Resigned to the dawn patrol with Hickorysplendor, he had gone to bed earlier to usual. It hadn't helped. As the light around them gradually paled as the sun prepared to rise, the bronzed tom shifted in his nest, disgruntled by the internal alarm reminding him to get up and get ready. He raised a paw to place over his muzzle, pulling down to stifle the great yawn that escaped him, and shifted further onto his back. His head tipped back so his throat was exposed and his chin was parallel to the ground, and snuggled comfortably into the moss. He was tempted to remain there just a bit longer, content, but he knew if he did he wouldn't wake up. So, with a regretful grunt, he rolled to his paws and stumbled to the light.
More than half asleep, bronze fur in complete disarray, bleary eyes searching for his partner, Ragingspire was ready to go.
here is never hesitation to admit that dawn patrols were one of Hickorysplendor's favorite responsibilities as a Warrior and not for what many would suspect. There was no righteous and wholesome reason such as the honorable task of protecting the livelihood of her clan oh no. The she-cat knew that at the falling of the sun and the rising, the drops of light that are milked from the sky at the beginning and the end of the day framed her illustrious and silky pelt which she took great care to maintain.
It had been some time already that the she-cat had been up, grooming her self in preparation for the patrol just tail lengths away from the warrior den. Her soft pink tongue glazed the final part of one of her forelegs, flattening the raised edges with her warm saliva. With a final, content filled sigh, the she-cat took a loving look at her work, rising to her paws to give one quick examination. Her long and feather tail cut through the air with a gentle "woosh" and with it bringing a large, pride filled grin to the she-cat. Her vibrant and lively greenish eyes, took in her tail lovingly on to note a golden brown figure just a couple tail lengths behind her.
"Good morning Ragingspire." She sighed happily, her steps graceful as she made her way towards the tom. Effortless confidence turned her steps into glides as she made her way to the tom's side. "Don't worry, I can wait for you to get ready. Luckily, we are up a tad bit earlier than usual so there is no rush!"
OOC Notes: Ohohoho yesss! I finally got the chance to rp this show girl <3
Ragingspire cast a cursory glance over at the she-cat as she acknowledged him, planning to get started, but had to stop and do a double take. On closer inspection he noticed her spotless, neatly groomed fur and the brightness of her eyes - she had been up for a while, though why it took so much effort to prepare for a dawn patrol he couldn't fathom. They were going to be trekking through the dew early in the morning, it wasn't going to be the cleanest task, now was it? Ragingspire had never put much effort in his appearance to begin with, but especially on days like this he was not going to waste valuable sleep time getting ready.
"Morning, Hickorysplendor. Couldn't sleep?" He raised one brow. "No need to wait, it's all take care of. Let's head out. I want to bring back enough warm prey for us to have some too, not just the kits and the elders," he added, with a disdainful glare toward the fresh-kill pile. He didn't mind eating cold prey, but he preferred it freshly caught. The two of them were tasked with some early hunting, not checking the borders, to his immense relief - this would be far faster, if they were lucky. It was early enough the prey should be starting to emerge from their dens.
he she-cat swayed in prideful content, feeling her medium silver coat sway gracefully along with her. " I slept like a kit after a good hardy feeding of milk." She purred, finding herself partly entranced with her work. "Well you can't possibly think of going out looking lik-" The she-cat purred teasingly, her massive ego slowed her mind from immediately catch the full context of the tom's words, taking a few moments too long to abruptly stop mid-sentence, her large green eyes blinked a couple times in confusion before widening in sudden shock "No wait- I thought this was a Border Patrol I signed up for!" She meowed indignantly, her bright and cool grin now melted into a scowl. " You cannot possibly tell me that I woke up at the crack of dawn to groom my pelt to perfection, only to get out on patrol and weave dirt, burrs, twigs and blood into my my beautiful pelt?..." The she-cat's voice rose as each word escaped her muzzle but halfway through her declaration, her pitch fell heavy with disappointment. A small pout grew at edge of the conflicted she-cat's mouth, her green eyes narrowed slightly. The internal battle was visible in every physical inch of the she-cat's body.
Looking like what exactly? Ragingspire fought to keep himself from grinning, first at how indignant she was he dared to go out like this, and then at her reaction to their patrol. She must be annoyed, but he couldn't help wanting to laugh. It was a patrol, what did she expect? It wasn't his fault she didn't pay attention to what they were doing, or that she had wasted her time getting ready today. Besides, both types of patrol would involve getting dirty, so he didn't see what the fuss was about.
