Firewind looked around the camp wondering where he should begin. The fresh kill pile was low, the borders needed patrolled, and the dens could use some fortification for the coming cold season. He didn't realize until now how hard it was to be the deputy. A cold gust of wind ruffled his fur as he looked around for any unoccupied cats he could recruit. Perhaps he should get a start on the dens and send out a hunting patrol. But who to ask?
Umbrahound was snoozing by the warrior's den. The all black tom was nearly invisible against the shadows of the cavern. He was always volunteering for patrols but tonight, he just felt lazy. He wouldn't be opposed for a patrol but laying down for once felt nice. He stretched out his front paws and then curled them back underneath him, a low purr sounded from his chest as he took in the relaxation.

As Firewind gazed about the camp his eyes fell on Umbrahound resting near the warrior's den. Perhaps he'll be willing to go hunting, he thought as he padded over to the peaceful looking cat. "Um, hello," he began still not used to giving orders. "I'm looking for any cat who's willing to help. Would you go out hunting with me? The fresh kill pile is low."
Umbrahound opened his warm amber eyes and let out a lazy yawn. The large, muscular tom climbed to his paws and met Firewind's gaze. "Sure. I was trying to get some rest but it can wait. Where would you like to go?" Umbrahound knew Firewind was uncomfortable giving orders but the flame colored tabby needed to get used to it. If he approached another cat like the way he did, some cats may not take him serious. So, if they were going out to hunt, Firewind was going to make all the decisions.

"The hot springs may have some mice out looking for food," Firewind suggested. "Let's look there first." It pleased him how Umbrahound agreed to hunt even though he wanted to rest. Perhaps being deputy wouldn't be so hard after all. He led the way out of the camp toward the east. They'd cross the stream at the land bridge. He couldn't wait to warm his paws at the hot springs. This cold air was getting to him.
"The hot springs sound like a great idea" Umbrahound agreed as he followed the deputy. Perhaps the black tom would be able to dip his paws into the hot springs for a little warming up. The thought of that made him quicken his pace slightly. Why didn't he think of that earlier? With the cooling weather, a trip to the hot springs sounded amazing. He walked alongside Firewind, "how does it feel being deputy?"

"Overwhelming," was the first thing he said and then just as quickly regretted it. So to cover his tracks he immediately he added, "And honoring, humbling, exciting, just to name a few of the feelings I've had recently." It felt good to be talking about this. He hadn't opened up to any cat about how he felt since his promotion. "And a little scary too ... not that I'm a 'fraidy cat." No cat had better call me that! "It's just that part of the clan's well being has fallen on my shoulders. I just don't want to let my clanmates down."
