Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He forced himself to focus on the prey scents instead of listening to her paws as she walked away. There was a mouse that had passed by recently but the scent was growing a little stale and he had no desire to track it halfway across the territory. The call of a warbler caught his attention and he watched it flutter through the air, circle and dive between the trees not too far from here. Sootstep trotted after it, sliding quietly through the brush and hunting it down.
As he lunged forward and leaped at it his side twinged and his responding jerk ruined his aim, but he'd been quick and quiet enough the bird didn't have enough time to escape to the skies, and his next strike brought it down. Sootstep stood over it panting, shaking his head angrily at his near failure.

She followed silently, slipping between trees and trying very hard to think invisible thoughts. It was like hunting, she thought, except her prey was Sootstep. Each paw step was carefully thought and well places, avoiding all twigs and brittle leave. She was actually beginning to feel proud of herself, until she sent a vole scurrying from its hiding place. Dawnmemories knew she could have caught it if she'd been paying even the slightest bit of attention so, with a hiss of frustration, she pelted after it. How silly she must look as she darted past her clanmate with a vole bolting along ahead of her. But victory was her's in the end as she managed to grab it before it escaped into the gnarled roots of a tree. Tail flicking with relief that she'd correct her misstep, she padded back to Sootstep. Only to notice he was panting rather hard.
Concern leaked into her anger and frustration and she dropped her catch, hurrying to his side, "are you alright?"
"I'm fine," he muttered, shooting her a hard look. He clenched his jaw, then let it go with a sigh and shook his head. "Sorry," he murmured, softer, immediately feeling terrible for snapping at her. She was being genuinely nice for once, he didn't want to ruin it. "I wasn't thinking. I am fine, I just didn't realizing hunting was going to hard again until this heals. It was bad enough learning the first time around. At least you got some too."
Sootstep had a difficult start as an apprentice. He'd been more ornery than ever, because in those first few moons he had discovered how much of an impediment his partially-blind left eye could be, and it frustrated him to no end that he didn't pick up the skills as quickly as the others. Through hard work he'd learned to cope, but he hated feeling like his side was putting him at a disadvantage again.

"You could have died," she pointed out, sitting across from him. There was no pity in her voice, but there was a very real sincerity in her voice as she went on, "you went up against three very large foxes, of course you'd need time to recover. I got lucky and you still made a neater catch than I managed to, I think we are both just out of sorts."
As friendly as her voice was, she was trying very hard to guard against her emotions. Sootstep did this. Like under the monster, when they cuddled and the next day he acted like a complete badger about it. Dawnmemories desperately wanted to think that this was going to be their relationship moving forward but she also knew it wouldn't be so. However, she wasn't going to let him sulk. Of course she had always known about his eye but had never felt the need to treat him differently because of it, it was just a part of Sootstep.
always gonna italicize "cuddle" xD dawnmemories is way too dramatic in her own head
Sootstep stared at his paws. In the moment, he hadn't even thought about dying, everything had happened so fast and he'd been too worried after her. He knew she was right, though. If that fox had clung onto him a little bit longer the damage would have been so much worse, or if they'd been stuck beneath that monster any longer he might not have the energy left to drag himself back to camp. His blue gaze flicked upward, catching on her fur and remembering how soft it had been, until his roaming eyes met hers.
We could have died there.
And then, stupidly, the warrior felt the beginning of a grin tugging at his lips, and he couldn't help laughing. It was the absolute worst time for an outburst, but he couldn't help it, the tension was getting to him and he was nervous. "Sorry, sorry, I— can you imagine what everyone would have thought if we died beneath that monster? If they found us like that?"

Dawnmemories was shocked by his laughing and couldn't really tell if she should be offended or not. "Like what? Sleeping?" She wasn't going to say it and she kept her voice very carefully clueless as she watched him, their eyes locked onto each other. Dawnmemories liked his laugh and didn't often get to hear it. Should she laugh too? About what? Almost dying and then being snubbed by Sootstep? The warrior refused to get emotional though and instead enjoyed the sound of his laughter and the grin on his face, committing it to memory in case she never got to see it or hear it again.
His laughter died on his lips as he choked. Sootstep ducked his head to hide his face as he grew hot with embarrassment under his fur. Of course she hadn't thought any of it, why would she? They'd just been hiding under a monster, touching only because of the cramped space, not snuggling or anything even remotely like that.
"Well, you and I know what really happened there, but.... nobody else would. It would look pretty suspicious," he tried lamely.

"Suspicious?" Dawnmemories repeated, tail flicking, "you mean because you and I cuddled?" There you go. They may as well talk this out. "What really happened? Because I thought we cuddled." Or she wanted to think that. It wasn't some fear-induced fit of theirs, was it? Why did even matter to her? They weren't even friends! Frustrated at herself she stood and padded away a few steps, scooping up her vole and padding a few paces back towards camp without waiting for him to reply.
Sootstep closed his eyes. Why was it so hard to just admit yet? "Yes," he mumbled. His eyes flashed open as he heard her leaving and he leaped to his paws as well. "Yeah, okay?" he growled louder, "we cuddled. You got me." He stalked after her, his prey forgotten, intent on keeping her here. If she wanted to talk about this then fine, they would talk. "You have a problem with that, dear?"

Dawnmemories froze despite telling herself to keep walking and spat the vole back out, turning with a dangerous slowness. "Honey," she practically hissed, "I think you are the one with the problem with it. I had no problem and you had to go and ruin the moment!" Why had he been so stubborn about admitted. "I mean, great StarClan it's not like we're having kits! Why do you have to be so weird about it? About me?" She didn't like this part of Sootstep, usually when he called her dear it was with a biting sarcasm.

