Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
In front of Nyiradessa, there were three distinct herbs. The first was a dark green fern. The second was a pile of tiny black seeds. The third was a collection of petals. Each were specific herbs to the Garden of Tatlia, a place she was sure she would eventually have to take her new mage.
"One of these herbs will kill you, one will make you unconscious for an indescript amount of time, one will have no critical effect," she meowed as she looked at the frail cat that sat across from her. She was less than thrilled that of all felines, this had been the one that she had been given as mage, but she supposed that was what happened when she chose to leave Corax back wherever Corax stayed. The feline she had been given as an assistant was sickly looking and looked half starved, and if Nyiradessa was still in touch with her intuition, the cat's body was currently being used as an incubator. None of these things made her look promising.
"One of the most entertaining parts of training, I think, is letting cats try to figure out which is which." She blinked twice, remembering this game from when she was little. Of course, Supernova had been far too weak to play it with her. Her mother had taught it to her herself. "You may ask one question about each herb, and after you have asked, you will get to eat one. You may not ask about direct effects, but can inquire about side effects if you think it might help you."
Blue was still recoiling from the promotion. Sure, it had been a couple days, and she had been settling in OK in the mage's den, but she did not feel herself at all. She had not been sleeping well. She hadn't been able to keep down much food at all. Her fur was dull, lusterless, and she had a little bit of a runny nose. She kept telling herself that it was not all that unusual for her, though, so she ignored the aches and tried to focus on the cat in front of her.
Nyiradessa was a relatively new cat, at least to Blue. Rumors said she had been mage at one point and then disappeared for awhile. She couldn't get much more than that; after all, she wasn't in internal affairs. Blue really hoped she wasn't as crazy as all the other cats in Primal Instinct, but she knew that was probably hoping for too much. This little game of hers seemed evidence enough that she had a screw loose. If Blue guessed wrong, she would be dead. She sighed and yielded surprisingly easily, "Okay, I'll play along... My first question is, are the black seeds poppy seeds?"

When Blue said that she would play along, the older she-cat laughed. It was a deep sound, one that started in the pit of her chest. "I do not believe I remember giving you the option of whether or not you would," she meowed with a raised eyebrow. Nyiradessa might not have been as crazy as some of the others in the League, but that did not mean she was pleasant to be around. She had a complex, and what she said was law. Or, at least, that's how it should be. She hadn't quite interacted with Funk quite enough to tell if that was going to hold true now. Back in the days where she roamed these grounds, in both instances, really, whatever she had wanted she acquired, but now she was playing a new game with new chess pieces.
"Additionally, I wouldn't be so easy on you. I see no value in babying you," she replied, her tone almost bored as she studied the she-cat. It would have been her first guess, if she was being honest with herself. It was a logical first question, particularly if you weren't familiar with the herbs that were specific to the old world of Primal Instinct. "These herbs originate from the garden in which I was trained. You will not know them by name, so I do not suggest wasting your remaining two questions asking me such questions."
( dang this was the one thread I missed sorry Ian! lol )
"So you are telling me there is no way I would know what these herbs are called? How did you even get them?" Blue was starting to show a little attitude, although it was controlled, more of general complaint than any slight to Nyira. The Mage paused, gathered her bearings and clarified, "Sorry, those aren't my questions. Let me get a closer look."
This time Blue leaned forward and sniffed each herb closely, hoping that maybe the scent would yield clues, but the truth was that she hadn't the slightest clue on where to start. Poppy seeds and cobwebs. That was all she needed to know up to this point. At least she knew the black seeds were not poppy seeds; it was a start anyone, but a waste of a question. No matter. She would figure out this riddle or die, simple, the same stakes as always.
She gently brushed her paw-pad across the petals. Soft, as to be expected: The didn't seem very unusual to her. She had seen similar plants in twolegnest windows and gardens, so her gut told her the odds that these were deadly were probably slim. She did know one thing that twolegs did want out of their garden, though, perhaps because they were poisonous? It was worth a question, "Would any of these herbs be considered weeds?"

sorry, i'll be better at replyingin a timely manner.
"That is precisely what I am telling you," she meowed with indifference in her gaze. "This isn't a test of if you can spout back information you picked up in whatever dump you came from. This is a test on if you are intelligent enough to stay in my den." Her words were sharp and low; the threat behind them was clear. "I got them from a garden that if you manage to survive today I might consider showing you." She shrugged. It wasn't the garden of Funk- she had no passion for the rooftop sky garden in the way she had passion for her beloved Tatlia. But, only worthy students deserved to go to the place that had once been her home, and this student had yet to prove.
Nyiradessa let out a laugh when Blue said that those weren't her questions. "You will learn quickly that I do not give second chances. You used your questions with your own foolishness, and I will not reward foolishness." Her eyes narrowed as she gazed at Blue. "Unless you can convince me why I should allow you two more questions, despite making the rules of the game perfectly clear, it's time that you pick your poison, dearest Blue." Her tone was sardonic as she spoke to her, although there was a hint of amusement in her forest gaze.
( no worries! I'm just as bad LOL. also I'm loving Nyiradessa she's great xD )
"So we are playing that kind of game.." Blue glared daggers at Nyiradessa, but her voice was controlled and casual, albient a touch sarcastic, "I don't know what Funk told you about me. Knowing him, he probably didn't say anything, so I guess I will fill you in. I consider myself smarter than the usual scum of the League but I don't know anything about herbs and have no desire to be Mage. The only reason I am here at all is because Funk wants it this way. When it comes to him I'm no better than any other cat, I suppose you could say he's what makes me stupid. But fine, I'll bite, I have nothing to lose."
The small blue-black she-cat bend down and picked up one of the flower petals. It didn't have a particularly pungent taste but she still made a face as she chewed and then swallowed it. Only after Blue had consumed the herb did she realize that her heart was racing. This was a gamble based purely on luck and she had bet her life on it. This might just be her end. She said she had nothing to lose, which was true, but it didn't make it any less terrifying. She studied Nyiradessa's reaction, trying to gauge if she had succeeded or failed, not that it mattered, she would find out soon enough.
( Nyiradessa can reveal Blue's pregnancy to her if she wants to. It doesn't have to come up here, up to you )

