Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. He hadn't meant to come up here. He could have gone the whole season without walking this trail… but instead, he found himself at the top of the cliff, overlooking the whole territory. Chim used to come up here to brood, back when he was younger; he would curl up in the indent in the cliff a few tail-lengths below and grumble about the unfairness of it all. Lover's Cliff, they'd called it, but he had never found love back then.
He thought coming up here would upset him, remind him of those times, but instead he just wanted to laugh. Chim had a hard life then, he wouldn't deny that, but he would never had imagined everything waiting for him. He never thought he'd have a clan of cats come together with him. His spirits lighter than they'd been in days, the orange tom skipped down the trail and back into the camp, his head high and single eye unusually bright. "Which of you unfortunate souls want to come for a walk with me?"
Cimber lifted his head from where he lay at the older tom's words. The ginger and white tom spent a good portion of the day to himself, still not used to being around other cats after so long in solitude. "I'm free." He mewed with the smallest bit of hesitance in his voice. "Where were you thinking about going?" He asked, like he knew enough about the territory to understand if the tom answered.
Chim was surprised to hear an unfamiliar voice answer him. He scanned the camp until he spotted the other cat and blinked at him, then nodded once. He didn't know Cimber well yet - a strange feeling, given the tom had come to live with him, in a way - but it was as good of an opportunity as any to change that. "Sure. I'm heading up the cliff, there used to be a couple of nests up there. I don't know if they'll still be around."
Up the cliff. He could understand that easy enough. The large got to his paws and shook out his ragged pelt. It was still stained with the smog and pollution from his time in the city but even in the last few days it was starting to clean up. "Lead the was Chim." He mewed, his head dipping ever so slightly with respect.. maybe a tad bit of nervousness as well.
Once he was standing Chim took a second to give him a swift once over, taking in his new clanmate, before he nodded and turned to take the lead. The roar of the waterfall outside was too loud to talk over as he climbed up the slick track beside it, so it was a quiet walk until they distanced themselves enough from the spray of water, and he relaxed his pace to walk beside Cimber. "How are you, ah... settling in?"
Cimber paused, trying to think of an answer. "It's taking me a bit to get used to the calmness of this place." He admitted, "I'm so used to the roar of the city and having to be ready to run at any moment that it's hard to relax." He quickly trotted the make up the steps he lost between them. "But I think I'm starting to get used to it." He added with a determined nod.
"I'd hardly call it calm," he mewed skeptically, "everywhere you turn there's another cat standing in your way." He had not been on his own for long, but the first few days after he left his clan had been truly peaceful. His family were the only ones with him then, the ever-faithful friend Pygmyprawn and his siblings, and the days had been long and quiet. He had never been to the city to compare it, but if it was more crowded than the clans he'd lived in, he couldn't imagine ever wanting to live there. "Why stay somewhere you can't relax?"
Cimber shrugged at this question. So many cats had asked him why he'd left Absum Lux when he was so respected as a general and chosen to live in the bustling city outside it's borders but he couldn't answer that then, let alone now. So he reverted to humor as was his usual answer to uncomfortable situations."I don't ever relax so I fit right in." He mewed in a chipper tone. "But once the league cats started to make that city their playground and driving out the rest of the rouges I decided it was time to find some new chaos."
"Unfortunately you succeeded," he responded dryly. As much as he wanted a peaceful, relaxing existence, he knew it was unlikely to happen, especially not with this endeavor. The clan was too unstable and there were too many uncertainties. Cimber had found his chaos. Chim paused then, realizing his words could be misunderstood and flashed a sideways look at the warrior. "Unfortunate that we're all a wreck, that is, not... not that you're here. Is what I meant."
Cimber shrugged, "I was general of Toxicity when Octavia decided to find herself and create a new group out of the scraps. Wrecks don't scare me." He paused, wondering if revealing that detail of his past had been a good idea. The cats of the Coalition sometimes got looked down on for being weak. That was the last thing he'd wanted to appear as here. He cast a sideways glance at the leader, afraid of what he would see.
General? Surprise flickered across his expression as the leader looked at him, seeing him for the first time again. He hadn't expected to have any former deputies in his clan, certainly not from such an old group. How had he ended up here? Chim didn't know much about Toxicity; back in those days he'd been collapsing in on himself and locking everyone else out, spending moons on end wrapped in his own self-loathing. He'd only heard brief tales of the group from Celestialwarrior and her family, and it hadn't sounded like a comfortable place to be.
"I hope my clan is less of a wreck than that.... or at least survives," he replied softly.
Cimber shrugged. At least he only looked surprised and not disgusted or fearful. "I think so many cats are here just under the idea that it's something that is new and they want it to work that Swiftclan isn't going to fail outright." He wouldn't say it wouldn't fail at all, simply because he knew better. Everything had some chance to fail. "It's going to take a bit to get everything organized but I'm sure it'll fall into place." He offered the tom grin of encouragement, funny enough, he found himself hoping everything worked out for the rag tag group.
He huffed, shaking his head once. "I can always hope you're right, but I suspect otherwise. Nothing ever falls into place when I'm around; they fall apart instead." There was a trace of his old bitterness in his voice as his mouth twisted into a grim smile. "Maybe this will be the one time in my life things go right. The stars change their mind on a whim, don't they?"
Cimber nodded, "I also think there's such a thing as being owed something good." He wasn't sure if he was making sense so he pushed on and explained. "When a lot of stuff goes bad, your life is out of balance and for that balance to be corrected good things have to happen." He didn't push into what had all gone bad for the tom but he figured there was enough that it was time for the stars to start to pay up. "Like how you met me. Good things are starting." He attempted to lighten the mood. He really wasn't one to have serious conversations like this for extended periods.
He snorted, giving Cimber a skeptical look. "Don't get ahead of yourself, pretty boy. I've seen your type before." He knew better than to mention the last time he'd met a pretty face Cal had ended up his deputy. Chim suspected that would not help his point any. Still, the confidence was refreshing, and it did the job: they were effectively able to move on from the heavy topics. They were nearly at the top of the cliff by now, and he started to look around more carefully.
"Used to be the birds would nest up here. It's the wrong season for that, but maybe there will be a few left."
"Oh so I'm a pretty boy." Cimber thought with a grin. Maybe he wasn't as impenetrable as he seemed? But he refocused at the leader's question. "Maybe?" IT was late season but some of the young might still be hanging around the area, not ready to move on yet.. There was symbolism in that somewhere.
He rolled his eyes at the hopeful answer. "There's usually some in the rocks in the side of the cliffs and maybe one or two up there." He nodded to the tree at the top of the cliff, worn and barren now without its leaves. It didn't look promising, so he headed for the edge of the cliff to search around it.
Cimber's amber gaze followed the other tom's until he noticed where the nests would usually sit. His hopeful maybe did seem laughable at this point, seeming the obviously abandoned nests on each little perch. Just as he was looking away movement caught his eye. "There's something.." He trailed off, trying to get a better look at what animal was darting along the cliff face.
"Mm?" he answered absently, pausing in his step to look back at Cimber. His brow furrowed slightly as he glanced after him, searching for the flicker of movement that had caught his attention.
Cimber stretched up onto his hind paws, his front bracing on the stone face in front of him to get a better look. He'd seen the blur rush into a small crack which he now pressed his face into attempting to identify the creature. "What are you..?" He trailed off, scenting the air again.
