Devilhorns had made a rival. Though, he had his dear son to blame for that pesky little problem. Grandsky was a meddling tom who didn't know how to leave his dear old dad alone. Could one blame him though? Devilhorns had made it a point to ignore everyone and continue acting as a warrior until that fateful day. Now, forced into the elders den by his sole surviving child, the old grotesque tom grumbled in his nest. He wasn't old, okay? He..he just looked it, and acted it. Sure his joints ached but any warriors did...right? Okay, he had to admit it, Devilhorns was old.
Briskfang might not have as much to brag about these days, but at least he wasn't an elder that. His family hadn't compelled him to retire yet, so he remained a senior warrior, and it was gratifying to flaunt that in front of Devilhorns sometimes. Even if it was getting rough to keep up his duties, at least he wasn't stuck in camp all the time. Strolling into camp with a lapwing in his maw, he ducked into the elder's den and set it down at Devilhorn's paws. "Here you go, old man. Wouldn't want you starving in here."
He turned to leave, grinning to himself, but was unable to stop a wince as he turned too quickly and his neck and shoulder protested the strain.

Recently Eeltail had been given a denmate, which had annoyed him greatly. He'd thought for moons that he wanted a denmate but as soon as Devilhorns moved in her found himself more cross than usual. Today was no different. He woke up with a scowl on his old face, groomed himself with a deep frown, ate his breakfast with a glare, and was now laying in a patch of sun and staring at Devilhorns with a deeply disapproving look on his face. Devilhorns, despite finding himself as an elder, was not the same age as Eeltail and only seemed to remind Eeltail that he had three paws in StarClan and one on a patch of ice.
"Thanks, but I'm fully capable to catch my own prey. You're welcome to give it to my neighbor here." He pointed his tail at the other elder in the den, pushing the prey some with his paw. Catching the wince on his rival, the tom grinned a wicked gruesome thing. "Oh? Are you feeling your age, old timer?" Devilhorns turned his gaze towards Eeltail, "looks as though he'll be joining us soon. Mind if he sleeps on the other side of you? I could stand looking at him all the time."

Eeltail lashed his long tail, "I may be old, but I'll out live you and this other fleapelt," he replied crossly. A third cat in the den?! Eeltail huffed, "why do I get stuck between you both? You must know him better, to lay beside him." He was old but he wasn't going to be given the worst deal. He liked his space and wasn't about to be stuck between two cat's with rotten breath.
Briskfang snorted. "I've got some fight left in me yet. I'll stay in the warriors den for a few more moons until you both croak. Besides," he added with a pointed look at Devilhorns, "I'm a much better denmate than he is. Some day you won't have me around to bring you prey, and what then? You think Grandsky is going to take time out of his day to visit with you?"
"I don't expect my son to make time for me. Besides, he has no obligation to care for me! Let the young live their lives without worrying about us. The least we can do as old men." That been something that'd been eating at him lately, and part of the reason he'd not wanted to become an elder. Devilhorns knew how loyal his son was, and knew that the younger tom would bend over backward for him if he thought his dad needed any kind of help. Grandsky had spent over a week trying to convince him he was old! The stubbornness of that boy! But maybe with him here, Grandsky would focus more on that pretty she-cat he'd begun to fancy.

Eeltail scoffed, "those young cats are spoiled brats thanks to cats like you!" The mangy gray cat was often easy to infuriate, and this conversation was no different, "they should be grateful to be caring for elders that protected their clan so they could be born and raised safely!" What thistle-headed old cats he was stuck with, it wouldn't have been like this back in the old days. "Why when I was coming up my mentor made sure I showed my appreciation and even as a warrior I knew how to care for my elders."
*sprinkles in all the stereotypical old man sayings I can*
"I raised my daughter and my apprentice to treat their elders with the proper respect," Briskfang agreed, "and I didn't let them get too soft. See what happened when the clan got to soft? We got defeated by the Pride of all things!" Briskfang shook his head at the memory. It had been a terrible couple of moons before Phoenixstar took over. He was glad she had been there to help them, even if she had left them so soon, and he liked Silverstar as well.
pretends his primrosepaw & primrosekit aren't inactive/dead
"And you think I did?" Fury raced through him. Devilhorsn had learned to take beating laying down, to listen to the harsh words and let them roll, but he'd never let anyone say anything bad about his kits! They were the one thing he's ever had pride in and he'd raised them all by himself into incredible warriors. Sadly, Grandsky was the only one left. The tom rose from his nest, anger clear in every way, rippling through his fur and evident in his eyes. "You know nothing of respect! To dare call my son soft! How dare you! Neither of you have any idea what we've been through, what he's been through!" The old, grotesque tom hurried out of the den in a fury. He couldn't stay here, not right now.