"Of course we are," she meowed with a smile. "You learn quickly, mmm?" Nyiradessa's voice was venomous, but this wasn't uncommon. She had some issues, that was for sure. "Funk didn't tell me anything about you, darling. Don't be so full of yourself." She sighed, listening to her talk. "If you were really that smart, would you have taken an unknown herb so quickly without considering what would happen to the creatures in your womb?" Her whiskers twitched slightly, before tilting her head. Interesting, that she had went for the petals. Maybe she had some sort of self-preservation after all.
"That was Zionous," she meowed with a tip of her head. "It is used like coffee beans in that injesting it should give an energy burst. The burst will be temporary, and the crash following it might be challenging, but it shouldn't have permanent damage." She moved her paw to the fern. "This is tatlia. You would have immediately passed out upon consumption." Her paw moved to the the seeds. "These would have killed you."
Blue had mostly stopped listening to the herbology lesson after Nyiradessa dropped the pregnancy bombshell. She supposed that it made sense, a part of her had known it all along, but she had been ignoring it with such conviction that she had expected the issue to go away all on its own. Nope. She wasn't special... or any different from any other she-cat that Funk had wooed. The thought made her feel sick, and then she felt actually sick, as the flower petals twisted around in her stomach, promising to invigorate more than just herself.
"Excuse me." Blue said abruptly, stepping away from the training, sure to interrupt whatever the Shaman was saying. She didn't care. How could she just continue training her like after such life-changing news? Primal Instinct cats truly were cruel. She decided it best to just leave the situation altogether to collect herself.
( if Nyiradessa wouldn't stop her or anything no worries I'll bring her right back! )

"I do not believe I said you could go," the Shaman meowed. If her words had been sharp before, now they were shards that could cut straight to the bone. "You leave when I dismiss you, or there will be consequences. You do not want to face the consequences, particularly if you desire a live birth." There was no sympathy in her eyes. There hadn't been any sympathy for her when she found out she was pregnant with Corax, and she wouldn't return the favor for anyone, particularly not her mage that she was still unsure had any competency at all. She stood and closed the distance between them. Then, in a flash, she hit the other she-cat as hard as she could, right in the back of her head. She didn't draw blood, but that was simply because she didn't want to waste herbs on her. Instead, the blow was simply meant to stun, hard enough that it might make Blue dizzy.
Nyiradessa then leaned close to the she-cat's ear, speaking lowly. "It is best for both of us if you learn this now, Blue. My word is law. You do as I say, when I say it. You do not leave until you are dismissed. I am in control of this, and I do not appreciate it when meaningless peasants step out of line. If you want to keep your life and whatever dignity you have left, you will turn around and we will continue our lesson."
She then pulled away from her and padded back to where she had been sitting. Her tail wrapped around her paws as she waited. If Blue continued to walk out of the den, it was over. Nyiradessa would tell Funk that she would not train the Mage, would tell him that she was uninterested in having his play thing as the cat she was to train. That would do one of two things. If Funk had any sense, it would terminate Blue's position. Otherwise, the Shaman herself would leave. The job brought her fulfillment, but not enough to be disobeyed.
"Now, where were we," she meowed as she glanced at the herbs. Hopefully Blue was smart enough not to test her luck.
Blue lost her footing and crumpled to the ground when Nyiradessa struck her. She let out a little bit of a gasp but did not call out. Instead, she drew her paw to the back of her head, rubbing it gently, making sure she hadn't been cut, too. The black she-cat didn't feel any blood so at least she had the going for her. Blue was a logical cat and also had a rather high pain tolerance so, after a couple of moments, she got back to her paws and turned to face her mentor. Her vision was a little fuzzy but otherwise she was OK.
Blue should have known better than to assume that Nyiradessa wasn't the violent type. Her first test had been life-or-death after all, not to mention that she had history being raised in the League. It was stupid to ever show her her back. Blue made a mental note not to make that mistake again. She was a little thankful for the blow, though, since it brought her back to reality and got her mind off her recent life-changing revelation.
"Maybe you are mistaken..." Blue replied with just a little fire. It was subdued, but still present, "I don't take orders from any cat other than Funk, and I don't remember him telling me that I was at your beck and call. You are my mentor, sure, but not my master. I guess I'll humor you and stick around if that's really what you want."
The black she-cat usually didn't like to start fights, but damn it she was emotionally raw right now and ready to lash out. This was ridiculous. She knew she was smart but she had no background in herbs and no desire to learn them. What a joke this situation was. Blue shocked herself when she felt a tear run down her face and quickly wiped it away.
