Her first apprentice! Pantherclaw couldn't believe it but it's true. Last night at the ceremonies she was given someone to train. She was so thrilled then but this morning reality set in. It didn't seem that long ago she was an apprentice. Oh the trouble she had gotten into then! Hopefully her apprentice wouldn't learn things the hard way like she did. Glancing over to the lightening eastern horizon, she waited for Speckledpaw to arrive. The cold air was calm this morning and there seemed to be no clouds in the sky. Maybe the sun will give them some warmth today, so she hoped.
Specklepaw bounded up to Pantherclaw, his thick multi-colored tail bushy and high in the air. He greeted his mentor with a warm smile, his deep green eyes sparkling with excitement. "Good morning, Pantherclaw! What are we going to do today?" He asked enthusiastically.

Since Pantherclaw is always looking for fun and adventure, she tried to think what she might like to do if this was her first day as an apprentice. When she was a kit, she wanted to know what the rest of the world looked like, so she replied, "Good morning to you! I'm going to show you a lot of our territory today. And since it's Leafbare, it's always a good idea whenever a cat is out of camp to bring back some prey. I wish I can show you how to hunt mice first but they're hard to find on days like these so we'll start with stalking birds and squirrels. How does that sound?"
Wow! First day and we actually get to do stuff? The apprentice thought enthusiastically. "Definitely!" He responded to Pantherclaw, giving a small bounce of excitement. "I hope I catch something on my first day! The clan will definitely need it!"

The black she cat was very pleased over Speckledpaw's enthusiasm. "I hope you do too," she meowed. "Let's get started." As she led the way out of the camp, she continued to talk. "I'll show you the training hollow but we won't stay there today. It's on the way to the waterfalls. That's one of my favorite places to go. And from there we'll go south to the southern mountain. There's lots oak trees there where squirrels like to live."
The calico tom nodded eagerly. "Okay! That sounds fun!" The waterfall! Now that is something I would like to see! As they exited camp, Speckledpaw's eyes widened. "Whoa! I didn't realize the world was so big! How far does it go?"

"I don't know but there's lots more land outside our territory," Pantherclaw responded. "In fact I've heard of a place where the land ends and there's nothing but water. It's called the sundrown place because the sun sinks into it every evening. Now that's something I'd like to see someday." She turned a corner in the path and a small clearing stretched out before them. "Well, here's the training hollow. This is where I will teach you the art of battling but for now we'll go onto the waterfalls."
The sun drowns every night!? he thought, his expression flabbergasted that such a place could exist. When they rounded the corner and his eyes met with the training hollow, they grew wide. "Wow! Its huge! So much space to practice!" He began to imagine moons upon moons of apprentices that trained in this very spot. Some were legends and leaders! He knew they didn't have very much time but he had to get a feel for it. He walked into the clearing, his eyes taking in everything. His paws carried him to the center where he dug them into the earth. So many warriors learned all that they knew from this spot. Leaders became who they are right here. His mind drifted to what kind of warrior he was going to be. Was he going to be a fierce battle warrior? Or was he going to be the best hunter and bring back mounds of prey? Or perhaps one day he would be leader! And it would all start with this very moment. Pride swelled in his heart as he stood tall in the center of the hollow.

Pantherclaw watched her apprentice with an amused look on her face. "You ready to go?" she asked after waiting for a bit. "Believe me, you'll see so much of this place that by the time you become a warrior you'll be sick of it." She was speaking from her own experience. She had spent what seemed to her countless days here. She had said she never wanted to see this place again but here she was back again. But this time she knew it would be different for her. It'll be a whole new experience to be the teacher instead of the student. Suddenly a feeling of doubt flashed by. Would she be good enough?
When Pantherclaw's voice snapped him from his thoughts, he suddenly realized how long he had been standing there. He gave her a sheepish smile and bounded back to her. "Oh, right! Sorry!" He gave one last look at the hollow. Was that true? Would he really be so tired of that place by the time he was an apprentice?

