Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The afternoon was surprisingly warm for leafbare, with the sun slanting through the bare trees and onto the forest floor. Beedust had excused herself from her usual duties, escaping to the quiet solitude of the forest to process the world-changing information she had been given.
Pregnant.
Her mind spun, trying to process the information. She wasn't unaware of where kits came from. It shouldn't be a surprise, with how many of her spare moments were spent with him, walking in the privacy of the woods. But they were still a secret, not out in the open. The news from Fawnheart had been without judgment or guess as to who the father was, but the life growing inside her was confirmed. She was carrying his kits.
She couldn't tell him. Not yet, not with the enormous task that he had to undertake tomorrow. With the threat of the flood, he had been busier than usual- they all had. This news would have to wait until his return. Maybe it was time for them to be publicly mates, with all the expectations and social scrutiny that would come with it.
Beedust thumped her head against a tree, groaning. It wasn't bad news. Despite her youth and her normal levels of anxiety about being a mother, she did want kits. This was just... sooner than expected, and overshadowed by the threats that loomed on the horizon.
"Ouch. Are you alright Beedust?" Came a familiar voice, only it was muffled. Fawnheart stood a few foxlengths away, her jaws full of herbs but her eyes held sympathy. She had seen the expecting queen bump into the tree. The beautiful cream somali she-cat padded over to make sure Beedust hadn't cut her head.
“Yes,” Beedust answered, a little embarrassed that she had been caught. “I was just... ah, processing the information you gave me.” Her head throbbed, but there was no wound from her tiny tantrum. The small ginger tabby sat, offering the medicine cat a faint smile. “Are you restocking on herbs?”
Fawnheart set her herbs down so that she could talk to Beedust properly. "Yes, I am." She gave a quick glance at the queen's head just to be sure it was okay. From what she could tell, it didn't look like she had scraped it. "What are you doing out here bumping your head on trees?" There was a playful tone in the medicine cat's voice. Fawnheart had seen this many times over including with herself. She could tell Beedust was shocked by the big news. Fawnheart had reacted the same when she had found out that she was pregnant but now her kits were apprentices and it seemed like moons ago. She could remember a time she had to tell an apprentice that she was pregnant and it wasn't always easy. Especially when it was an unexpected pregnancy.
“It was more of an instinctual reaction than anything,” Beedust responded. “I’m just worried... the father doesn’t know yet and he’s going to help with the flood prophecy thing soon.” All of this was still so beyond her understanding, with prophecies and doomsday floods. It was scary to think she might lose him and have to raise their children alone. “It’s all a lot to handle.”
Fawnheart gave a sympathetic smile. "Are you planning on telling him soon?" She asked, casually. "It might make you feel better. Get it all off your chest." The medicine cat took a seat, wrapping her feathery tail neatly around her paws.
"I think I'll tell him when he gets back. I don't want him to worry any more than he needs to. Besides, I'll be here in camp preparing for the potential evacuation, so I'll be safe." Beedust still couldn't bring herself to say we'll be safe, unable to process the fact that it wasn't just her anymore. "But thank you for the advice. You have kits of your own, right?" If she remembered correctly, Fawnheart's kits were older, perhaps apprentice or warrior aged. She was still relatively new to the clan, trying to place cats and their relations to each other.
Fawnheart nodded. Having Beedust stay in camp was a good idea. The medicine cat smiled and a purr rumbled in her throat at the mention of her kits. "Yes, I do. I have Stellarpaw, Autumnpaw, and Firepaw here with me and then I have Lilacpaw, Fleetpaw, Soaringpaw, Rainbowpaw, Flutterpaw, and Applepaw in Fallclan." Most of her kits wanted to stay where they were born but she was grateful to have a few of her kits with her. "I had nine kittens at once and let me tell you, it wasn't easy" her whiskers twitched in amusement. "But it was definitely worth it."
"Nine kits!" Beedust echoed after her mouth popped open in surprise. "That sounds chaotic." Secretly, she hoped she had less than that. Four or five would be nice, but she knew she'd love however many she had. "Isn't it hard to be here when so many of your children are somewhere else?" Beedust wondered if her comment came off as insensitive- she had a tendency to speak without thinking, saying whatever opinion was swirling around in her head. But she did want to know how the medicine cat felt, separated from the majority of her litter.
Fawnheart nodded, sadness in her eyes though her expression still held a smile. "Of course it's hard but I know they are okay. Their father stayed with them. I tried to get him to come with me but that would mean our kits would be left without their parents. He was always loyal to Fallclan and I didn't expect him to come with me but I wasn't too upset. I know our hearts led to different places but at least our kits have one of their parents to be there for them..." She trailed off, thinking back on how perfect her life had been in Fallclan. "I would have stayed in Fallclan but the leader at the time we were there wasn't too friendly with me and Softpelt since we were both from Springclan and living in Fallclan. He didn't want us there anymore so we came back home. My heart always belonged to Springclan but my life was good in Fallclan. Sometimes I think about going back but I don't even know if I would be accepted and I'm not even sure if their father still loves me." She had loved the tom and she could still remember the hurt in his eyes when she had to leave. They had let one cat separate their family. "Take it from me. What you have is such a gift. It's always intimidating to know you are expecting kits but you will never know how much you truly love them until you can't see them anymore."
