Laughingkit hobbled around camp blinking as he looked around for his clanmates. The only surviving kit of Timerous and Eternalstar, Foxstar, well, Foxbane now, hadn't left him in a well place. Half his tail was gone, his left eye blind, and worst of all, the lower half of his right foreleg had been cut off. He was a miracle of the medicine cats, having not been expected to survive, let alone be able to do much of anything. And yet, here he was, finally healed up, and learning to manage despite the challenges he faced.
Knightpaw saw Laughingkit hobbling around and the dark gray tom felt a pang in his heart.
He'd heard the story. Eternallaughter, now immortalized as Eternalstar in StarClan in honor of his time as one of the four leaders when Glowstar was away, murdered by Foxbane along with Timerous and their children... except for little Laughingkit.
He still couldn't believe it. The cat he'd once respected, once been left conflicted over whether he cared for her more than his own birth mother. Had turned out to be a monster. Stealing Laughingkit's entire family, along with a happy carefree life.
He felt guilty for ever thinking highly of Foxbane. And he couldn't understand how Glowstar, knowing what Foxbane had done to his family, and now to Eternalstar's. How she could still be friends with Foxbane.
Swallowing tightly he went over to Laughingkit. "Hello Laughingkit... H-how are you today?" He asked voice wavering uncertain where to start. He wanted to tell the kit he was so sorry no one had prevented this from happening. That so many tolerated the one who had done this to him. That even after this a part of Knightpaw could only see the Foxbane who praised him for his drive to be a good little one of her numbers, rather than the cold heartless killer she apparently was.
He knew a lot about Foxbane, and the entire situation, thanks to cats talking when they thought he couldn't hear. Everyone tried to focus on his parents, father especially, when he was awake, and it was interesting to hear about what exactly had happened, who had caused him these injuries. They glossed over it otherwise, and if he hadn't found out the information on his own, he wondered if he'd ever have really known at all. Of course, he could hear the rumors well enough, cats weren't nearly so quiet as they thought themselves to be, so he probably would have, just a touch later.
All in all, he found Foxbane to be a rather pathetic creature, to have to take out her anger on a mere kit to show some ex-mate who was boss. She didn't deserve to see him suffer as a result. So, he'd made up his mind to be happy, no matter what. And if he couldn't be happy, then he wouldn't let anyone know it. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction of knowing she'd broken a kitten.
Laughingkit was startled from his thoughts when Knightpaw appeared, and the tom blinked two cerulean eyes with amber cores. Lifting the stump of his right leg, the tom gave a small wave. "I'm out of the medicine den for good!" He announced, offering a smile that rivaled the other kits.
Knightpaw was surprised, taking in the happy demeanor of Laughingkit. "That's good!" He said trying to match the smile on the kits face. "I'm glad to hear that, you've been in there for far too long."
His eyes though fell to where Laughingkit's stump was and he forced himself to focus on Laughingkit's eyes. "So now that you're out, what do you want to do?" He asked.
