Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
This had been coming for quite a long while now. And it was about time Foxbane actually addressed it, did something about it, instead of just letting Condorstrike sit here and wonder what to do. She had invited her mate out to the lake. It wasn't as popular as some places on the territory, and she expected they'd get more privacy there. So, now she sat on the old, decrepit little pier over the frozen waters, waiting. She wasn't sure he'd show up, but she had told him it was serious, so she hoped he would, even if he only had the idea to try and break things off before she could say anything.
Of course, that was why she'd wanted him here in the first place. Throughout her insanity, through nearly starving herself in the aftermath of the apocalypse her and Glowstar had started, and two litters that were very, very obviously not Condorstrike's, she'd practically ignored him. To be quite honest, she was surprised things weren't official long before now. There was nothing between them, and on her end, there never had been. She didn't doubt he'd hate her after this, but better to know the full truth now, hate her, and be able to get on with his life than continue to live a miserable lie.
When his mate told him it was serious, he came. He always did what he was told. Lately, he'd begun to wonder why. He'd been so wrapped up in her, unable to believe that a cat like her could ever be interested in someone like him, that he hadn't stopped to realize maybe he couldn't believe it because it wasn't true. They'd had their problems, who didn't, but eventually, even he had to admit things weren't perfect and never had been. Condorstrike wasn't quite ready to admit to himself it had all been a mistake, that there had never been anything between them... because there had to be, right? Why would she ever be his mate if she didn't love him, for a time? No, he blamed himself for not being there, and he blamed her corrosive friends and the pressure of her position for tearing them apart.
Condorstrike slipped across the bridge to join his mate, and sat beside her, deciding after a moment of hesitation it was best to sit apart. He didn't want to push her too far yet; maybe he knew. "You know, normally a couple talks about big decisions like stepping down before they happen," he quipped, his voice weak. Jokes had never been his strong suit, he wasn't clever or funny enough.
"That implies we were ever much of a functional couple." Foxbane replied, her tone far more clipped than she intended it to be, and she had to stop, shaking her head, and start again. "Sorry, yeah, you're right. In a normal couple, that would generally be the right thing, I guess? Not that I've ever been in a normal relationship in my life." The last part was murmured under her breath, and she wiped a paw down her face again. Focus. You're here to give the guy a second chance at happiness, not make him be more miserable.
Giving a sigh to steady herself, she turned to look him in the eye. "Okay, I'm going to be really blunt. This isn't going to work, and we're done. Everything between us has been built on a lie, and that's not fair to you while I go out and cheat with other toms, and fall for my best friend."
Condorstrike huffed. Her words stung. He was still getting used to this new Foxstar who wasn't just saying this to hurt him. "If you think I didn't notice you cheating, I did," he told her, and it was half true, "but I didn't give up on you then. Why would I give up on you now?" He didn't know why he was arguing, but he felt anger rising in his chest regardless. He had spent all this time with her, wasted so much of his life and watched his family break apart, and it couldn't all be for nothing. He had put too much into their relationship to give up now. "So you've been a bad mate. Try harder."
"I don't think you're getting the point, Condorstrike. Of course you knew about the cheating, I was pretty blatant with it. I'm asking you to give up now because this is all a lie. We're a lie. It's not just a simple matter of I don't deserve you, or I've forced you apart from your family, which is true enough already. I set you up to be my mate. I specifically sent that tom after you and told him to get you caught in the fox trap, just so I could save you and earn your trust. I killed him so he couldn't rat me out." She paused for a moment, staring into his eyes. In return for his answer, she felt another pang of guilt, her expression written with pity before she took a breath to continue. "I did it specifically because I wanted to annoy WaterClan, to take another one of their own for myself. I never cared about you. Not once. I never loved you. I still don't love you. I'm in love with Glowstar. It's about time we give up on this. Because you don't deserve to be hurt by me over and over and over again as you continue your life here. You've wasted enough time for a mate that never gave you anything back but pain and suffering, and it's time you went and left so you can be happy. Because I promise that you'll never be happy here."
The fox trap. It had been many moons since he'd thought about the day he'd nearly died. It was a distant memory now, strangely detached from reality; he knew he had been terrified and panicked and the trauma should have scarred him, but it more like a passing thought instead, like he'd watched it happen to someone else. There were still scars beneath his fur but they were nearly forgotten now. How could she claim to have pushed him there? No cat could have coordinated that, it was impossible; she couldn't have known he'd get stuck there. It was too big of a gamble to think he wouldn't notice the trap before he was stuck in it.
Only he hadn't noticed, and he had gotten stuck.
"You did love me once," he insisted, raising his gaze and staring at her hard. "You already had WaterClan cats, you didn't need me. You chose me to live with you. Don't you remember how happy we were at first? When we had our first litter?" His voice started to crack a little. "That was when it all fell apart. When we lost Inferiorchoice. That was when we started to grow apart and you stopped thinking you loved me."

"I picked you because I knew your line was weak enough to fall for it. What better cat to take than Sparrowmark's son?" Foxbane sighed, not even hesitating with the insult. "I don't care what you think we had, it all means nothing. I don't care about you, and that's all there is to it. We're done, and nothing you say will change that. Inferiorchoice was just something I couldn't predict because Daylight snapped. Inferiorchoice is dead to me. Think about this, Condorstrike. How many times have I manipulated toms into doing what I wanted? I manipulated Deal into our mateship way back when, what's to say I didn't do the same to you, even on the best of days. And what even if I am lying? Then I'm doing this just to hurt you, and isn't that just as bad, trying to keep you in a relationship by demeaning exactly what happened?" The Senator spoke too calmly, with too much logic to it all. The sincerity was unlike her, yes, but even Condorstrike, looking into her eyes, wouldn't be able to find a flicker of a lie in there. Then again, when had he ever been able to tell what she was thinking? When had he ever been the one she came to with the things in her life? Never. Even as a mate, even before Inferiorchoice, she'd treated him largely like he didn't matter, like a trophy husband used for appearances with little behind it.
He reeled back, stung by her forwardness. His father had always been a sore spot for him, she knew that, and it was a low blow to bring it up. There was a flash in his eyes for one naive moment as he thought maybe she was finally acting like herself again. Low blows and insults, those were her style, not this blunt honesty. His claws dug into the ground and he shook his head adamantly. It hurt to know she didn't care about their daughter anymore, but it didn't surprise him, he'd accepted that too long ago. It was her way of coping with what had happened. If she had to forget their loss to move on, fine, he could live with that. He was doing it too, as much as he hated himself for it. He had worked so hard to get her back, and then Inferiorchoice had rejected him, and he had to let her go. He gave up too easily.
"This is my life, Foxstar," he reminded her when the silence was too painful to bear. "You're all I have left."
