(Flamingsoul leaks Soaringstar's secret, turning the clan against her)
Flamingsoul barged into the camp, a smirk plastered on her scarred face. She stood at the center of the main cavern and rose her voice so that it echoed throughout the entire cavern. "Cats of Nightclan! Gather here in the main cavern! I have something to say!" She knew Soaringstar would come running out at any time, demanding a reason for Flamingsoul to be making a clan announcement.
Echomelody slid out of the warrior's den, blinking sleep out of her eyes. It was still early. It was only dusk outside. Why was Flamingsoul making an announcement now? She looked confused but sat down a few lengths away from Flamingsoul to listen to what the deputy had to say.
Umbrahound followed, sharing the same confused expression. "What's going on?"
Shadowfeather took a seat on the outskirts of the gathering cats, his intense green eyes locked on Flamingsoul.
As Flamingsoul had expected Soaringstar quickly emerged from the leader den, expression confused but also a bit irritated.
"Flamingsoul, why are you calling a meeting rather than discussing whatever the matter is with me?" Soaringstar asked as she came over. "Calling a clan meeting is the duty of a leader, barring particular instances."
Fierypaw huffed emerging from the apprentices den rolling her eyes. Of course, Flamingsoul wanted to try and seize more power than she had. "Ugh, it's like she thinks she's leader, even though Soaringstar like went and got her lives just a few moonrises ago," She muttered towards some of her denmates that were close. Knowing most wouldn't rat her out to Flamingsoul.
Skypaw frowned at her cousin, though Fierypaw and her siblings were unhappy about Burningstar's absence, that didn't give her the right to be so disparaging towards the deputy. Shaking her head she turned her head towards where she could hear Flamingsoul's voice, ears pricked to listen.
Beetleflight slipped in beside Echomelody eyes concerned as he looked between Flamingsoul and the newly arrived Soaringstar.
Hanging far back almost into the shadows of the caverns, Frozenfire looked on with interest, blue eyes gleaming with excitement. Her tail was wrapped around her kits preventing them from wandering too far from her, her teeth were almost barred as she grinned in the shadows. This would be it. Finally the path to leadership would be open once again.
Flamingsoul swung her head toward Soaringstar, unfazed by the leader's frustration. "You dont deserve to be leader, Soaringstar." Flamingsoul grinned, her voice low enough only for Soaringstar to hear. Then she turned to the Nightclan cats, raising her voice for them to hear. "You all follow Soaringstar, thinking she is fit to be Nightclan's leader! But she isn't! She has a secret that she buried and hid from the rest of you!" She paused, letting the shocked murmurs spread through the crowd. When the whispers died down, Flamingsoul spoke again. "Soaringstar is a fraud! She stole kits from Brookclan just so her and her mate can get into Nightclan! Her kits are not hers! They belonged to a Brookclan queen that had her kits kitnapped so that she can get into Nightclan!" She swung an accusing paw at the leader. "She used them and broke the warrior code! She is not fit to be leader!"
Rasputin slid toward the crowd, looking unimpressed as the deputy made her announcement. She was going to look pathetic up there when she was reminded of her rank in front of the whole clan. It wasn't her job to call meetings and they all knew it. As she began to speak, though, the grizzled tom paused. He hadn't expected that after all this time someone would find out the truth of what they'd done. It was true his supposed kits didn't look like him at all, but nobody had questioned it before. The large tom lowered his head slowly, his lips tightening and beginning to tug back away from his teeth. If things went sour he was going to defend his leader; Soaringstar had fought with her position tooth and claw, and the zany old healer they'd taken the kits from wouldn't have looked after them anyway.
Wildhunt's ears pinned back in shock. "Are you sure about this?" he murmured, his voice soft under the crowd and doubtful. He had never seen his leader act with malice, much less think her capable of stealing kittens.
Specklestorm bristled as he stood tall. "Code breaker! Kit thief!"
"Yes, I'm sure!" The ginger she-cat responded to Wildhunt. "Isnt that right, Soaringstar?" She grinned, turning back to the leader. A part of Flamingsoul felt bad for double crossing Soaringstar as she had been kind to her but she needed to be leader and this was the way to do it.
Umbrahound felt outraged. He stood up and pinned his ears back. "How could you steal kits?"
Echomelody frowned, flattening her ears in surprise at all the hostility. "Now, wait a minute!" Echomelody interrupted, rising to her paws. "Weve all made mistakes!"
Flamingsoul flattened her ears and growled at Echomelody, "Oh, like how you allowed a Dayclan cat steal prey from our rivers?"
The black and white she-cat felt hot under her fur with embarrassment as Flamingsoul pointed out that she had, indeed, allowed a Dayclan cat take fish. She sat back down and lowered her head, feeling ashamed.