"That's right, but you do look so charming," he assured her. "I'm sure the prey will appreciate your effort as they drag you backward through every tangled bush and into the biggest mud piles they can find, probably with some burrs for good measure, maybe poison ivy if you're truly feeling lucky." His bronze tail flicked as he looked back toward the exit. "Can we go now? I want to get going," he repeated, "and delaying won't make you any less likely to get dirty."
ickorysplendor ear's flickered upwards at what she interpreted as a compliment. Her pair of greenish eyes rose up to meet the bronze tom's own pair, giving away the inner turmoil of emotions brewing in her. While everything in her screamed out in frustration and self loathing, she couldn't help but grin victoriously.
"So you think I look charming?" Hickorysplendor gushed, her chin rising as she basked in the half compliment, milking it for all it's worth and more, ignoring the rest of the tom's words in vain attempt to not only avoid the horror that was painted but also to bask in the glory that was a sly compliment hidden in a briar patch of words. The she-cat rose to her paws, her feathery tail whipping with a new a sudden burst of gloating energy as she she-cat stepped towards the camp entrance. "I guess you are right." She sighed with false disappointment
OOC Notes: She is literally one of my favorite warrior cats I have ever made <3
Ragingspire rolled his eyes. Of course the only thing she heard was a compliment, what else should he have expected? At least she wasn't hung up on dirtying her pelt anymore so they could finally get going. "Yes, Hickorysplendor," he replied with exaggerated patience, "I think you look perfectly nice. As does everyone else."
He headed toward the camp entrance in step beside her, resisting an amused grin. If she responded so well to compliments maybe this patrol wouldn't be too bad, it would be easy to keep her happy, and she had a good smile. Her energy was beginning to rub off on him as the sleep finally faded from his eyes and his movements became more smooth and alert. Ragingspire wasn't exactly graceful but there was a poise to his walk, an arch to every step that lifted his paws clear of the ground and gave a little too much insight to his proper upbringing at the paws of his leader-mother. He would have hated it if he knew it was there, but the subtle change in his motion made all the difference as his smooth and limber gait was dignified even paired with his messy coat.
"What do you think, should we hunt close to camp and hope we get lucky? Or head out further?"
ickorysplendor feigned a shocked look as she turned her head in Ragingspire's direction "Two compliments in the span of just a couple of minutes" She gasped, a sly smile growing as she nudged Ragingspire playfully "Someone's in a great mood today."
Hickorysplendor rolled her eyes at the tom's question, her vividly bright gaze growing a bit dull at the reminder of their responsibility "You pick. I am doomed regardless of where we decide to hunt." She spoke, dramatically emphasizing her displeasure in the task, but in actuality, the silver she-cat wasn't completely disappointed. She rather enjoyed the company, more than she had anticipated. Maybe it was just the compliments that placed her in a good mood, or maybe it was the company. Hickorysplendor glanced casually at Ragingspire, her thoughts wondering as she took in the tom, now more in a serious light. Sure, she had seen him many times are camp, heck grew up along side him, but he was nothing more than the firey hothead who often bickered with authority from time to time and was know for a rather bitter desposition. It was surprising but quite welcoming to the she-cat to see a more tame side of the tom.
"You know, you are quite a handsome tom, despite you lack up upkeep." Hickorysplendor spoke bluntly, a sly grin revealing her lack of hesitancy in her declaration "I am surprise you have yet to be swooped away by the pretty little she-cats that are sprinkled throughout our clan."
Ragingspire wisely chose not to answer with another compliment as they continued on. He was trying to soften her up, but he didn't want to grow her ego too much. He didn't know her well but it was already abundantly clear to him she had a high opinion of herself and her looks—not that she didn't deserve it. She really was nice on the eyes. It had been a waste of time for her to look so cleaned up and put together this morning, but even he could appreciate the effect, it was even easier to admire her without the distraction of untidy or dirty fur. Not that he was admiring her, except in a strictly analytical sense, of course.
He rolled his eyes at her answer but decided to strike out a little bit further ahead. He was feeling generous, and the gentle valley he was leading them toward had short grass and flowers that might catch in her fur a little bit less than if they were trekking through dense undergrowth. "Thanks," he replied dryly, suppressing the urge to roll his eyes. Ragingspire wasn't sure if that was a dig at his unkempt fur or an actual compliment, but he really didn't care either: he wasn't about to go changing his appearance just because she didn't like it, so he would just appreciate her kindness instead. He couldn't stop a snort at her last declaration, though. "Oh yeah, everyone is just tripping over themselves to come get a piece of this."
