Chocolatekit had built a little ring out of small stones she'd collected from around the camp, carefully laying them out so they made a complete circle. Once she was satisfied with that she'd begun hunting down bugs. Now she had a beetle, a ladybug, and one snail that was her favorite. Chocolatekit watched them, pawing some softly back down as they scaled the stones, and tried to decide on their names.
Ever since she'd accidentally told one of the other kit's secrets to the others she'd spent a lot of time by herself, not everyone had forgiven her yet. At first it had made Chocolatekit quite sad but now she sort of liked the time she got to spend exploring on her own without every cat telling her what to do.
A small black she-cat watched the kitten's methodical observation and collection of the creatures that she had found. It was odd, observing someone who was also observing something, but the black she-cat hadn't been convinced that she should interrupt. This was part of the anxiety that intruded in the life of little Monarchpaw, the she-cat who was too sick to play with the apprentices but too old to play with the kittens. She never really fit in.
After a moment of watching, the she-cat, who was not much bigger and actually much skinnier than Chocolatekit, made her way over to the kitten. Her footsteps were slow, as not to aggrevate her body into a fit of coughing. She approached the kitten cautiously, as not to startle her. "That's quite a collection you have there," she meowed, her voice small and raspy.

Chocolatekit looked up, ears flattened against her fur in a way that suggested she expected some sort of scathing remark about her current activity. She may be young but something told her cats didn't often collect bugs. Cats were hunters, meant to kill their prey, not study it. But after a heartbeat Chocolatekit relaxed, drinking in the sight of the other cat; Chocolatekit was young and still learning the names and faces of her many clanmates, but she recognized Monarchpaw as the sickly apprentice that she'd observed from a distance on one of her first adventures through camp.
"Thanks," Chocolatekit replied, straightening up proudly and pawing the ladybug back onto the little leaf bed she'd made. "You don't look as sick as you did when I first saw you," she continued, almost immediately wanting to claw her own fur out for the foolish statement.