"I ruined the moment?" Sootstep stopped and stared at her, his brow furrowing. What was she talking about? He'd been practically buried in her fur when he woke up. "Is this because I feel asleep? I was tired, Dawnmemories! I'm sorry I was too busy bleeding to death to stay up with you, but you were warm, and I feel asleep. We didn't die, so no harm done, right?" He was stung that she dared blame him for any of this when he didn't think it even mattered to her. "But you're right, we're not having kits, so why is it such a big deal?"

"No you dumb fuzzball! It's because you were so... so cold when we woke up! I was comfortable, happy. And you made it weird. You ALWAYS makes it weird," she replied, voice rising with each word. "Sootstep, I thought one of us was going to be caught, we were scared, and tired and hurt so when I woke up and you were distant all over again, what was I supposed to do? Just be quiet about it, Sootstep? Is that what you want? I meek little follower that let's you be as moody as you please?!" all the deadly cuddling
are they really fighting over who was cuddling who
"I wasn't trying to be cold! I know you were trying to help, and I'm sorry if I didn't appreciate it, I just..." His gaze dropped to his paws again and he looked defeated. "Your paws hurt when you were trying to put cobwebs on the wound, and you were so... I'm sorry, I just panicked," he mumbled. How could he explain how it felt to have her sitting so close to him when he knew she normally couldn't bear to be so close to him? To know what it was like to cuddle with her when it would never happen again? When she got so close to treat his wounds he just couldn't handle it.

haha yes and i'm living for it
"I'm a warrior," she reminded him, refusing to acknowledge her heart's happy skip. "I can handle pain. And it was nothing compared to yours. I really was worried you would die." Dawnmemories voice shook remembering how horrible he'd looked after the fight. "And I was so sorry I'd let us fall asleep without treating you. I felt like I failed you, and you were mad at me for it." Bravely, she stepped forward until they were only a few mouselengths apart, "but I was not sorry for cuddling." It was as honest as she'd probably ever let herself be to him. It felt like admitting a terrible weakness and she almost immediately felt stupid. Her ears, one still covered in cobweb, flattened and she took a sudden interest in looking at her paws.
I was really worried you'd die. She said that before, but this time it sunk in more, and he didn't know what to say. His chest warmed at the thought, just a little, even though it made perfect sense she'd be worried about her clanmate. They weren't friends, but they didn't hate each other, right? But then... but then she went on, and all of it made him hurt, a low intense burn in his gut, and he felt so suddenly guilty he had to close his eyes and take a deep breath to choke it down.
He didn't open his eyes when she came close, but he knew she was there; could feel her breath and his whiskers trembled at her closeness. She was right there, overwhelming his senses, warm and soft and vulnerable, and he leaned forward slightly as she moved to brace his forehead against hers... only for her to duck her head and look at her paws, shifting out of his reach. He froze, set back slightly on his heels, tried to play it off like his hear wasn't pounding, like he hadn't thought she was reaching out to him. Sootstep let out a little breath, opened his eyes.
"I'm not either," he whispered. "You're really comfortable."

ultimate pickup line: you're really comfortable also "his whiskers trembled"
Dawnmemories looked up at that, their eyes meeting, and she managed a purr of amusement, "thanks, you're not so bad yourself. I probably could have slept there all night, even it was under a monster." She should move away from him now, happy to have resolved their latest disagreement, but she lingered instead. She'd missed him reaching towards her but she was currently fighting the impulse to do that same thing to him. Where did this put them? Friends at the very least? Hopefully.
Did she want anything more? Quickly, she stopped herself from exploring the answer to that. Dawnmemories did not feel that way about Sootstep.

Sootstep smiled, his head tilting slightly. For a moment, he wished they had an excuse to stay under that monster again. These last few nights his nest in the medicine cat's den had been so cold and uncomfortable, he just couldn't quite get it right. He told himself it was just the moss they used, but with her right in front of him, how could he really believe that? He didn't want to think about how far apart their nests were in the warrior's den. How this was his last chance to be close to her. He nearly reached for her again, but instead he slowly turned away, shaking his head like it might change his mind.
"Besides, you couldn't have done anything to help me before I slept. The foxes were still there," he reminded her instead, not looking her way. "Even if you could escape, the smart thing would've been to go back to camp and get yourself looked after. Not bring me cobwebs."

"I would never have left you there alone," she replied with a horrified expression, "that never once crossed my mind." That simply hadn't been an option for her, "it was bad enough being seperate by the foxes on the way to the thunderpath, I was afraid that was the last glimpse I'd ever have of you. Especially when I got stuck in that bush." Dawnmemories shuddered involuntarily, trying to block out the terror she'd felt then, thrashing around in the leave with the fox.
He wasn't sure if he was more flattered by her dedication or upset. Sootstep's ears prickled in alarm and he looked back at her. "What bush?" Had she nearly gotten caught by the fox? Suddenly he remembered the bite in her flank-- that hadn't been there when they started running. "It nearly caught you! And you didn't tell me?"

Dawnmemories shrugged, "when was I going to tell you? We didn't exactly chat after we were safe." With a small sigh she explained, "I stumbled and ran into a bramble bush, my fur got tangled really badly and before I could escape the fox crashed into me and we both got stuck in there. We both were trying to get out but it bit me, that's why my pads and claws were torn up, I scrapped them a lot to get out before the fox."
