The wind sung its song of sorrow, echoing in the twitching ears of Exsperavit, the god of this pitiful realm. Really, what was the universe thinking placing him here? Why not any other world where everybody knew of their end. He cackled unevenly. “Oh, universe, you silly goose. You have fun in your little games, don’t’cha? Don’t’cha?” He laughed again, stomping his paw down next to the tunnel he was digging. Usually, there was no time for breaks, but he had been digging literally all day and it was nearly sunset. Maybe. He stared at the sky, the universe’s wonderful canvas. Maybe it was just playing tricks on him again. The colours swirled, and a few white ghosties danced in the distance. Where was he again? Mind going blank got a moment, Exsperavit stared down at his paws, some of the claws missing from all his diggings.
“You want me to sleep, universe?” He addressed, his tone loud and in afraid. He chuckled again. “And why would I do that? Why, sleep is just death being shy.” Recently, he had found his future vision. Tonight, if he slept, he would die. The ghosties would rip him from his body, grab hold of his soul and drag him who knows where. They would have their way. They would win. But they won’t. Exsperavit never loses, of course.

"Do you come up with these phrases on your own, my little sparrow? Or do you get like, edgy younglings to to preread them for you?" The voice of god asked him from above, low and laced with humor and with just a touch of condescension. Of course, he knew the other wouldn't accept him as god, despite the difference in their status. And Funk would rarely play along with Exsperavit's delusions. But the Proxy was loud and proud and he at least respected that. As he got older, he found Exsperavit similar to Funk's own kits rather than his fellow Proxies. But he did his job well enough, so who was he to complain? He laid on one of the branches above the little sparrow, head resting on his paws and green eyes watching with a mild interest. Funk E'tan didn't know when he came here, or how long he had watched the other dig. Though he was suddenly thankful for the silence, so he must have been here awhile.

“Sparrow? I am not a sparrow, silly mortal, I’m a cat! See?” He twitched his ears, flicked his tail, and let out a long, crooked meow. “I knew the mortals were stupid, but I didn’t think they were this idiotic.” He laughed hysterically, brought nearly to tears. “Oh, it is you!” He stared up at the cat, a little Cheshire in the branches. “The one who calls himself “E’tan.” So, this mortal thought he was the big boss, eh? How delightful! A lovely little toy for his little bathtub games. This mortal seemed odd enough, he should believe him, right?
“Hey, you’re not suppose to be above me, you’re suppose to be looking up at me. No, no, you got it all wrong. Come down here, and don’t forget your bow, you know that’s how I like it.”

Truly a wild beat Exsperavit played. Funk liked it, letting out a low laugh, "Whatever you say, Ex-sparrow-vit. You see it's cause spera...nah, you might not get my great sense of mortal humor." He stood up, balancing on the edge of the branch. The most floating he could do was the light bobbing the branch did as it tried to support his weight. Of course he ended up in a group with a cat with another god complex. But the little sparrow in the fields was so entertaining, Funk couldn't decide if he hated him or loved him. One thing was for sure, he wasn't bowing to him. " 'Fraid not, Sparrow. Even without the E'tan, I bow to no cat, god or not. I'd take your head for less, but what's a god without a little mercy? Here." The Nemesis fell down to a lower branch, still above Exsperavit as he lowered one of his front paws to his eye level, "I'll take a kiss to make up for it." Whiskers twitching in amusement, he stared down at his proxy, far more cheshire than not.

“I do not appreciate your silly pun, mortal.” Exsperavit declared with a straight face, waving his half bald tail. Chewing off his fur, it seemed, had become more common now than ever before. It wasn’t just the base of his tail, it now expanded halfway up and down his legs, as well as a space on his back. The amount of disgusting hair balls wasn’t enough the keep him away. He stared at Funk’s paw for a moment, utterly bewildered.
”Why would I do such a thing? I wouldn’t even sit on your dirty mortal feets. Let alone grace them with a kiss. But I get that you’re not the most respectable of mortals, so I will let this slide for now. I don’t expect the same attitude when I save you, though.”

Funk frowned, trying to avoid looking at Exsperavit's bald spots. Sometimes he forgot how nice having fur was until he had to actually see another cat's skin. He needed to teach some of them a better way of dealing of their stress, at least he ways he didn't have to see as soon as he approached them.
"Fine, I'll let it slide this time, only because gods are just as entertaining to mortals as mortals are to gods." He pulled his paw back up, not without flicking one of the whiskers on Exsperavit's head, "You're not the most respectable god either. If I'm like...Hades, you're like Eris." He put his paw to his chest when referring to himself, and then pointed it back at Exsperavit, "Anyway, let's dance in each other palms. Ghosties telling you anything interesting?"

