Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Before she could answer his first question about the lapwing, he had asked her what kind of prey was her favorite. She wasn't sure which prey she liked best. She always just ate what she could find. However, if she had to choose, she supposed she would choose squirrel. It always carried the flavor of the forest. "I like squirrels" she said finally with a smile she hadn't used in a long while.
"A squirrel, then. I'll find you the biggest fox squirrel in the forest and that can be your feast. At least then you'll have one good meal as deputy, hmm?" Raijin smiled at her, warm and secretive, already making plans when they'd barely even begun here. He led her down a fork to their right after a brief moment, his whiskers twitching as he felt the air current around them.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" She asked at last, surprised by such hospitality. She had heard of the Regime being noble to one another but cruel to outsiders. Yet, the Commander was being very hospitable. She flinched in surprise as the air current changed and brushed her whiskers.
Raijin tilted his head slightly, surprised by the question, though it was reasonable enough. The Regime was largely hostile to outsiders and many of his cats would not take so kindly to seeing him feed a warrior instead of chasing her off. "We've had a lot of cats come down here because of the floods," he explained after a moment. "I suppose I've grown tired of chasing them off without asking questions. You can only defend your territory for so long before admitting not every intruder is a threat."
"I suppose that is true. I am no threat to you as long as we remain acquaintances but I am also not a rescue...well, not exactly." She chuckled, referring to her falling into the tunnels. "Still, I suppose I should thank you. Not many cats I come across treat me with much respect."
"That is nothing to thank me for," he reassured her. "The Regime may be harsh, but all these cats know is respect. You fell into the right tunnels, it had nothing to do with me." He grinned. "I don't mean to insult your clan, I'm sure they're lovely cats... but the ones I've met haven't been so respectful to trespassers. I can't tell you how many cats have tried to skin me!"
She let out a small laugh. "Yeah, the clan cats can be quite territorial at times. I suppose I don't blame them, though. They have been through a lot. Especially Nightclan. They had the earth quake hit their land the hardest, a bunch of their clanmates had fallen ill and turned on each other, and their former leader, Burningstar, just left them without a leader when she went into labor and had to stay in Sunclan. Larkwing was next to take charge but...he didn't come back from the trip he and BUrningstar went on." She told him, trying not to show the little guilt she had for being responsible for Larkwing's disappearance. "But Soaringbird became leader of Nightclan and has made me her deputy." She lifted her chin slightly, feeling proud to have been chosen even though she had hoped that with Larkwing out of the picture, she would have been made leader. She supposed that deputy was close enough. Now, she just had to stage a little accident for Soaringstar and she would have what she had always dreamed of - becoming leader so she can rain havoc on Moonclan for revenge.
Raijin listened, shaking his head sympathetically as he listened to the recounted events. It was amazing, sometimes, how much had happened to these clans. He'd lived so long on the outsides he often missed out on the news. The League and the Regime were both on the outsides, and when he was a rogue he was even more an outcast, and the news rarely reached him. Even rogues had to deal with earthquakes, but the damage then was always minor and forgettable; if your den collapsed, you'd just find a new one and move on. It wasn't like that for clans.
"That's quite the story," he mused as she finished. "I can't imagine. Your clan must be truly grateful for you stepping up to look after them in these troubling times."
She chuckled, "yeah...I suppose so..." Suddenly, she didn't feel so high and mighty. She had played dirty to get to where she is now. She was amazed by how noble the Regime was, especially Raijin. He was just so...perfect.
His intense blues held her a moment longer before he turned back to the path ahead of them, leading her through another tunnel change until the tunnel widened into Headquarters. The cavern was large and tunnels split off in many directions leading from the heart to the rest of the Regime. A few cats were weaving about the tunnels, hard at work, and there were few lounging about this time of day. In the center of the cavern was a massive amethyst crystal surrounded by two small pools of water, dark and smooth as glass without the light reflecting above.
"Welcome to my home," Raijin told her, a fond smile on his lips at the sight. "We'll just grab something to eat and find somewhere quieter to sit." He led her along toward the base of the pools where the prey pile was located. It was still shallow; most scouts hadn't returned yet.
Her jaw dropped at the site of the cavern and slowed her pace to take in the scenery. "Wow" she said breathlessly. "I can see why you all live down here, now!" She followed him around the pools, her eyes locked on the crystal. "We have something like that in our camp."
Raijin purred, watching her take it in. It was impressive, he'd been just as dazzled the first time he saw the massive crystal. "Do you? I thought we were the only ones." His whiskers twitched. "Maybe I'll pay a visit to your camp sometime and take a look."
"We have many crystals in our denote cave" Flamingsoul explained. She turned a smile onto Raijin when he mentioned coming to Nightclan for a visit. "Then that will be the first thing I do as leader. We shall have a feast and the Regime will be invited.'
Raijin tilted his head slightly, curious about these crystals. The Regime had them in no short supply, but he'd found each little gem and crystal was vastly different, even in the depths of the Outlands. And they were all beautiful. Raijin smiled appreciatively as he met her gaze, and bowed his head slightly. "I would be honored to attend. I'll keep my cats on their best behavior," he promised. It might be a long time before she was ever leader, but he didn't mind the wait. He wasn't going anywhere either.
She chuckled and returned a bow. "So, what does the commander do, anyway? Is it kind of like a deputy?" She asked, creating small talk, trying to avoid all the curious gazes from the Regime cats.
"Almost. It's more like your leader, really," he replied mildly. "My Mercenary Superior -- she's like my deputy -- would tell you I don't do much at all. I have the final say in all decisions and all that. I'm supposed to be trained in healing and raising tykes as well as hunting and fighting, but I've been a bit... slow, picking up that training." Finally digging through the prey pile, he found several suitable options and offered them to her. "Do you want this lapwing or shrew?"
"The lapwing looks appetizing" she purred, her mouth watering. "So your the leader, huh? That's pretty big but that's a lot of responsibility for a leader." She was grateful that she didn't have that much responsibility even when she becomes leader.
Rajin beamed approvingly; he loved lapwings. He picked it up and led her away from the center of Headquarters to a quieter corner of a wide tunnel leading to his den. He didn't take her as far as his home, just sat down in the secluded area of the tunnel and faced her, nudging the prey her way. "It is. I still don't know why Commanders Mars picked me to succeed him," he admitted, "but I'm trying to be a worthy choice."
She took a small, polite bite out of the lapwing and swallowed, the flavor of the forest melting in her mouth. "Well, I think he made a good choice" she smiled awkwardly, unsure if that compliment was a little too flirty.
Raijin chuckled lightly. "I'm glad you think so. I'm afraid my cats aren't as approving, though.... not that I can blame them. Mars left big pawsteps that I can't fill."
