complained, his paw lifting and coming down in frustration.
"Great," he muttered lowly. Not only did he find someone who couldn't fish but he also found the one cat in the forest that couldn't hunt properly. If he knew anything, it was that he made for a terrible mentor; his first apprentice had turned out alright, but everyone after had struggled immensely. "Don't you have to hunt in the city? It's loud there too," he pointed out, louder. Chim didn't spend much time outside of the wild territories but his older brother had become a kittypet and he couldn't imagine the proud cat eating pellets from a bowl. He had to be hunting his own food.
"In the city the sounds smells of the twolegs and monsters drown out you and your scent." Ruin explained calmly.. it was something that he'd been working on. Being calm with another cat questioned him. "I'm not a good forest hunter but I have no problems with water so I'm curious if I could catch fish." He shrugged, looking down at his still healing chest and giving it a few licks. That injury still stung even a half moon later.
Chim ground his back teeth, debating with himself. He wasn't thrilled by the idea of teaching someone how to fish, but if he was going to be a leader again, he'd have to get used to the idea. (And he'd never admit it. but there were worse than days to spend his day than fishing with a new cat). "Fine, then," he relented with a sigh, "you and me, let's go down to the river. I'll give you some tips and we'll see if you have any talent."
Th brown classic just nodded as he rose to his paws. "Thank you, I'll do my best to learn quickly." This all felt so formal, but he wasn't sure how else to talk to their leader, given his last leader had demand so much formality. A lot of the cats here seemed to know Chim one way or another and only a few were complete outsiders like himself and his experience with being an outsider had been good.
He simply nodded and led the way out. Chim wasn't very good at talking to other cats either; he'd spent moons of his life in solitude, and though he'd eventually come around to talking with others, it was still difficult to talk to new cats sometimes. Small talk felt inadequate, but he had no other tools in his arsenal. "So, you said you were from the city? How'd you end up down here with us?" He tried for a mildly friendly tone, to make up for his earlier gruffness, and did not succeed.
"I spent the last 4 seasons with Absum Lux.. and with Absum Lux gone and the league doing gods knows what over there in the city I figured it was time to get out." He shrugged as the walked, obviously there was more to the story than his told given his injured state but this was the information that Ruin offered. The past few moons had been hard for everyone.
"Ah.... right." He'd heard about what happened to Absum Lux, though at the time he'd been too preoccupied with the destruction of his own clan. He'd met the Nemesis shortly after, and it didn't come as a surprise that the League had taken over the remainder of the city and the group. They were all hard cats, even their leader, and Absum Lux had been weakened. "It was.... tragic, what happened to your home."
"It's happens." Ruin mewed with a shrug. It seemed to happen a lot but power dynamics are ever changing, he had learned that. "It was our own fault.. what happen to Waterclan however. I'm very sorry about that." He laid his ears down against his head at the thought of it. He had never been around water so the idea of a wall of it coming down on him.. It set his fur on end.
Chim's half-gaze dropped to the ground ahead of them. When WaterClan perished they did not lose any cats - though he and a former leader had lost a life each, he had neglected to mention that to anyone - it had been incredibly difficult for him to return here and find his homeland swept away and his clan gone. He had wanted to give up right then, but his family had dragged him back to SummerClan where they'd all regrouped, and he had tried to start a new life... tried to be optimistic that he could now live with his sort-of boyfriend... only to find that Doestar had passed away the day before he arrived in the clan. It wasn't the flood itself that had affected him so deeply but everything that came afterward. His clan had given him a second chance and he'd let them all down.
"Yeah," he responded quietly, an old ache tugging at his heart. "Yeah, they didn't deserve that."
"You're honoring them now." He mewed, not happy that he'd upset the leader. He hadn't meant too. Ruin glanced around the area, noticing that they were getting close to the water. He knew he said he'd learn to fish.. but now he wasn't so sure he'd be able to fast enough to please the older tom.
"No, I'm not," he replied too sharply. His gaze snapped up to Ruin. "I'm uprooting their lives by dragging some of them back here, and they're hurting their families by leaving. They came all this way, what are they going to do when all this falls apart?"
Ruin didn't react to the leader sharp tone, once again replying evenly. "I don't think it's going to fail.. but if you don't want it to succeed it won't." It was probably the most forward thing he'd said in awhile. Usually the tom would roll over for anyone in power but what the heck, this group was about new beginnings right?
His ear twitched. "I don't know what I want. I wanted to be left alone," he grumbled, but he knew it wasn't true. He never did well on his own, and he would not let his family go now that he had them again. Chim disliked being responsible for so many cats... yet he hadn't been able to tolerate being a normal warrior again either.
They'd reached the water at this point and Ruin padded towards it to lap up a few mouthfuls. "The best leaders seem to be the ones that never wanted to lead. I have no doubts you and your family will make this work." He'd seen so many leaders come and go in his time and he'd noticed the trend awhile back. Leaders that fought for power often faded much faster than those that were forced to lead. He seemed to be full of sage advice tonight but he was tired of moving around and he needed this clan to work.
Chim snorted. "Yeah, that makes sense," he muttered skeptically. He shook his head and turned his focus to the water. "Whatever. I'll figure it out," he said forcibly, like if he said it hard enough it would come true. "Let's just focus on fishing. Come sit next to me, and keep an eye on the water. Look at the shapes beneath it, do you see the fish?"
The brown classic tabby nodded and took his place next to the larger tom. His gaze took a moment to focus beyond the rippling surface but after a few moments he was able to see the shapes that Chim had referred too. "Yes I can see them." He mewed, with a hint of excitement in his tone.
"Then there's hope for you yet. Crouch down low by the water, move along the bank to get as close as possible without getting in," he instructed, "and get ready to pounce. If the fish is too far to reach from the bank, you can get in the water; then you'll want to keep your whiskers brushing the surface. You won't be able to see the fish as well, but you can feel the vibrations in the water as it moves."
He paced along the bank a few times, identifying which fish he might want. Most were flashing by too fast, but when he spotted one he could catch, he was ready. Chim lowered himself into a crouch and slunk along the bank like he was stalking prey until he was parallel to the fish. Swiftly, he gathered his strength and lunged, splashing down into the water as his head ducked beneath and he caught the fish in his jaws.
Ruin water with wild eyes, which only got wider as the leader leapt into the water and emerged with the silvery creature in his jaws. "Great catch!" He mewed with none of his usual sarcasm, the brown classic tabby padding over to where Chim was and examining it more closely. A quick look over told him they were slippery as all hell and he'd be lucky to catch one on his first go but he'd try. "I'm going to walk a bit down river where they aren't spooked." He mewed, remembering the leaders words and trotted off, excited now to try his paws at fishing.