Eeltail cackled as Devilhorns stormed out, "bit of a softy himself, eh?" Still, the old gray tom hauled himself from his nest and followed the angry tom. He wasn't sure why he followed or why he cared. Eeltail was older than Devilhorns, they hadn't spent any significant chunks of time together, but he was still aware that this was a clanmate. So was he trying to apologize? Absolutely not. Eeltail never apologized to anyone. As he padded unsteadily out into camp he looked around for the other cat, still unsure of his motive.
Devilhorns had made it out of camp and some distance into the territory. The old tom was familiar enough with the land to not get lost, per his previous adventure with Briskfang that end oh so well. Taking a seat on an old, worn down stump, dark fur a mess of fluffy, the elder looked out at the land and tried to calm down. Anger would get him no where, it hadn't up to this point. But at the same time, he wanted them to understand. He knew they wouldn't though, why would they?
Briskfang rolled his eyes. "He's so touchy," he muttered as he followed the elders out of the den. "Did I say Grandsky's name? I actually like him, unlike his father," he huffed. He stalked after Eeltail, though he wasn't convinced he wanted to find Devilhorns again.

Eeltail followed his clanmate but didn't wait for Briskfang, feeling cross at the very idea of following an old bad of bones into the territory because he was so touchy that one small comment had sent him running out into the territory. Tail lashing and a growl deep in his throat, he followed his denmates scent trail until he saw him up ahead. He still didn't understand this temper tantrum but he didn't want to live with a tom he'd offended so thoroughly. So what now? Suddenly uncomfortable, Eeltail decided to wait for Briskfang after all.
Devilhorns had been facing a lot lately, and that one small comment had pushed him over the edge. The old man was only getting older. Which only meant more troubles for him. Arthritis had set in a while back, but so had something else. Grandsky didn't know. StarClan above, Devilhorns hadn't even told him about the arthritis and wouldn't have if the medicine cat hadn't asked his son how his condition was doing. But this...this was so much worse.
The tom looked up as he saw Eeltail wait ahead of him and slowly drew even with him, twitching one ragged ear in acknowledgement. "Chose to wait for me after all, huh?" he grunted. "Wise choice. I've been fighting badgers grumpier than him all my life." The slanted scar splitting his face from below his eye and across his lip was a testament to that. "Course, the badgers are reasonable. Just give 'em a hit or two and they get the idea. Think if we hit Devilhorns hard enough he'll grow a brain?"
He didn't care if his voice was loud enough to carry to the elder in question.

Eeltail snorted, genuinely amused, "I doubt it. If he ain't go a brain now, he'll die without one." Eeltail truly didn't mind Devilhorns, but that didn't mean he was going to be friendly. Eeltail was never friendly as a rule. However, he couldn't stop the little bit of guilt stirring in him, "why is he so touchy anyway? I thought a warrior would have a thicker skin than that..." Maybe they had missed something about the other elder.
(So sorry I got busy with school and couldn't find time to get on, even for a few minutes.)
Devilhorns could hear them approaching, they'd be on him soon but he couldn't bring himself to care. The tom was old, far outliving his time. Especially where his family was concerned. Maybe..maybe he should tell someone. See how they took it before telling Grandsky. His rival had always been loyal, even if they butted heads and acted as though they hated the other. Could he trust Eeltail though? He barely knew the other elder, who knows if he'd go spilling the beans to Grandsky before he was ready.

[[ same though ]]
Eeltail spotted the blurry form of Devilhorns ahead and called out, "hey! You walked away suddenly, kid," Eeltail grumbled with no heat behind his words. Devilhorns was younger than Eeltail, and still a kid to the ancient tom, despite him being the newest elder. "Can't you take a joke?"
Devilhorns ignored the other tom, barely sparing him a glance over his shoulder. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea to tell them. But..he had to tell someone...right?
