"I see," Stonefang laughed but not in a mean way. "But the edge was usually well defined and most cats stayed away from it. The few who were foolhardy and reckless were the ones who put themselves in danger by trying to climb down the sides in search of prey." He remembered a friend of his a few seasons back who would purposely hunt there just for the thrill of it. One day he disappeared and was never heard from since. "If you lived there, I don't think you'd be in any danger from it. From what I can tell about you, you'd just stay away like any sensible cat."
Reluctant to leave but knew they should, Cutthroat stood up and stretched. "You know the one thing I really liked about the time we were wandering after we lost our home?" He didn't wait for Celestialglow to reply but continued on. "Being able to eat our catches as soon as we caught them. There's just something very satisfying about eating a mouse or a squirrel while it's still warm." He bent down and picked up his lone mouse by it's tail.
"Who said I was a sensible cat?" Pebblefur joked with a chuckle.
Celestialglow nodded, "oh yes, I agree completely." She bent down to pick up her prey but hesitated. Then she lifted her head back up, leaving her prey laying on the ground. She paused for a split moment before speaking. "What...what if we ran away?" Her eyes met his but there was a seriousness in her expression.

"What? You're not?" Stonefang replied half joking. "From what I can tell - what little I know of you that is - you seem to have a good head on your shoulders."
Cutthroat's mouth dropped open in surprise causing the mouse he held drop to the ground. His first impulse was a resounding 'YES!' but then cautions came into his mind. Celestialglow was carrying their kits and that would mean extra responsibility for them both. And this was only the beginning of Leafbare. They wouldn't have a clan to rely upon during the hard, cold moons ahead. If it were just the two of them things would be different. He'd leave with her right now. "That sounds so tempting," he finally said. "But you're with kits and Leafbare has only just started. I'm concerned about what might happen to them."
She purred and gave him a playful nudge with her shoulder. "Your probably right." She chuckled. "Hey! We're almost there!" She bounded forward several more fox-lengths, the sound of a thundering waterfall split the air and drowning out the sounds of nature. She halted at the edge of the lake, the waterfall filling the large hole with water. At the end of the lake, a small stream emptied out the extra water. "We're here! Isnt it beautiful?" She piped, giving a small bounce of excitement. "Theres so many fish here! I dont like the taste of fish but I like watching them swim! Oh look! There's one!" She pointed to a large carp swam close to the water's edge and it was just visible beneath the surface.
Celestialglow glanced at her belly and frowned. "Your probably right. It would be too dangerous for them out there." She paused for a moment. "Alright" she mewed at last. "We'll stay here for now. Let's get back to camp so we can eat. I'm starved!" She concluded, her belly growling. Since their time sitting here, she began to grow more hungry. After all, she had more mouths to feed, now. The expecting queen picked up her two mice by their tails and headed toward camp, keeping pace with her mate and walking close enough so that their pelts brushed.

He heard the rushing water long before he saw it. Stonefang ran to keep up with Pebblefur excitement coursing through his veins. Upon reaching the water's edge, he gazed up at the tall falls in awe. "Wow..." he mewed in amazement. "This is so magnificent!" The spray from the falling water began to cling to his fur in tiny water droplets giving him a sparkling appearance. He looked where Pebblefur was watching the fish and came closer. "Yes! I can see it. Its a big one! Are you going to catch it?" He heard her say she didn't like to eat them but what would prevent her from bring it back to the camp for others to eat?
Cutthroat hated disappointing his mate. But he did pick up on something she said. We'll stay here for now. Perhaps come Newleaf when the kits would be able to travel they could leave. He picked up the mouse he dropped and walked next to Celestialglow. "You know," he said while holding onto the mouse's tail. "We could always leave at a more convenient time for us." He definitely didn't want to close the door on this discussion.

