Hazelpaw laid on the ground, his sides rising weakly. He could feel his body ache from the myriad of gouges and wounds across his flank and his head felt full of cobwebs. It had been foolish for him to come out here – he’d been jumped as soon as he realized- Clenching his eyes shut, he let out a strangled sigh, more frustrated at himself than anything else. They had outnumbered him, five to one, though he had doubted he could’ve taken one. Brutes, the lot of them! But now he knew and wasn’t that what he had wanted?
His eyes focused on a squashed berry on the ground, reds and blues mixing together. He had come across them in this large clearing, while they were creating the berry, StarClan, he’d been foolish. How had he thought that this had been his answer to everything? Hazelpaw finally pushed himself to his paws, biting back a growl of pain as his wounds reopened. He had to do something and not just sit around like a bump on a log. Sucking in a deep breath, he limped over to the side of clearing, growling out expletives with every step.
He wasn’t sure what he would find over there and after a while, he gave up, after only finding a few measly cobwebs. Hazelpaw was about to start dressing his wounds, when a rustle made him pause. The cobweb dropped to the ground, as he whirled around, calling out, “Who’s there?”

Since her birth, Fallenecho had known herself as the cat who cheated death, the one who should've died but somehow had life breathed into her just as she was losing her life. Due to this, Fallenecho had an extreme fear of death and dying, therefore always staying on the safer side of life-- as much as she could at least. The dilute calico had decided to go down the route of Garden Keeper rather than warrior. It suited her anyways. Fallenecho was hardly bigger than an apprentice, as though her growth had been stunted to never grow to her full size.
She'd been patrolling her usual fields of herbs and plants, checking on them to see which ones might be ripe enough to gather, which ones should be left alone, and which ones had unfortunately died. She took inventory in her mind, prepared to tell the medicine cats what she knew. However, today she'd gone down a different path, deciding to venture a little longer than normal to take her mind of off her life for a bit, to be in tune with the nature that surrounded her.
As she did this, she heard a sound not too far away, the scent of cats, and one rather familiar. Was that... Hazelpaw? Fallenecho didn't know him well, but she'd obviously seen him from time to time. Confused, Fallenecho pushed through the bushes and into the clearing where the apprentice had begun to take care of his wounds. She froze for a moment, green eyes laced with confusion and concern. "What in the world happened, are you okay?" her voice was soft and gentle, though the concern showed through.
Quite frankly, Hazelpaw wasn’t sure if he was relieved or a bit annoyed to see that it was Fallenecho. “Oh, I thought you were- Never mind,” he broke off, shaking his head, his muscles relaxing. “I was just attacked – bunch of fleabrained loners is all.” His voice was a grumble, embarrassment setting his defenses up. “Listen, you wouldn’t happen to have any cobwebs on you, would you?” He was relieved, he decided, to see the Garden Keeper; they had turned out to be quite useful, especially during this influx of new cats fleeing their home’s devastation. He could trust Fallenecho to not say anything to anyone – she seemed like the reliable sort.
Trying to force his anxious thoughts away, he gave her a purr and tipped his head to the side with a smile. “Really, I’m fine. I was just surprised, that’s all. Thankfully they didn’t do much harm. If you don’t have some cobwebs on you, you could stick around while I cared for myself – if that would make you feel better, of course.” Truth be told, Hazelpaw was a bit nervous that the group would come back again to finish the job. Even if Fallenecho wasn’t a fighter – Hazelpaw had heard rumors of her apparent apprehension to the more dangerous lifestyle of a Warrior – at least he would have someone else beside him.

Fallenecho winces at the words "loners". She knew they'd been a problem recently. "I can't believe they attacked you..." The grey she-cat shakes her head, frustration obviously overtaking her emotions for a few moments. "I wonder if they were the same loners that trampled over some of our catmint supply." With leaf-fall coming, Fallenecho knew just how important that catmint would be for the clan. The sight of the new shoots trampled made her heart ache, for she knew that those leaves could have saved lives. Hazelpaw's voice brings her from her thoughts, and she glances back at the apprentice. "I'll stay with you." She gives a reassuring smile and purr, settling down and wrapping her tail around her paws.
Fallenecho had heard of Hazelpaw's pride, and she picked up that the tom might want her around just as much as she wanted the company. "Do you need any help?" she asks, looking around for a few moments. When she seeing the mixture of berry juices, her head tilts in slight confusion. "What happened?" She glances at Hazelpaw once more, green eyes filled with curiosity. "What were you doing out here without anyone?"
A new flare of frustration flickers in Hazelpaw’s chest at the reminder; he hadn’t been there when the destroyed catmint was discovered. StarClan, these loners will be the death of me, he thinks to himself, a new wave of exhaustion washing over him. It’s too much and for a moment, his whole body felt heavier than before.
Though he snaps out of his thoughts at her question and he hesitates. Worry settles in his stomach and his mouth opens for a few seconds, trying to figure out what to say. Before he can think, the words are already out of his mouth, “It was a new berry.” Hazelpaw swallows, feeling his throat clench up in worry, before pressing on. “I had come across this new berry – it looks pretty, doesn’t it? I had heard only rumors floating around about it, I didn’t know if it was true or not. I came across these loners, they had so many berries, you wouldn’t believe it.” The image flickers in his mind and he lets out a shaky sigh.
“A scuffle broke out – apparently they wanted to keep it for themselves.” Leaning in closer to Fallenecho, he breathes out, eyes shining with apprehension, “You see – it’s a panacea. With it, we could save our Clan from anything. But-“ He breaks off and turned his head to the side, claws digging into the ground. “Well, you see what’s happened.”
In truth, the berry is merely a juniper berry covered in different berry juices – the loners had convincingly made it look like a different berry. But it had all been a wild goose chase – Hazelpaw had bought the tale and now look where he was. He looked like an absolute fool now and that’s what hurt the most.