Shaking off her sudden bit of moodiness, Pantherclaw started off for the waterfalls at a brisk trot. She knew they'd have to move fast to see all she wanted to show him of the territory today. "Oh while I'm thinking of it," she meowed over to Speckledpaw, "when we get to the falls and the small lake it formed, don't fall in. A dunking in the water in this cold season could make you very sick. When the warmer weather comes, I'll teach you how to swim and the little lake at the falls is a good place to learn because it's not so terribly deep."
Speckledpaw was the average size of a newly made apprentice but compared to a warrior, he was still fairly small and had to go a bit faster than a trot to keep up with Pantherclaw. His warning hit his ears and he gave a nod. "I'll remember!" He puffed, beginning to feel winded. He had never traveled this far before. His muscles ached, his lungs burned, and his paws were beginning to sting. Maybe once they arrived at the waterfall, he would be able to drip his paws into the water to relieve them.

Once arriving at the waterfalls, Pantherclaw turned to see Speckledpaw breathing hard. She felt bad for pushing him so hard but then realized the very same thing was done to her early on in her training. That practice helped to build up her strength and endurance. Instead of the apology she almost said, she meowed, "How are you doing? We can rest here for a little bit if you like." A very light mist was settling on the tips of her black fur giving her an almost iridescent look. She padded over to the water's edge and began to drink.
Speckledpaw panted for a moment before catching his breath. "I'm okay. I've just never run this far before." A purr rumbled in his chest as he made his way over to the water's edge with Pantherclaw. "This is so beautiful!" He couldnt believe that Summerclan had such beautiful territory. He leaned down and took a few laps of the cool water. It felt refreshing on his dry tongue. He lifted his head, water dripping from his chin. He swiped his tongue around his lips to catch the water droplets. Then, his gaze caught a movement in the water. He looked out toward deeper water and saw a large carp sucking at the surface. "Is that a fish?" His eyes widened in surprise at how big it was. Summerclan didn't bring back too many fish but when they did, they weren't nearly that big. It looked almost big enough to eat a cat. "Has a fish ever eaten a cat before?" He asked, his fascination turning to fear. He backed away from the edge. Was it going to jump up at him and swallow him whole?

Merriment glimmered in Pantherclaw's eyes as she listened to what Speckledpaw had to say. "I wouldn't worry too much about that," she laughed. "I've never heard of a fish eating a cat. But did you know there's a certain species called catfish?" She sat back from the water, refreshed after drinking it and waited for Specklepaw's response. A smile grew across her face as she recalled what she thought when she first heard that. A picture of a cat's head on a fish's body swimming around the stream came to mind. She was sorely disappointed however when she finally saw a catfish.
"There's a fish called a catfish!?" Bewilderment lit up in his green eyes and his jaw dropped. Now that was something he would have to see for himself! Much like Pantherclaw, he, too, pictured a cat's head on a fish's body. "What does it look like? Does it have a fish body and a cat face? Does it - does it have a fish body with a cat tail?" His voice turned to amazement as he began to imagine what one actually looked like. "O-or maybe it has claws instead of fins!" On the last question, he swiped at the air with his claws.

"I wish!" Pantherclaw laughed. "That would surely be something to see. You have a good imagination. To tell you the truth I was very disappointed when I first saw one. I thought it would look like a fish-cat but as it turned out it was long and had a more rounded body. And it was smooth because it didn't have scales like regular fish. And here's the real reason it's called a catfish - it has whisker-like things on it's face. That's it. A fish face with a few whiskers! Actually for a fish it's quite ugly. The only redeeming value it had was it's color. It was black just like me." She smiled and turned her body.
It was a little disappointing that the only reason it was called a cat fish was because it had whiskers but the strange creature still seemed pretty fascinating. "I still want to see it! Where can I find one?" He lifted his tail in the air as he looked expectantly at his mentor.

"Well, the only one I saw was at the lake," Pantherclaw meowed. "And that's along our northern border. But who knows? Maybe there's some lurking about these streams." She took a few more laps from the large pool at the base of the falls then shook her fur. "The only problem coming here in Leafbare is the dampness. We should keep moving so we won't get too wet. This is the place to be on hot Greenleaf days but not so much now." The black she cat began to follow the stream to the south. "There's a shallow place farther downstream where we can cross to get to the oak grove."
