Her voice rang across the camp, loud, clear, and summoning. It seemed to echo the morning, the dew hardly having faded from the grass and leaves. Cats began to emerge from their dens to hear what she was going on about. Soon, it became clear that the feline was holding ceremonies. “Cats old enough to chase their own rabbits, please gather for the ceremonies.” Gardeniastar was smiling, her tail curled around her paws as she awaited her clanmates to finish gathering before her.
It was then that she began to speak again,”We have a few cats to become warriors today.” She went on about their accomplishments and how proud she was of them. The young leader continued to announce the new senior warriors, and congratulated and thanked Bonefang for such a long service. However, here came the part that no one expected. Not one single cat in the crowd, not even her own deputy.
“Moorpaw, you will be mentored by Arsenicedge. You have been through a lot in your life, and I know he will know the perfect way for your training. Batpaw, your mentor will be Gentlebreeze. They have a lot to teach you, as they’ve seen many seasons. Tansypaw, Slippaw, and Turtlepaw, please step forward.” The orange tabby leader gazed down at the three with shining eyes. “This decision was beyond hard. There are so many willing and strong warriors ready to pass on their teachings, but in each of you I’ve seen special things. I’ve decided that I will mentor all three of you.”
Cats broke out in confused yowls. The clan suddenly became unhinged. A few in the crowd spoke.
“What?! It’s unheard of!” “Gardeniastar, have you gone mad?!” “Three apprentices!” “What will StarClan think?” “There’s other warriors who can train them!”
She’d expected a bit of a reaction, but this was not exactly what she’d imagined. Never the less, she’d made her announcement and decision.
“Enough!” She snapped, tail now lashing. “I will mentor them. This is final.”
Turtlepaw had shuffled his paws casting his single eye downwards.
Special things? He was a traumatized scrap who only had one good eye and far too many scars to speak of. He was still adjusting to SummerClan territory. He wasn't anything special.
Gardeniastar must be hiding the fact that she felt she needed two good apprentices to make up for having him as an apprentice. His ears lowered at the outcry feeling fearful. What if the clan wanted to kick him out or leave him to die? Chimerahunt wasn't leader anymore, he was at the mercy of SummerClan now. His heart rate quickened at the thought of Gardeniastar pitting him against the healthy Tansypaw and Slippaw. Though Tansypaw had been nice and Slippaw was also from WaterClan, he couldn't compete with them.
His heart continued to race and he shrunk lower as much as he could from his spot too close to the spotlight.
"Ha, we did it!" Eldin beamed at his brother. "About time!"
He hadn't wanted to come watch. He wanted to have peace and quiet to himself again, to be completely alone and unwanted and forgotten, but instead he stiffly rose and joined the gathering, because his clan was still here and he owed it to them not to cause trouble. Chimerahunt still hadn't asked to join, not officially; he'd been allowed to stay after Doestar's death but hadn't truly joined the clan and he doubted this new leader would tolerate that arrangement much longer. He needed to decide and he dreaded when that day would come. As his niece and apprentice were given new mentors he raised his voice with the crowd, filled with regret that he'd failed yet again. Chim had failed in so many ways but he thought if he could do one thing right it would be to help the maimed apprentice learn how to cope without an eye and prevent him from ever turning out like Chim. Instead he couldn't even finish training the little one. The ginger tom rose slowly as the ceremony ended and turned to leave, but spotting Turtlepaw's terror, hesitated and headed for him instead.
"Try a smile," he began gruffly, his half-gaze pinning down Turtlepaw. "You're finally going to be a warrior now that you've got a good mentor. I'm counting on you to keep the others safe, got it? Swangrace would have my tail if her daughter was hurt."
Ragingspire watched the ceremony skeptically, then let out a laugh. "Well, at least this means I don't have to mentor anyone!"
Turtlepaw shakily looked up at Chimerahunt when the older half blind tom spoke to him. He listened, still shaking. "You were a good mentor!" He protested, his ears lowered, and voice dropping to a whisper. "And I can't protect anything, I couldn't protect Frondpaw, or myself." He mumbled, looking down at his paws. They were shaking. He wanted to be a warrior. He had to be or else the clan would get rid of him like Riverstar had threatened to. What if he'd just admitted to Chimerahunt he was worthless, and he couldn't accept this simple task? What if something happened to Slippaw because of him. His breathing was quickening and he was hyperventilating all over again, tears started to prick the corners of his eyes as he fought for control of his panicking body and the worsening panic as he couldn't, and he was just showing how weak he was. Finally he dropped to the ground and threw his paws over his eye and scarred socket trying to make himself as small as possible. "I'm so sorry." He whispered to Chimerahunt, knowing his old mentor must be so disappointed in him.
He snorted. Chim doubted he had ever been much of a mentor. He'd given it his best, truly, but he had been distracted and busy and it hadn't been fair to the young tom. He had intended to teach him confidence, but he feared he had only shaken his faith further with his failure. It didn't look like he was helping right now, either; if anything, Turtlepaw looked more panicked than he had a moment ago. Chim sighed, touching his muzzle briefly to the top of his head.
"No, get up," he grunted, seizing Turtlepaw's ear tip in his jaws and jerking up lightly to make his point before he let go. "Maybe you are useless, can't even protect yourself. So lift up your chin and go meet your mentor and learn how. If you're going to learn anything from me, let it be that sitting around feeling sorry for yourself gets you nothing but a leadership."
Turtlepaw winced when Chimerahunt lifted him up. And when the tom said he was useless, he felt a stab in his heart, and he almost dropped back down again. But then he heard the rest of what his mentor said. It took him back to what his mentor had said when they'd first started training. Chimerahunt had told him he would crash into things and Turtlepaw had. A lot. But though at first he'd been distressed, and it had made him more hesitant at first, his mentor had just... normalized it in a way. Turtlepaw had crashed into things despite his care, but over time he had gotten better. Could he get better at this too?
He could at least do Chimerahunt proud and try. Like he had when he'd tried to avoid crashing into things, and then accepted his fate. Though he didn't feel certain he could do any of this at all (and now he was also worried about his failures doing Slippaw in possibly if he messed up), he could at least try to do his old mentor proud.
So though he didn't feel it at all, he lifted his chin, struggling to prepare himself to take the steps to meet his new mentor. His legs still a bit shaky.
Gardeniastar gazed towards Turtlepaw. She’d taken an interest in this cat, and planned to speak to Chimerahunt about him. Perhaps... What if I have made a mistake? I should have kept his mentor as Chimerahunt... oh dear. Doubts planted one the leader’s head, and she found it difficult to hold her own against so many questioning her. Finally, she lifted her head, and slipped back into her den.