(That's alright. I figured you were busy with NC stuff.)
"Me?" Stonefang asked. "I was never trained to do so. EarthClan cats didn't eat fish. There wasn't many in our stream and as for the river at the bottom of the gorge, no one ventured there to find out." He stared into the water watching them. "I suppose I'll have to learn how since I'm living here now."
"I don't know what I'd do without you," Cutthroat replied. "You've done a lot for me." He thought back over his life before he got to know Celestialglow. He was a different cat now. She softened him a bit, smoothed off his rough edges. "You made my life so much better."
"Well, I've never been good at fishing but I suppose I could give it a try!" Pebblefur supposed, taking a deep breath. She leaned back on her haunches and raised a paw slightly. She waited for the carp to come closer to the shore. After a few moments, it finally got close enough. She swiped at it with her paw, causing a big splash. With the momentum she had used for her swipe had off balanced her and she took a dive into the pond. It wasn't deep where she had fallen and she sat up in the water, a weed dangling from one ear. She turned to look at Stonefang, flashing him a sheepish smile and feeling hot under her fur in embarrassment.
Celestialglow grinned, her heart fluttering. "And you've made mine so much better." It was true. Before he had come along, she, too, had been rough around the edges and even though some of those edges still existed, she was a lot smoother. "I'm about to have a bunch of little angels now" She looked down at her belly, pride growing inside her. This was the family she always wanted and never knew she would ever have. She knew she was hard to get along with at times but Cutthroat had been patient enough with her and had made all her dreams come true.

A big grin spread across Stonefang's face that quickly changed to a look of concern. He knew that getting soaked was a very bad idea during the cold season. "Here let me help you out of there," he meowed as he reached out a paw. "You'll need to get dried off fast so you won't get sick." He remembered a time when he was an apprentice one of his friends fell in the stream in EarthClan. That friend got so sick that he missed out on being promoted on time. He really didn't want to see Pebblefur get sick.
"All the more reason we should catch something and head back to camp," Cutthroat meowed as he rubbed his cheek against hers. "We got to take care of our future family." A father! He's actually going to become a father! The thought just thrilled him. And not only that thought, also the possibility of moving out on their own someday.
Pebblefur hooked her paw around his outstretched paw as he hoisted her up out of the pond. The frigid air made her shiver but it was no where near as cold as the water had been. She hook the water from her fur and unhooked the weed from her ear. "Well, that didn't work" she chuckled through chattering teeth.
Celestialglow nodded in agreement and picked up the two mice she had caught. She gave a nod toward the direction of the camp, indicating that she was going to start heading back. The sun was going down by the time Celestialglow and Cutthroat had made it back. She deposited her two mice into the fresh-kill pile and chose a rabbit for herself. "Would you like to share this?" She asked through a mouthful of fur.

"I guess not," Stonefang replied. "We've got to get you dry. Look, you're already shivering." He began to groom the fur on her back where it's hard to reach. As he did so it hit him like a ton of boulders. He hadn't groomed any other cat since the death of his mate. He paused briefly but then continued his licking. It took him a considerable amount of mental effort to push the memories from his mind. If he didn't help Pebblefur get dry, she could become ill and maybe even ... even die!
"I'd love to!" he replied. "Excellent choice. I'm starving. Let's sit over there and eat it." He indicated a place near the warriors den with a wave of his tail. No other cats were nearby and that suited him fine. He still wanted to be alone with his mate. A thought struck him as they made there way over - it wouldn't be too long now before he'd have to sleep alone. Celestialglow would move into the nursery and he'd be all by himself in their nest. The thought saddened him but then he chided himself for being selfish. Having kits would be worth it!
"I'm fine" Pebblefur chuckled. "I've survived worse." It was true. She had been one of the lucky survivors of the illness that swept through Summerclan. She began to groom her own fur as well, already feeling warmer with Stonefang's help.
Celestialglow settled down beside Cutthroat and leaned against him as she took a little bite out of the rabbit before passing it to him, gesturing for him to take a bite. "You know" she mewed, her mouth full of prey. She swallowed before continuing her sentence. "You could probably stay with me in the nursery. I'm sure there won't be too many queens in there since it really isn't the right time to be having kits."

"You must have led an adventurous life so far then," Stonefang said between licks. "I can't think of too much worse than to fall in freezing water in the middle of Leafbare." Only one time did Stonefang ever go into the water, besides the shallow crossing in EarthClan's stream, and that was on a really hot day in the middle of Greenleaf. He recalled how hot it was. Cats were getting sick so their medicine cat led them all out to the stream and told them to get in to cool off. Berryfrost looked so funny with her fur plastered to her body! His smile faded as the familiar hurt set in.
Cutthroat's head turned sharply as he turned to look at Celestialglow. "Now that is freaky," he meowed. "I was just thinking about how lonely I'm going to be when you move into the nursery. You're not getting mind reading powers from StarClan are you now?" He had a playful look in his eyes.
Pebblefur noticed how his smile faded and her kind green eyes met with his. "You miss her, dont you?" She asked though she already knew the answer. She knew hurt like this. She feels it every day. Pebblefur's mate had been missing for several countless moons. They had been newly made warriors when they had gotten together and it felt so long ago but the hurt was still there and even after all this time, she had never moved on. She had never found another mate but as time went by, she began to accept that this was change and perhaps Stonefang needed her to show him that.
She let out a laugh. "Nah, just a mother's intuition," she joked with a purr.

