It had been sometime since his arrival to SummerClan but Cutthroat still didn't feel like this new clan was home. Maybe he never will. It wasn't from lack of support of the existing clan members, in fact many had gone out of their way to make him and other refugees feel welcomed. There just seemed to be something missing but he couldn't really put his paw on it. The only bright spot in his life was his mate, Celestialglow and he was so glad she was here with him. Without her life wouldn't be worth living.
He glanced over and saw his friend Stonefang. He seemed to be getting along better these days. But was it an act? He'd be devastated if he'd suffered his friend's losses. That made Cutthroat even more thankful he and Celestialglow had been out of the camp during the big disaster.
Celestialglow was adjusting well living in Summerclan. She had even smoothed some of her rough edges especially when she made friends with a calico she-cat named Pebblefur. Pebblefur was one of the older warrior who had lost her mate during the time the mountain clans fell ill during pollution caused by two-legs. She thought maybe he had been ill but they never found him. He had disappeared and as much as she looked, his trail eventually faded. She had also come down with the illness but had recovered while others werent so lucky. Although she had been through much, she still managed to stay as sweet as ever.
Celestialglow and Pebblefur pranced their way into camp with prey swinging from their jaws. They seemed to really be enjoying each other's company. The two she-cats dropped the prey on the pile and Celestialglow noticed Cutthroat and bounded up to him. She touched noses with him in greeting and gave him a lick on the cheek.
Pebblefur followed more slowly, her bold green eyes sparkling. Her fur was smooth and glossy and looked as soft as silk. Her scent smelled of sweet flowers and her voice was as gentle as a lullaby. "How are you settling in?" She asked Cutthroat when she approached.

Cutthroat was pleased to see his mate and enjoyed her greeting. He purred and returned a lick on her cheek. "Everything's so much better when you're around." His eyes sparkled with the love he held for Celestialglow. "I see you've been busy. That's a nice a catch the two of you brought in." He admired her warrior skills. She's all I ever hoped for in a mate!
"As good as can be expected," he answered Pebblefur's question. "SummerClan isn't EarthClan but it's close. The territory is similar and we hold to the same values." It would have been difficult to fit into a clan who worshiped the sun or moon or some other strange idea. He liked StarClan. They were respected but not worshiped and that suited him fine.
"Yes! Prey is so plentiful here!" She purred, her green eyes bright.
Pebblefur chuckled, "Yes, we are blessed with prey rich forests. I know Summerclan will never be Earthclan to you but I hope one day you can make this place your home." Her gaze wandered over to Stonefang. She had noticed that he had joined Summerclan with Cutthroat and Celestialglow but he always seemed a little reserved. She knew the look of loss he was portraying even though he tried to hide it. She, too, had lost someone and saw the mask he was wearing. "If you'll excuse me. I will catch up with you later." She gave one last smile to Celestialglow before padding over to Stonefang. "Hello. You must be Stonefang, right?" She asked, her voice soothing and enthusiastic.
Celestialglow looked at Cutthroat, love reflecting in her eyes, "Can we go somewhere to talk?"

Stonefang looked up slightly startled. The cats of SummerClan were friendly to him but none really went out of their way to have a conversation with him. "Um, yes," he replied. "Hello." Before him stood a very pleasant looking she cat, pretty even. Then the pain in his heart reminded him of his loss. "I'm sorry though," he continued. "I don't know your name."
"Sure," Cutthroat purred. Time with Celestialglow was always time well spent. "You lead the way." His mind wandered back to one of his favorite places to go and think, the Lookout Rock. From there one could see just about all of EarthClan's territory. A sigh escaped his chest. There is no more EarthClan.
"My apologies! Where are my manners?" She purred. "My name is Pebblefur. I'd like to officially welcome you to Summerclan. I know it will be a little hard getting used to another clan but I hope you do make yourself at home, here. We are happy to have you. If you would like a tour, I could show you around the territory?"
Celestialglow led the way, not noticing the sigh escape from her mate. She wanted to talk to him about something important but wanted to do so in private. It would be easier that way. She slipped out of the Summerclan camp with Cutthroat right behind her. She didn't know the territory very well but thanks to Pebblefur, her new friend told her of a great spot where two cats could just talk -- the Wildflower Meadow. Pebblefur had shown her the way when they were out earlier so that Celestialglow knew where to go. She picked up her pace until she was galloping through the moorlands, her tail high and her green eyes bright. She had never felt so happy in her life. Despite what Earthclan had gone through, Celestialglow saw moving to Summerclan as a way to start over. She had been rough around the edges living in Earthclan. When Cutthroat and Celestialglow first began to really notice each other, Celestialglow wasn't very happy. She loved Earthclan but often felt lonely and had viewed herself as something far less than how she views herself now. However, when Cutthroat had come into her life, it was like all of that had changed. She felt lighter and happier. Any time she was with him, all her worries and doubts would just melt away. Even when Earthclan was destroyed, she knew she would be okay as long as she had Cutthroat with her and the fate Earthclan had suffered, she began to appreciate how special Cutthroat really was to her and how she never wanted to lose him.

