Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Sootstep had been recovering in the medicine cat's den when Basilstar died. A fox attack had left him with an infected wound and he'd barely been conscious for days. Two days had passed since he'd been given tentative permission to explore outside the camp, and he could not have been more glad to stretch his legs again, even if his injured side limited his activity. He'd heard about the new leader and the new deputy, both promoted while he was still in recovery, and he was surprised that such a young cat was in charge. Sootstep himself had been a warrior for less than a moon and a half and he couldn't imagine being leader anytime soon— or ever, really.
The dark gray tom carefully maneuvered through the camp, heading for the medicine cat's den with precious moss cargo held in his jaws. He wanted to help replace the nest he'd been staying in so it would be ready for the next injured cat..... mostly because he was getting restless staying in the camp. He was allowed to hunt for short periods of time, but warned not to push it too much, and he wasn't on patrols at all. After a moon of constant patrolling Sootstep found himself lonely and restless stuck in the camp all day.
“Sootstep.” A voice called, bright eyes gazing at the feline. It was the leader, her orange furs seeming to glow in the sunlight, much like flames. She seemed to be attempting to get the cat’s attention.
Sootstep barely glanced up to see her at the call. He acknowledged her with a half nod and continued his progress, ducking into the medicine cat’s den and heading to his old nest, where he carefully set down the pile of moss. There would be time to arrange it later; for now, he turned and slipped back out of the den, then strolled toward her.
Her ear perked slightly at her old name. Had he called her by her warrior name out of habit? Or was he one of the cats who almost seemed to refuse to acknowledge her as leader? Her eyes changed slightly, and she struggled for a moment on how to react next. Finally, she spoke,”Gardeniastar now.” A smile was along her lips, and her eyes shone brightly as she gently corrected the tom.
He had a way of speaking that made everything sound minor, like he wasn't concerned about his mistake or apologetic for it, and he'd gotten into trouble for that before. It had caused problems with the other warriors more than once, especially Dawnmemories, though they were always at each other's throats anyway. "Did you want me to go out on patrol?" he checked, a little more hopeful. He was so tired of being stuck in camp recovering.
“I’ve spoken to Graythorn, and he seems to think it would be fine for us to take a short walk outside of camp. No hunting though, at least, not today. Would you like to go out on a walk with me?” Though she was almost sure he would say yes. He seemed rather hopeful when he had asked his question. She knew it wasn’t exactly what he was wanting, but it was close enough, right?
He was surprised by the offer, but he wasn't about to turn it down. Sootstep got along with the others well enough now that he had grown up, but he wasn't particularly close with any cat. He didn't really have cats he could just go for a walk with. "Uh, sure," he responded, dipping his head to her. "Thanks."
“Wonderful. I’ll let you get something to eat before we go. See you soon.” With that the feline waved her tail and went off towards another warrior. She was far enough away that he wouldn’t be able to make out what she was saying, but it seemed as if she were telling the cat to join a patrol later.
Sootstep might have gone with her anyway if his stomach hadn't chosen that moment to rumble low and loud. Maybe he was a little hungry. The dark gray tom picked through the fresh-kill pile, eyeing a plump hare enviously before he settled on a lapwing and carried it away. There was no way he could finish the hare on his own, but the bird was easy enough to eat. He plucked the feathers carefully so he could add them to the new nest he was building in the medicine cat's den and set them aside.
When he was finished the warrior rose and set out to find Gardeniastar again.
This time the leader was talking to the deputy. Their heads were close together as they murmured softly to one another. Upon seeing the warrior approach, she dismissed Arsenicedge and rose to her paws. She met the tom half way and gave a swish of her tail. “Ready then?”
Sootstep narrowed his eyes, regarding the deputy warily. Gardeniastar at least he knew from growing up in the clan, but he has never met this loner before he was deputy. He'd still been in recovery when Arsenicedge joined, and he didn't quite trust him. "Ready," he responded with a slight dip of his head. "Everything okay with you two?"
“Oh yes, of course.” She answered softly as she simply dismissed any suspicions he had about anything. She began walking and seemed to have a bright air to her. Clearly, nothing was bothering her. At least, not noticeably.