A soft sigh escaped from his chest. "Yes," he replied. "I wonder if it'll ever get better." Stonefang turned his eyes upward and looked into the sky. "Sometimes I'm jealous of our medicine cat's powers to be able to speak with cats in StarClan." He would give anything to see and speak to his mate again. "May I ask you something?" Then he continued on without waiting. "How do you cope with the loss of your mate? Does the pain ease over time?"
"Wow! You're developing it already? I wonder if I'll get a father's intuition," he looked into her eyes then took a bite from the rabbit. "This is delicious! I'm so glad SummerClan has rabbits on their, I mean our territory." It was still taking him some time getting used to being in a different clan.
Pebblefur touched her soft paws to his. Despite being cold, she felt that this was a much needed conversation. "Time will ease some pain but the true healing comes from you." She responded gently. "Everything in the forest has it's season. When one thing falls, another grows. Maybe not what was there before but something new and wonderful all the same." She paused for a moment before continuing. "We learn to see out of darkness and we learn to feel out of sorrow." She searched his eyes as if looking for an understanding. She knew that if he didn't accept the fact that his mate was gone, he would never be able to enjoy life again.
Celestialglow nudged him playfully with a chuckle as he brought up that he could have father intuition. She would believe that when hedgehogs sprout wings. "I'm glad they have rabbit, too! I'm not sure how I would cope without them!" At least they didn't get chosen to join a water clan. She didn't know if she would ever be able to get used to the taste of fish.

Stonefang was silent for awhile as he mulled over what Pebblefur said. Her cold touch reminded him that she needed to get warm. "It sounds like this is something you've spent a lot of time thinking about." He moved in closer so his body would be against hers. "Here let me help you warm up." He was surprised at how cold she felt. "You have a lot of wisdom for how young you are. I never really thought about my loss that way before. 'When one thing falls, another grows,'" he quoted her. "There's truth in that statement. All I could see was the darkness that surrounded me. Perhaps I should try to find the new growth in all of this." He wondered if the new growth was Pebblefur.
After taking a few more bites, Cutthroat asked, "What you said earlier about there being extra room in the nursery, you really think I can stay with you, well that is until you give birth?" He wasn't too sure he'd want to share a nest with four or five tiny kits. He'd never get any rest with them constantly climbing all over him.

Pebblefur was grateful for the warmth and leaned into Stonefang, a gentle purr rising in her chest as the warmth brought her comfort. "Yeah, I guess you could say that I've thought about this a lot but as for being wise, I'm not sure about that." A flawless smile pulled at her cheeks. "I'm glad to hear that you are willing to find growth in this. Its never easy but we can get through this together if you want." She looked into his eyes and lowered her ears. They didn't have to be anything more than friends but Pebblefur was sure that she wanted Stonefang to stay in her life. There was something about him and the connection they shared. What were the odds that two cats come together over something so equally tragic?
Celestialglow swiped her tongue around her lips. "Of course! I wouldn't want it any other way" she purred, burying her face into the curve of his neck. "You can stay after I have kits, too, you know."

"I'd like that," Stonefang meowed. Her smile warmed his heart and that surprised him. He didn't think anything could ever do that again. And was she suddenly acting a little shy with him just now? A happy feeling started to show up inside him. It was a bitter sweet time for him right now with still feeling the loss of his mate and the growing friendship he had unexpectedly found with Pebblefur. He sat silently with her for awhile before asking, "How are you feeling? Are you getting any warmer?"
Cutthroat was swallowing a piece of meat just as Celestailglow spoke and it caused him to cough. "Uh, er," he stammered. "Wouldn't I be in the way? You'll need lots of room when your nursing them."
"Um, yes, thank you. I think I'm warm enough to make it back to camp" she was grateful for Stonefang's warmth. She stood , suddenly feeling the cold air again but now her fur was a bit drier so it wasnt as serious. The sun was starting to sink and if they didn't get to camp soon, the last bit of warmth from the sun would be gone until tomorrow. It would be much colder.
Celestialglow giggled as Cutthroat choked on his rabbit after what she had said. After making sure he was okay, she answered him. "Its alright. You can stay if you want or you dont have to. It's not like your leaving camp, just changing dens."
