Frostfire was getting old, he could feel it now. The realization was not a happy one. Where had the time gone? So many moons, so many leaders, so much loss; and for what? He was going to get old, retire, and one day die. And not even in battle! Frostfire had always assumed he'd go out in battle with eyes blazing and claws sharp. He would give his life for WinterClan and be remembered as a loyal hero. Not an elderly tom with a sordid past.
The dawn broke just as he succumbed to memories, his mind flooding with his lost loves and his disloyal actions. Frostfire had taken two mates in his life, both of which were outside the clan, and WinterClan knew it. How could he hope to redeem himself now? He was too old. It was too late. The thought ripped a despairing sigh from him and he hunched his shoulders against the chill of shame he felt now.
He did love his clan, desperately so, and was not ready to feel this ache in his bones.
A diluted grey and orange warrior emerged from the Warriors' den. She shook out her pelt sending any debris flying from her pelt. Hawthorncrown had been the Marquess for 3 leaders until Leatherstar had returned and kicked her and her fellow Marquesses out of their positions. The molly felt awkward without her position and hadn't been a full warrior in several seasons. She was thankful the hot weather had subsided and given away to the cold chilly wind that came more frequently now. She noticed the Prison Guard Frostfire was by himself. She hadn't spoken to the tom, but knew of him. She slowly approached him with careful pawsteps.

Frostfire's ears flicked up and he turned, spotting a she-cat approaching him. Who was she again? A former Marquess, he remembered. But her names completely escaped him. Panic slithered into his heart, why couldn't he remember her name? He's spent his entire life with these cats. Was it old age? Would he forget more cats? Trying to disguise his inner panic, Frostfire raised his tail in greeting. If nothing else, it would be nice to have a distraction. With relief, he remembered the name 'Hawthorncrown', hopefully that proved to truly be her name.