"I'm sorry. That sounds difficult," Beedust said, touching her tailtip to Fawnheart's shoulder. "Thankfully it's highly unlikely that Thistlestar will kick me out." The she-cat laughed dryly, flicking an ear back. "For multiple reasons." The first and foremost being that she doubted he would want to be separated from his kits. But she also knew that he loved her, which was a comfort. This wasn't a fling, and their kits would have two doting parents. A flash of gratitude took over her, and she gave Fawnheart a smile. "I'm sure you're glad to have some of your children with you. I hope you see your other ones often."
"I haven't seen them since we left, unfortunately. But hopefully now that they are six moons, I will see them at gatherings" she hoped, wiping a tear from her eye, grateful for the queen's comfort. "Now, enough about me." She chuckled, sniffling as more tears threatened to come. "Have you thought about any names, yet?"
"Oh, not yet. I was planning on asking Thi-the father if he had any ideas. I'm still not very good at clan cat names. They're so complicated," Beedust gave a small chuckle, remembering the days she had just been Bee. "But if you have any suggestions or tips, I'd be glad to hear them." She wished she knew her parents, so she could dedicate one or two names to them, but she had never known them.
"Well, personally, I think flowers make beautiful names for little girls" Fawnheart purred. "Or even an herb!" The medicine cat laid out a few of the herbs she had been collecting. "This is sage, Alder bark, belladonna, borage, marigold, and lavender" she pointed to each one as she named them. "Usually these herbs are wilted at this time of year but I'm lucky to have the two-leg den that has a separate little den for herbs!"
“I do like Lavender. It’s really pretty,” Beedust looked over the herbs, trying to commit their names to memory. “As a flower and a name. What do each of these do?” Before coming to Springclan, she just powered through injuries, lacking access to a proper medicine cat or healer of any kind. This was a whole new world to her, and was one that interested her greatly.
Fawnheart was surprised that the queen was taking interest in her herbs. Not many cats thought herbs were interesting. They were sometimes smelly and bitter and a lot of cats withdrew from them. It made her smile that someone was actually interested.
"The alder bark has a few healing benefits. It treats toothaches, swelling, pain, and prevents complications. And if you chew it up and apply it to a wound, it helps keep infection away." She revealed a grayish and brown bark that had a mosaic-like pattern of white and gray blotches. "Sage is good for cleaning a wound and help increase fertility" She explained, now showing the queen a woody stem with grayish leaves that had a unique bumpy texture and purple flowers branching off of it. "This is belladonna" next, she pushed forward a leafy branch with dark, almost black, berries dangling off of it. "The leaves and roots are used for spasms and cramps but, not many cats know that if you eat the berries, it will make your pupils become enlarged. Softpelt and I are talking about experimenting with the berries now to see if it will help cats see better in the dark." Next, she revealed dark leaves with a small amount of fuzz on them and there seemed to have been quite a supply that she had found. "This is borage. It is used to reduce fevers and increase nursing queens milk supply." Then, she pushed forward a couple stems of beautiful golden flowers. "This is marigold. The petals and leaves are used to stop and soothe infected wounds as well as healing open wounds and sores by chewing them up into a poultice and being applied directly to the wound. If digested, it can help relieve chills."
Finally, she pointed to a few stems that had beautiful purple flowers branching out from them. "And finally, this is lavender. It treats chills and is good for head and throat pains. The fresh scent of these can calm a cat that is feeling nervous or in distress. Here, take a good whiff" she held up the purple flowers for Beedust to sniff. Fawnheart thought maybe a good smell might help the nervous queen. "It also helps bring down fevers and the stem can help a cat in shock."
"And these actually work?" Beedust asked, after looking over, smelling, and prodding each individual herb. Their uses seemed so myriad, and so intriguing to her unexposed mind. "Not that I don't believe you. It just seems so strange to me. Almost unbelievable that I never knew these remedies existed. I used to just tough out my injuries." Not that she had ever had a very serious injury. But it would have been nice to know these things were available, at the time.
The lavender did help to soothe her a bit, though the conversation had already mostly done that. She was still nervous, but now a hint of excitement over her future family crept in, and her outlook had shifted from panicked to positive.
(Btw, I added Speckledpaw back so if you wanted to do a role play with Speckledpaw and Seapaw, we could do that!)
Fawnheart nodded, "They do work! These herbal remedies have been used for countless moons. Way before you and I were even born." She gave the lavender a good sniff herself, letting out a satisfied sigh. "Would you like to help me carry these back to camp?"
(sure! I'll start it now c:) "Sure." Beedust stood, shaking her fur out before stooping to pick up some of the herbs in her mouth. She held them gingerly, not wanting to damage the remedies, then nodded towards Fawnheart to lead the way back to camp. She found a new appreciation for the she-cat, and her steady but gentle presence in Beedust's moment of panic.
Fawnheart picked up the remaining herbs and began carrying them back to camp. The medicine cat began to feel a connection toward Beedust. Fawnheart didn't have very many friends. She felt her only true friend was Softpelt, her medicine partner. She never liked calling Softpelt her apprentice because Softpelt was admittedly older than her and they both shared equal knowledge about herbs and procedures. That was Fawnheart's only true friend. Even though the medicine cat got along with just about anyone, she didn't call very many cats her friend so this was a nice feeling. "So, where were you from, Beedust?" Fawnheart asked through a mouthful of herbs, hoping she wasn't pressing the she-cat too much. She knew that Beedust had just joined the clan and was previously called Bee but didn't want to bring up any painful memories.
