The early Leaffall sun shone warmly on Graythorn's back as he led the way to the wildflower meadow. Now was the time to start creating their Leafbare storage of herbs before the early frosts kill the plants. From his mouth dangled the small hollow branch which he used to carry back larger amounts of herbs. A small vine wrapped tightly around the branch, creating a convenient handle. The gray tabby set the log down and looked around the meadow. "Well, we've got a large job ahead of us," he grumbled to Hazelpaw. "We might as well get started." In front of him stretched a large marigold patch. "I want you to start with these marigolds. Nip them off like this," He bit off one then continued. "and place them in a neat pile right here."
He had been almost bouncing off the walls before they had headed out to train, eagerness making his paws feel tingly. Once they reached the meadows, Hazelpaw reigned in his excitement and watched Graythorn intently, his tail fluffing out with anticipation. "You gotcha!" He announced. Taking in his surroundings, he dove into the work, nipping the stems and placing them in the hollow branch. For a moment, he was quiet, making sure that he felt more confident with grabbing marigolds, before he asked, "Graythorn? Could you quiz me on the herbs? I want to make sure that I am in tip-top shape for whatever is to come." In the corners of his eyes, he watched the gray tabby, trying to mirror his every move, to embody Graythorn's confidence.

Graythorn eyed his apprentice with narrowed eyes then he let them relax. Hazlepaw didn't do anything wrong. He just wants to learn. But why does he have to be so happy about it? He thought back to when he was an apprentice. Being a medicine cat was the last thing he wanted to do. He dreamed of becoming a great warrior, being victorious in battles, and lauded for his prowess. But that all changed when Dreamchaser picked him to be her successor. He had trudged through his training with a spirit of reluctance. He had learned how to be a medicine cat because he had to not because he wanted to. And now he had to impart his knowledge to someone else.
He let out a sigh. "Very well," he grumbled. "What are the uses for marigold and how is it given?"
In his excitement, Hazelpaw ripped one of the marigold stem a bit too harshly and tore the plant in half. Giving an embarrassed chuckle, he gave Graythorn an apologetic smile, his ears flattening a bit, as he let the ruined plant fall to the ground.
Pouncing on a new one, he took his time and as he placed the marigold plant in the basket, he said, “That’s an easy one! Marigold is good for wounds: it helps stop bleeding and infections. If the petals are chewed up, they can be applied to the wounds- Oh! And also the stems – which is why you’re having me bite them off two.” A pleased purr rumbled in his throat and he looked expectantly at Graythorn, waiting for the next question – or, if his mentor was feeling generous, praise.

When Hazelpaw ruined the one marigold flower, Graythorn's lip curled up in a snarl but he bit back any reply. Only a sigh escaped him as he relaxed back to normal. He had to focus hard on calming himself. This is hard, he thought, but I have to do this. I can't drive away another apprentice. He was convinced he had done just that and vowed not to do it again. "Correct," he meowed when his apprentice finished speaking. "But try to slow down and think about what you're doing. Haste makes waste." He glanced at the ruined marigold and then focused his eyes back on the tom. That was all the reprimand he would give this time.
"Alright now," he began again, "If catmint isn't available, what is the best herb to treat coughs?"
At Graythorn’s reprimand, Hazelpaw gave him a chagrined smile, ears flattening a bit in embarrassment. But he bounced back at the new question, determined to not mess up this time, as he set back to work. He took his time in his reply, stalling for a bit, as he scrambled to think of an example. Setting the new marigold stem in the basket, his cobweb addled mind sparked with an answer. “Honey!” He exclaimed, head raising excitedly to meet Graythorn’s eyes.
“Remember, you had treated me for white cough when I was really little? My mom and dad said that that was where I became interested in learning medicine. Well, before they…you know…” He turned his head to the side, as if too shy to say the word “died.” But he blew right past that discomfort and forged ahead, turning back to look at his mentor. “That was the first time I met you, you know. Honestly, you seemed really scary from afar. But you were so reliable and confident when you treated me, I just knew that I wanted to learn from you.” Hazelpaw scuffled his paw on the ground, as he continued his confession, “I promise that I won’t let you down.”
He turned around and gave Graythorn a lopsided grin. “So that’s why…! Next question!” It was almost a song, as he swung his head back and forth, before diving back into the fields, and nipping at another marigold stem.