Beetleflight shifted to stand close to Echomelody, tail brushing her flank as he watched this unfold claws digging into the earth. What did this mean?
Soaringstar looked at Flamingsoul stunned. Her ears flattened as she registered the shouts her eyes darting through the crowd seeing the angry and confused faces. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
They were never supposed to know.
After Springlockedgrave’s death, after Kerrigan’s death no one else besides herself, Glowstar, Burningstar and Rasputin knew the truth.
Except.... except!
Her eyes landed on Turbulentsea eyes wide. After she’d received a life from Springlockedgrave it had stirred up all the memories.
Had he told Flamingsoul? Had he betrayed her.
And Flamingsoul after stealing Burningstar’s kits back didn’t understand?
“Is it true?!” Duskwing shouted from the back. “Did you steal the litter you brought to NightClan Soaringstar?”
“You know they didn’t take much after Rasputin.” Squirrelleap growled narrowing his eyes. “Them not being his and Soaringstar’s explains it.”
“Oh please it explains so much,” Frozenfire drawled before Soaringstar could speak. “BrookClan’s Tsar suddenly forming an alliance with Burningstar, Burningstar getting that mate Lindon, our alliance with Brook and Sun way back when, open your eyes you fools! At the core of it was a stolen litter of kits, selfishly taken so Soaringstar could circumvent Shiverstar’s rules! And why we were seemingly at Brook’s beck and call despite us just being ‘allies’.”
Murmurs rose up at Frozenfire’s statement.
“It was odd that BrookClan and NightClan were suddenly allies,” Bleakwind muttered narrowing his eyes. “And Tsar Kerrigan did show up unannounced after Burningstar became leader and Soaringstar had brought her litter.”
“This is all ridiculous! My aunt loves us, and our cousins! What kind of kitnapper would steal kits and love them like her own?” Fierypaw retorted.
“That is true, Soaringstar does love her children.... but if she stole them.” stealthclaw grit her teeth. “That is still a crime,”
Echomelody didn't look at Beetleflight. Her crime was nearly as bad as Soaringstar's. She had no right to stand up for the leader but she did feel comfort in Beetleflight's gesture.
Flamingsoul nodded to Frozenfire. Perhaps Frozenfire should have been the one to give away Soaringstar's secret. It didn't matter who revealed it. Either way, the clan would have turned on Soaringstar and Flamingsoul would have become leader. The ginger she-cat turned to Soaringstar once more. "Is it true, Soaringstar? Do you deny this?" The leader had been silent all this time. How could she represent a clan if she couldn't follow the warrior code? Flamingsoul had stolen Burningstar's kits from Moonclan but she was returning the kits to their rightful mother. She did something wrong for the right reason and no one got hurt. Soaringstar broke a mother's heart for a selfish reason.
Skypaw hadn't been able to say anything. She just sat there stiffly, blind eyes wide and mouth open. Her head turned partially towards the cat she'd thought was her mother. Or was she her mother?
Soaringstar took a deep breath and straightened up. "When Shiverstar led, the only way for me to join with my mate was if we had kits. We didn't have any at the time, but we knew Springlockedgrave of BrookClan was expecting." Gasps met her words.
Skypaw's legs shook, Springlockedgrave, the name of her birth mother. A cat she'd never met. Beside her, Fierypaw's mouth was opening and closing looking between her 'cousin' and her aunt, stunned.
"Springlockedgrave had a history of health problems, StarClan rest her soul. And her own older kits sadly held little love for her. So when we sought to take her litter from her, we received their aid." Soaringstar said, voice surprisingly calm as she sought out and found 'her' kits in the crowd. Skypaw, Blazepaw, Infernalpaw and Raspberrypaw. Skypaw looked horrified and it made Soaringstar wince but continue.
"We took them from her and brought them back to NightClan right away. Shiverstar offered no protest when we joined with them." She said simply. Then she lifted her chin. "It is true I stole these kits, but when I told Turbulentsea," Her gaze went to the medicine cat. "After my lives ceremony, it was because Springlockedgrave had given me a life. I do not know if she holds ill will towards me, and I have apologized to her for what I've done. But, know this. Skypaw, Blazepaw, Raspberrrypaw and Infernalpaw might not have been mine by blood. But I've loved them more than anything. I would move heaven and earth for them, and they have grown up safe and secure in NightClan while their birth mother spiraled into destruction and eventually her clan as well. I know that though my initial intentions were not pure, I have done nothing but right by these kits. They are my children." Soaringstar said firmly.