The last thing he wanted to do was to traipse around an unknown territory. His heart ached too much. Sure Stonefang knew the common places to go, the small creek, the oak trees, and even the rabbit meadow, though the latter he never entered. But Pebblefur was one of the few cats who seemed genuinely interested in him and he didn't want to disappoint her. "Alright," he meowed with more enthusiasm than he really felt. "I've been some places but not all, that's for sure."
Cutthoat followed Celestialglow as she led the way to an disclosed place. The area was unfamiliar to him since in all the times he had gone out on patrols he had never gone this way. He had been noticing a subtle change that had been taking place in his mate. She definitely wasn't the same cat he had helped fight off a fox with all those moons ago. She seemed more contented and sure of herself. And now she seemed very happy but that fact confused him, mainly because he hadn't been very happy ever since they'd been uprooted from their home, their real home. And what did she want to talk about that they had to go so far from the camp? Then a sudden thought struck him. Whatever she had to say, she had to say without any listening ears around. It must be important. Did she want to go back to EarthClan's territory? Is that why they had to come out this far? The thought sent a delightful shiver down his back. "Are we almost there?" he asked, anxious to know what she was thinking.

She purred, "well, I bet you haven't seen my favorite place!" Not many cats knew of the spot she was talking about. It was when she had first met her mate and even to this day, it was still her favorite place to be and she had a feeling he would like it, too. She led him out of camp, her paw steps almost silent. She was quite graceful and gentle. She was definitely not much of a fighter.
"Almost there!" Celestialglow purred as she bounded a little ways up. She eventually stopped, the Wildflower Meadow stretched out before them. Despite the cooling weather, some of the flowers had not wilted yet and the meadow still held beauty. Celestialglow took a seat at the edge, over looking the colorful clearing with her light green eyes. She patted the ground beside him with her paw, gesturing for him to join her.

"Probably not," Stonefang replied. "I'm sure I haven't seen all of SummerClan there is to see yet." Then he walked along in silence behind Pebblefur, his thoughts drifting back to EarthClan. Breaking the silence he spoke again. "I have - um - had," he corrected, "a favorite place I liked to go in EarthClan but I guess I'll never see it again." He felt as if a dark cloud kept following him around.
Cutthroat looked around the meadow. "This is a nice place." It still had a lot of the flowery scent even though it's now fading because of the coming colder weather. "So many flowers. I bet this is the main area for the medicine cat." He knew very little about herbs and plants. A few times as an apprentice he was asked to help EarthClan's medicine cat gather herbs but much of what he was told about them had remained with him. He sat down next to Celestialglow allowing his fur to brush against hers. Just being near her seemed to make his troubles not be so bad. "So, what's on your mind?" Going back to EarthClan? he hoped mentally.
"What was it like?" Pebblefur asked, her voice gentle and barely a whisper.
"Well..." Celestialglow began, suddenly looking nervous. She was so ready to tell him but now that the time was here, she couldn't exactly find the words. "I guess I should begin by saying that my time spent with you has been amazing. Everything about you is perfect. Despite all that we have been through, we stuck together and came out stronger than before. I believe it is time for a new beginning - for us." she responded, her heart racing but love reflected in her eyes. "Cutthroat..." she took a breath. "I'm expecting kits."

Stonefang looked over at Pebblefur. He was actually surprised some cat was interested in things he liked, especially one from SummerClan. This made his spirits lift ever so slightly. "It was a place called Lookout Rock," he replied. "It was on the top of our mountain. From there you could see just about all of EarthClan's territory."
Cutthroat sat there with a blank look on his face and eyes unblinking as he took in Celestialglow's words. This was not at all what he had expected to hear. Slowly what she had said sunk in. They were going to have kits! A smile gradually replaced his blank look. This perhaps was even better news than he had expected. "That's wonderful!" he purred. This news made thinking about going back to EarthClan seem so ... so remote ... so unimportant. He rubbed his cheek against hers as he continued to purr. "So life will continue on even though we lost our first home. When will they come?"
That sounded very much like the place she was going to show him. A little spark of excitement sent a jolt through her. If he liked the Look Out Rock where he came from, she was sure he was going to like hers. "That sounds so beautiful! I almost wish I could have seen it with my own eyes!"
Relief flooded over Celestialglow, seeing the happiness in her mate's eyes. She was worried that he wouldnt be happy about her news. A grin spread wide across her face and she rubbed her cheek against his in return. "It will be a little while" she purred. "I just found out!"