Graythorn recalled that time Hazelpaw had mentioned. It seemed hardly possible that the tiny kit he treated was now his apprentice. He felt the unspoken pain and wondered if Hazelpaw now viewed him as a 'father figure'. If he does, I hope I won't let him down. He thought of his adoptive daughter, Mudkit - no not anymore he had to remind himself, Mudthistle. She was inquisitive and energetic as a kit, much like Hazelpaw. She too had lost her parents. Then the thought struck him how much alike they are and that caused a slight smile to grace his mouth briefly. Perhaps training an apprentice won't be so bad. And to tell the truth, he was both honored and humbled by what Hazelpaw said about him.
"Although honey is good to use for coughs, it isn't an herb and not the answer I was looking for," he meowed. "This is a plant and it has yellow leaves." He looked around and sure enough, there was a small patch of the flower nearby. He swished his tail nonchalantly in the direction of the herb.
tansy

Hazelpaw made a noise in the back of his throat and let out a dramatic sigh. “Oh alright, since you want to play this game with technicalities…!” As Graythorn flicked his tail, his eyes wandered over to the patch of flowers and for a moment, the grin on his face froze. Oh Starclan, what was that called again? He vaguely remembered the long list of herbs that Graythorn had rattled off to him, though that herb had been in the middle of the spiel. It wasn’t his fault that there were just so many herbs! It had seemed like such a long tirade that Hazelpaw had drifted off midway through and had snapped back just at the right time to answer a question.
Swallowing, Hazelpaw glanced around, trying to buy himself time. “Oh, right, that herb. Well of course I know that one, come on Graythorn, gimme a harder one next time!” He laughed, racking his brain as he continued to prattle on, “That’s just the herb that you used during that horrible case of greencough that shook SummerClan, you remember that don’t you? The whole Clan was getting so antsy-“
His eyes widened and he looked back at Graythorn, the smile growing wider. “Tansy!” He shouted, startling even himself. Hazelpaw cleared his throat and said in a quieter voice, “The answer is tansy."

An amused looked crossed the normally taciturn medicine cat's face as he watched Hazelpaw's search for the herb's name. "Yes, that's right," he replied when the apprentice finally came up with the correct answer. "And yes, I did use tansy during that greencough epidemic. It's a good thing we had lots of it growing here." He looked at the patch of tansy growing nearby.
"Alright then," he continued turning his attention back to Hazelpaw. "Something harder ..... What do Watermint, mallow leaves, and juniper berries all have in common?"
Hazelpaw thought for a moment, settling down and wrapping his tail around his paws. StarClan this was a tricky one… Remembering one herb was bad enough, let alone commonalities between them. He scrunched his face up, trying to go through the list with little success. Finally, he gave Graythorn an apologetic smile, his ears flattening a bit. “Ah, sorry. I don’t remember. I know juniper berries though! They can be used to calm down others, but also give them strength.” He tipped his head to the side, pausing for another moment. “Which is an interesting combination – couldn’t it be used to create a small army of level-headed killing monsters?”
“Have you ever heard of a Clan or group using juniper berries to fuel their Warriors?”
(Why thank you! c: It took me a while to come up with a natural rhyming word for tansy ^^;; Also thank you so much for your patience with my reply time! ❤︎)

(Not a problem ^^)
"I can't say that I have but I suppose it could be done if needed," Graythorn replied. "Although meat is the best and fastest way to strengthen a cat." He bent down to straighten a few of the marigolds sticking out of the hollow log. "You're right about the berries helping to calm and strengthen but they are also very helpful for bellyaches. Watermint is the first choice for that and then mallow leaves. So the answer is they all can be used to cure a stomachache."
"Let's gather a few of those tansys and then we'll go by the stream to look for some watermint. I seem to recall we're getting low on those too." The gray tabby went over to where the yellow plants were growing and began to bite off a few stems.