Turbulentsea had sat near the back of the crowd as the meeting was suddenly called. The thin tom rarely got involved directly with these meetings, but something was different. It was not Soaringstar that had called all the cats to gather, but Flamingsoul. Yet as she spoke, he felt his heart sink. Yes he had talked to Flamingsoul about this, but he had never imagined that she would have done something this drastic. A wave of guilt washed over him, as his large ears slowly sank down towards his head and his gaze fell to the ground. It was clear she thought he done this to hurt her, even though that wasn't the case. But was Flamingsoul really doing the wrong thing? Or was she just doing what needed to be done? what he couldn't do himself. What she was saying wasn't a lie... All she was doing was revealing the truth of Soaringstar's past to the clan, was that so wrong? The truth was important, Soaringstar had broken the code and should be punished. He didn't feel that is was his place to make such judgments, but the clan had the right to know. She would be given a chance to tell her side of the story, and if the clan decided that she had done wrong, well then he done the right thing in speaking up right? But if it had been the right thing, then why did he feel this knot in his stomach. His yellow gaze finally rose to meet hers "Soaringstar, the code is the code"
Blazepaw knew what was about to happen, as all the color drained from his face at the revelation. The trembles that plagued him took hold, freezing him in place except for the mucles that trembled and contracted. Not only was Soaringstar not his mother, but he had been stolen from another clan... He had never even gotten to meet his real parents. His mind began to swim, but it was all to much for the young cat to handle. He collapsed, his mind fading into darkness. His muscles continued to contract, pulling him into a tight ball hidden under the paws in the sea of faces.

Praline had come back to camp shortly before the announcement started. At first, she was furious, ready to jump up and give Flamingsoul what for. Soaringstar was her friend, the first to really accept her into Nightclan. Were they really about to turn their back on her so easily? Over some kits that were better here than there? She didn't know the details, she didn't want to. Even when Soaringstar said her half of the story, it only made her fur bristle more. She didn't understand, she really didn't. How some code could change a cat's life just like that. "How does that make her unfit for leadership? Make her worse than anyone else here?"
"But you stole them from a queen! How would it make you feel if someone thought you weren't a fit mother for your kits and stole them from you to get into another clan?" Flamingsoul challenged Soaringstar, narrowing her turquoise eyes as she questioned the leader's actions. Then Flamingsoul's cold stare landed on Praline, "how do you know there isnt more that she is hiding? How can we trust her now? She has hidden this secret from everyone! Who knows what else she is hiding that she is not telling us!" Flamingsoul's unforgiving eyes landed on Soaringstar again but she continued to talk to the clan. "How can we be sure she won't lie to us again? How can we trust a leader that cant trust her clan?"
Soaringstar's eyes narrowed into slits. "Don't speak to me about keeping secrets." She hissed. "You're from the league Flamingsoul, I know you have done terrible things. And I never asked you once about them... and I won't." She said stepping back casting her eyes over the clan.
"Before you were even a member of NightClan Flamingsoul, before even my sister took over, NightClan was a place of no trust. Shiverstar claimed NightClan was a brotherhood, but in reality all her efforts to turn NightClan into a family only turned it into a distrustful place. Every cat here has their secrets, we live in the darkness, and the shadows they hide things from us. Even what's in our hearts."
"Enough of this," Frozenfire scoffed flicking her tail. "You don't deny what you've done, you stole children from a queen and claimed them as your own. As Flamingsoul has said how can we trust a leader who won't trust their clan?"
Soaringstar narrowed her eyes. "It would seem I'd be right to do so. My only crime was stealing those kits and then raising them like any mother would! I-"
"Blazepaw!" Fernshadow cried having been looking for her apprentice, worried about his reaction to all that was happening. The dusty brown tabby shoved through the crowd to get to her apprentice. "Turbulentsea! He's having an episode!" She crouched beside her apprentice, checking him over worriedly.
"Blazepaw!" Skypaw cried heading to where she'd heard Fernshadow's cry, able to smell her brother and his fear scent.
Soaringstar's head turned to watch as Fernshadow fretted over her seizing son. Immediately she abandoned the argument and moved to go towards Blazepaw, "Is he all right? Is he okay?!" She cried cats barring her path towards her son, and her ears flattened at the angry looks she was receiving the distrust clear in their eyes.
Raspberrypaw was picking a part at a dandelion, her mom sure looked stressed about this weird thing. But it was silly. Soaringstar, not her mom? She rolled her eyes, what a bat brained theory! Of course she was her mom because she called her mom, duh! If Soaringstar wasn't her mom Raspberrypaw knew that she would remember. She didn't know why her mom was going along with Flamingsoul on this, maybe because that was the kind of nice person Soaringstar was. She probably felt embarrassed for Flamingsoul's horrible theory and was going along with it for pity. Yeesh, Flamingsoul definitely needed to get a mate and fast.