"I wish you could have. It was gorgeous," Stonefang replied, his eyes holding a far away look. "Especially at sunrise and sunset. The way the light shone on the landscape was ... well ... spectacular."
The news was still sinking in. Cutthroat washed gently behind Celestialglow's ears. "I wish they could have seen our real home though. They may be born in SummerClan but they'll still be full blooded EarthClan cats." Then a sudden though struck him and he pulled back, worry flooding off him in waves. "They'll be born in the middle of the worst season. Will they be able to survive in Leafbare being so young and fragile?" He knew kits were born year round but those who are born in the cold season have less chances of surviving. He had seen it happen in EarthClan.
"That sounds beautiful. It must be hard to lose your home. I couldnt imagine losing mine" Pebblefur frowned as she thought about what it would be like to lose her home. "Well, if it means anything to you, Im glad your here. I'm glad your alive and well."
Celestialglow's smile faded for a moment when she thought about what he said but then quickly returned and gave Cutthroat a nudge with her shoulder. "Come on, now. If they are anything like us, they will survive the leafbare season. I mean, look who their mother is!" She joked, dramatically puffing out her chest and grinning.

Stonefang stared for a moment at Pebblefur then blinked once. No one had said anything remotely like that to him since he arrived here. Not that he blamed anyone really, especially since the way he'd been moping around camp. He probably would have avoided himself too, if the paw was on the other leg. "Um, thanks," he replied awkwardly, casting his eyes to the ground in front of his feet. "I, uh, appreciate that."
A smile came to Cutthroat's face at Celestialglow's comment and actions. "I guess you're right about that," he purred. "They are coming from strong stock, that's for sure!" He gave her a playful shove on her shoulder. He was still concerned however, but decided not to say anymore about it. Why worry her more and what could they do about it anyway? Except try to make sure they stay warm and healthy in their first few months.
"Its no problem" she purred. "Im sorry no one has been very welcoming to you." She continued to walk, getting close to their destination, now. "I hope I've made you feel a bit more welcomed."
Celestialglow chuckled, "honestly, I was afraid you were going to be angry. Its a relief to see your just as happy as I am! That is why I went out with Pebblefur today. I wanted to ask her advice on how to tell you."

He looked up from the ground he was watching pass before him and looked at Pebblefur. "Thank you, you have," he meowed. "I guess I was ... am dealing with stuff." It was very easy for any cat to see he was grieving the loss of someone or something.
"Angry?" Cutthroat asked, genuine surprise written on his face. He was perplexed that Celestialglow would even think that about him. Had he really been that moody or gruff since their arrival here? Was that it? I had better change my attitude if that's the case. "Why? Kits are a blessing from StarClan."
Pebblefur nodded and offered him a warm smile. "We all go through hard times. It is just the way life goes. We all have our own stories." She responded, hoping to make him feel better.
"Well, things are different now. I don't think we will ever get our home back. And I know both of us are struggling to fit in around here. I was worried that maybe you wouldn't want this next step,yet...its a lot to take in, you know?" Celelstialglow mewed, relieved that Cutthroat was happy about the news. "I'm just so glad that we will be a family, now. It gives us a reason to let go of the past and continue forward."

Stonefang really didn't feel better but he was glad Pebblefur was actually talking with him. Sure he talked with other SummerClan cats but it was usually over just trivial stuff like the weather and where they were going to hunt. But she was actually listening to him, his thoughts and feelings. "I suppose you're right," he replied. He thought he'd go out on a limb and share more. "I lost my mate and several kits, some grown ones, in the flood. I should have died and not them. I wasn't there in the camp to help them when they needed me the most."
Let go of the past. Those five words spun around in his head. That would be impossible! No way would he ever forget about EarthClan! "I ... don't understand," he meowed. "I thought you were proud of your heritage just as I am. I can't let go of EarthClan. It's a part of me and always will be. I may live in SummerClan, hunt for them and even fight for them, but I will always be an EarthClan cat."
Sadness struck Pebblefur's heart when Stonefang spoke of losing his family. "I-I'm very sorry...I had no idea..." She could sort of relate. She had never had kits before but her mate had gone missing during the time of the illness and hadn't been seen since. "I lost my mate, too. We never had kits together but he...he disappeared. It was not like him to leave me or his clan...I think something bad happened to him...maybe he got sick or maybe something else happened...But I never saw him again...I still think about him every day but there is nothing more I can do. All I can hope is that one day I will move on with my life and be reunited with him in Starclan." She looked down at her paws, a single tear escaping her eye. She wiped it away with her paw and let out a chuckle. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get emotional on you. I'm here if you ever need to talk. I know what your feeling and maybe I can help."
Celestialglow shook her head, "Oh, I didn't mean we would have to forget where we came from...I'm just saying that things may never be the same again and we need to accept that." Sympathy shown in her light green eyes.
