A cold breeze from a cloudy sky ruffed Firewind's orange tabby fur causing a chill to run down his back as he sat in the training meadow waiting for his two apprentices to arrive. He felt honored to have been chosen to be their mentor. Wanting to see for himself how much they knew about battling, he planned to spend the rest of the day watching and teaching them in the art of war. Upon hearing a sound, he rose to his feet and turned hoping to see Luminouspaw and Infernalpaw arriving.

LUMINOUSPAW
THE DEPENDENT - NIGHTCLAN APPRENTICE
The white she-cat pressed up against her new training partner as they made their way to the meadow. She had never been apart from her siblings, and she couldn't help but glance around nervously for the familiar look of their pelts.. But they were not here... she was alone. She trembled with uncertainty, having even remained longer in the nursery to stay with her injured sister who had not been promoted on time.

"Hello Luminouspaw," Firewind meowed, noticing she seemed a bit nervous. He sniffed the air and looked around for anything out of place, like a fox scent for example. But there was nothing other than the normal training meadow smells and sounds. Relaxing, he asked, "Is there something troubling you?"

"It's nothing" she murmrered. She didn't really know this cat, and even though he was the new deputy it was going to take more than that to get the shy she-cat to open up about her fears. She looked down at her paws, shuffling them nervously.

Aware that Luminouspaw was holding something back, Firewind decided not to press the issue any farther. He wasn't one to pry into other's private lives. If she ever wanted to talk he'd be there to listen to her and offer any advice if appropriate. "Well then," he meowed, "while were waiting for Infernalpaw to arrive, why don't you tell me how far along you are in your training? Are you past the basics like how to use the hunter's crouch and the first battle moves?"
She shook her head "Your my first mentor" she looked down at her paws shuffling them. Would he think less of her after that? She was old enough to have begun training a moon or two before but had remained in the nursery to be with her sickly sister

"Well, that's good," Firewind replied. "I guess I was misinformed. I thought both you and Infernalpaw were being reassigned. Now this way I know for sure where to begin your training." Inwardly he berated himself. Wasn't he paying attention when Flamingstar spoke to him about his new apprentices? Or maybe she wasn't clear enough. Either way now he knew.
"The first thing I'll show you is the hunter's crouch. This basic position is very important." He crouched low and continued to explain. "See how my feet are even with my shoulders? That gives you stability so you won't tip over. Also keep your tail straight out behind you. You don't want it dragging on the ground or held high to get caught on low branches. Any sound you make may scare away your intended prey." He rose to a normal stance. "Now let's see you do it."

Luminouspaw nodded, before crouching down and trying to do what her mentor had just showed her. Although her form wasn't terrible for a first attempt, her muscled kept trembling. Though from nervousness or strain it was difficult to make out.

Firewind walked around Luminouspaw looking at her crouch. "Not bad," he meowed as he circled her again. "Not bad for a first attempt. You'll strengthen your muscles as you train. That'll keep them from quivering. You can relax now." He moved back a pace or two and got back into his hunter's crouch. "Now this is how you move forward," he said demonstrating it himself. "Keep low and place your feet down softly and quietly. Be sure to keep them even with your shoulders as you walk because if you move them too close together like this," he moved his feet in closer, "you can lose your balance and tip over." He began to wobble then fell over, albeit in an exaggerated manner.

Luminouspaw dipped her head respectfully "I don't think I will ever be able to move that quietly" she murmmered, but she dropped into the crouch once more to try and copy he mentor the best that she could. The movement felt strange and wrong

He was pretty late, but honestly, if Infernalpaw noticed it, he didn't say anything. Rather, the tom cast a concerned glance behind himself, like he was expecting someone to jump out after him, before hesitantly waving his paw in greeting as he spoke up. "I'm here." The tom noted. He was almost a warrior, so at this point, it was all just honing the skills he had that was left.

Firewind watched Luminouspaw get into her crouch and start to move forward. "Loosen up. You need to relax a little," he told her. "If you're too stiff you'll make too much noise." Then hearing Infernalpaw's greeting, he turned his head. "Glad you could make it. Since you're now here, would you mind showing Luminouspaw how you stalk prey?"