Flamingsoul scoffed, "oh please, Soaringstar. Dont act like you actually care about him! Remember, you just used him to get into Nightclan." The flame colored she-cat approached the Nightclan leader again. "Ill make a deal with you, Soaringstar. If you step down now, I will allow you to stay and be with your so-called 'kits'."

Turbulentsea was already at the young cats side checking him over as the other cats continued to fight. The young tom had been suffering from these trembles for as long as he had known him, and there wasn't much that could be done other than to let it pass and keep him safe. He placed one paw firmly on Blazepaw's head, tilting it upwards to keep his air way free even as his limbs began to flail and his eyes rolled back in his head. He could smell blood from where he had bitten his tongue, this episode being far more violent than the others he had witnessed. "Give him room" he ordered, glaring at the cats who had ventured to close. All he could do was keep him from hitting anything until it passed, and watch over him carefully to ensure he was still breathing.
Soaringstar rounded on Flamingsoul, "Pretend?! You get out of my way to see my son right now," She growled through gritted teeth. "I have raised them since they were small, I have loved them, I have cherished them, and I received a life from their birth mother tasking me with caring for them, protecting them. They stopped being pawns the moment I had them. I would go to the Dark Forest and back for them... my one regret was the hurt I caused their mother, and that's between me and Springlockedgrave. Not you. And she gave me a life, she tasked me with caring for her kits that I have taken on, and have never once faltered in my care."
Frozenfire scoffed, "Except it means you're a dirty liar," She spat but she stepped aside to let Soaringstar rush over to Blazepaw's side, keeping back to not interfere with Turbulentsea's work.
Soaringstar didn't grace Frozenfire's response with an answer instead rushing close to her son, shoving her way through till she was beside Fernshadow. "Oh Blazepaw, I'm so sorry," Soaringstar whispered looking at her son as he thrashed, her eyes filled with sorrow.
"Oh you can drop the act, do you take us for mousebrains?!" Frozenfire snarled. "NightClan has been sliding back, and maybe Shiverstar didn't have us being 'one big happy family' but we were strong, we knew where the lines were and we stayed within them or got thrown out. And since your joining was illegitimate to begin with, you have no place in NightClan let alone as its leader."
"My mom is leader and she wouldn't approve of this!" Fierypaw shouted.
"And yet Burningstar isn't here to say anything," Duskwing said tartly. "And clearly won't be back for a while otherwise why did Soaringstar need nine lives anyway? We need a leader now, and after this revelation. I can't support Soaringstar any longer. It has been clear from the start that she was ill-fitted to the position and this just clinches it. Soaringbird has merely been playing at leader and enough is enough. NightClan needs a leader,"

"StarClan gave her her lives anyway. So what does her past matter?" Infernalpaw didn't really know how to feel, and to be quite honest, the tom had disappeared as a young kit, so perhaps had a touch less attachment than his other siblings. Or he told himself so, at least.
Flamingsoul nodded in appreciation for Frozenfire's backup. She was right. Even if the clan could forgive her past, she was still soft. Too soft for Nightclan. "Frozenfire and Duskwing is right. We need someone strong to run this clan. Someone who will make us fierce again." Flamingsoul turned to the rest of the clan. "Who else agrees? It is time for a change! It is time to make Nightclan fierce again! It is time for Nightclan to take their own path! We dont need to be bossed around by the pride!" She began to pace. "Burningstar and Soaringstar have followed the Dayclan and Sunclan cats around like little lost puppies. Well, the time for that is over! I say we regain our independence! Allow me to lead you!" She leaped up onto the high crystal. "I will make Nightclan what is should be! A clan we can be proud of!"

"And when were we fierce? Thought that was the League's way. What's wrong with how we are." Praline muttered to herself. She really was a League cat, always wanting to be tough and covered in blood. Praline couldn't focus on that, it seemed like her words fell on deaf ears. Instead, she kept a close eye on Blazepaw. She was invited into Soaringstar's family, she couldn't help but be concerned for the apprentice but she didn't get too close.

Turbulentsea didn't look at Soaringstar, keeping his gaze on Blazepaw. He couldn't help but feel like Flamingsoul had a point. If Soaringstar had kept this from then, than what else was she hiding? How could they trust a leader who had broken the warrior code... Whose whole acceptance into the clan had been a lie? He still felt guilty about telling Flamingsoul about the revelation, but at the same time if he hadn't done anything, he to would have been lying. Blazepaw's trembles had slowed, but it was still to dangerous to move him until he regained conciousness