Fallenecho frowns, watching the tired medicine cat. Both cats were so young, and yet they'd already seen too much. The dilute knew that the catmint fiasco had been a very direct hit for the clan's healers-- it would just make their job so much more difficult.
Fallenecho looks at the smashed berries in this dreaded clearing, her fur poofing out in alarm and apprehension, worried the loners would come out as Hazelpaw spoke about them. The queen noses the berries gently, staining her nose purple. "These would have been useful, no matter what they actually are." she murmurs softly, head hanging in sad disbelief. These loners come to their territory, destroying not only their medicine supply, but then attacking one of the ones that could actually heal cats if an illness spread through the camp.
She pads over to Hazelpaw, pressing her nose lightly to his shoulder in what she hoped he would find a comforting manner. "You did what you thought was best for the clan. I'm glad you're not as hurt as you could be." The she-cat then returns back to the mess of the berries. "Do you think we should bury them so they don't rot? Should we try to bring some of the paste back?" Though she knew some herbs and remedies, she didn't know how they were used or what would work for these particular berries.

As Fallenecho pressed her nose into his shoulder, he flinched from the sudden contact, more surprised than annoyed. A light purple stain remained on his shoulder, but he didn’t move to clean it. He had never been a touchy-feely kind of tom, happier to verbally praise someone than nuzzle up to them. She reminded him of Foxwhisper, which dried his throat; both exuded motherly warmth and that worried him.
Clearing his throat, he finally replied, “Yes, l-let’s burry them. If we do, then perhaps we can hide the evidence that the loners were here.” Hazelpaw was speaking aloud, the adrenaline from the attack finally dissipating, leaving his mind foggy. “It won’t do anything good to leave them out like this,” he continued, shakily getting to his paws. “I’m not sure if the paste will even help. I just found out about the panacea – I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up.”
The lies trickled off his tongue, without a second thought or flick of the ear. If he could just bury the berries and make sure that Fallenecho didn’t tell anyone about this, his standing within the Clan would hold – he wouldn’t have to worry about his failings coming to light. Of course, there wasn’t much he could do to make sure that she neither figured it out nor told anyone about this. As he began to dig the hole, the weight on his shoulders doubled, as his stomach sank a bit. But he couldn’t come out and tell her the truth – he just…didn’t trust her enough with this information. He just had to keep his head down and mouth shut.
“I’m sorry to drag you into this,” Hazelpaw said, pausing his digging and giving Fallenecho a rueful smile, “I’m sure you didn’t think you’d be doing this on such a nice day, huh?”

Fallenecho takes a step back, guilty she’d made Hazelpaw flinch. She murmurs a quick “sorry” in her usual shy and quiet manner, deciding to go and take a look at the berries that stained the area. Her nose scrunches up as the strong scent surrounds her, sea green eyes glancing up at Hazelpaw in confusion. Even as a garden keeper, she recognized the smell of these. They definitely weren’t a panacea, they were common everyday berries. But she knew Hazelpaw likely didn’t want to talk about it, but she couldn’t help but feel as through the apprentice was uneducated enough in his calling to not know that these were a common herb.
Fallenecho’s fur was long and easy to spoil, due to her mixed clan blood. The splotches of orange in her fur and the color of her eyes proved her to be apart of SummerClan, the grey and the thickness suggested a mountain clan such as WinterClan. When Fallenecho began to dig a hole for the paste, dirt covered her chest fur and stained her paws dark. But she didn’t mind, Hazelpaw seemed sick with worry. Plus, he’d just been attacked, so it made sense why he’d be so on edge. The feminine noses some of the berries into her hole.
Fallenecho smiles gently, her muzzle stained with the berries, her paws muddy and purple as well. She’d definitely need a bath soon. “I don’t mind, I had finished all I needed to do. I’m glad to have found you alive.” Fallenecho was truthful in what she had to say. She couldn’t imagine what the clan would do without Hazelpaw. They needed him.
As Hazelpaw watched Fallenecho, his stomach dropped at her hesitance. Did she know that he was lying through his teeth? Swallowing, he turned back to the hole, regret clinging to his throat. She seemed so sincere in her words and he was hesitant to mess with that. But he couldn’t do anything now, but hope that everything would smooth back again.
“I’m glad too,” he replied, looking up at her once again, “if you hadn’t appeared, I dunno what I would’ve done.” With a glance over his shoulder, he shivered. The fact that the loners hadn’t come back gave him little reassurance; who knew where they could be or if they were stalking the pair from the tall grass. “I owe you one, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help; your help for my help.” Everything to him was a transaction – he had to make sure that he wasn’t left in her debt, even if she herself didn’t believe that he owed her anything.

With Hazelpaw's glance, Fallenecho shivers. She was well aware that neither knew how to fight besides maybe some self defense, and the last thing she wanted that day was to be attacked. However, she also knew that if the loners were around, they shouldn't head to camp because they would be putting the clan in danger. These thoughts rush Fallenecho's actions of pushing berries into holes and burying them, not wanting to be anywhere near here.
"for now, let's think about taking a long route home." Fallenecho eyes the sky. The sun shone straight above them, so it wouldn't sleep anytime soon. They had enough time to get home before dark, which would be a much more dangerous time.