“Ha! Gods are not to be mistaken for jokes.” The scraggly tom stared up the trunk of the tree, forming a seemingly ever lasting line to the sky. Of course, the tree probably wasn’t that tall. He looked back at Funk, eyeing him strangely for a moment. What were they talking about again? His mind turned up blank for a moment, the ever confusing canvas wiping itself clean for only a few seconds. Then, the mess of thoughts splattered across his psyche.
“The ghosties? The ghosties?” He let out a barking laugh. “The only thing they spur is nonesense! Senseless, senseless souls. Silly experiences that have no part in my biography.” He kicked the dirt with his back legs, sending a stone rolling along. He wondered how long that stone’s been there. Since, maybe, before his time? “All they want is me in their dirty grips. Why, have they told you anything?” He tilted his head, moving much too close to the mortal.

"When gods want to stop being jokes, they can come and smack me themselves. Then I'll believe." The bengal shrugged, then finally hopped down from his branchy perch, "and no, that doesn't include you. Not in that mortal shell at least. Smack me and you can join the ghosties in the afterlife." Jokey as ever, his tone held an edge of a threat. Just enough to hold a little more power in the exchange, not that he could predict just what Exsperavit would do. He circled a blade of grass with a paw as the other went blank.
Jumping back a little when the distance between the two quickly shrank, he lifted a paw to push him away. But let it drop as he searched the other's eyes for something, anything he could read. But he came up empty. Glancing up at the clear sky as he thought, he returned his gaze to Sparrow and gave him a small smile as he thought of another ploy. Maybe he needed to stop playing with people, but Exsperavit was a god, he could use some dragging down to earth, right. Stretching over to where his lips were right next to his ear, Funk whispered, "they got business with you tonight, don't they? That's what they said."

“Mortal! Mortal, you’re hilarious! I’ve no reason to harm you, really, though I doubt you could lay a paw on me.” Exsperavit laughed, lowering his head to catch his failing breath. He looked Funk in the eyes for just a few moments before turning away, strengthening the distance between them. Funk was a strange one, he had to admit. Hard to read, hard to decipher. At least for Exsperavit. But, if Exsperavit couldn’t read him, then obviously nobody else could, right? He was superior, wasn’t he?
“The ghosties talked to you, did they?” He couldn’t help the seedling of fear that twisted in his gut. They had business? He didn’t refer to their want of him ‘business,’ so it was different? What else could they possibly want? “And—and what did they say, mortal?” He asked, a tinge of anxiety to his voice.

Funk watched Exsperavit for a moment. The grey tom was either incredibly easy or incredibly hard to read, and seemed to flip flop between them until someone could figure him out. That someone was not Funk E'tan but he loved the idea of playing with his proxy just a little. "They want to drag you back. Into their world. Into the grave. You can squirm and fight, but they won't care. They'll hold you down until that body of yours is maggot food. And they'll strike when you least expect it." There was a kernel of truth in those lies. He had no idea who the ghosties were, though Sparrow found their presence either laughable or worrisome. Sparrow didn't need to know that was Funk's reoccurring nightmare for the last few days. So maybe it was the ghosties, or his devil in the crypt, or stress. He couldn't tell which, but he knew one thing. He always woke up before even getting a glimpse at their world, but he didn't know if Exsperavit would do the same.

“Ha! That’s just the normal!” He laughed, bouncing on his toes. “They just aren’t nearly as persistent.” He thought over the last part for a while, mulling over the ghosties’ apparent plan for a good few minutes. “Least expect it?” He said finally, face drawing a blank. They wouldn’t—they couldn’t—get him! “I have to hide! Prepare myself! Why do they want the world to end so badly? Why are they after me?” He was sick of this! He didn’t want to change the world! He wanted to—he wanted to be normal.
“Come on!” He urged the mortal, nudging him roughly with his nose. “We must find a hiding place!”

He watched the scraggly tom bounce up and down, a little disappointed it didn't hit any cords. Oh well, if you had similar dreams, hearing another wouldn't hit as hard as they did the first time. But his throwaway line did, and while it didn't apply to Funk since only his dreams have been haunted, Exsperavit didn't get a break like that. "Wish I could tell you bud, but that's ju--hey hey." Funk started, but stopped when the sparrow began to push him in some direction roughly. He considered resisting, but it was the Nemesis' duty to make sure his proxies were fine, right? And Senescence and Innocentia appeared to either deal with their demons themselves or go to each other. It didn't matter how, just that they didn't share Exsperavit's...eccentricities. And Funk was always up for a little adventure, so he went along. "Sure. There's somewhere here or we can go into the city? It's a walk but I know a nice little club out there."

“City?” He tilted his head a bit too much, stepping closer to Funk. He stared owl-eyed at the tom, as if studying him. “City?” He repeated, taking a step back and straightening himself out. Of course, he leaned down subconsciously into a hunch once more. “Why not!” He cackled. “We can try! Oh, oh, what’s this club you speak of? Mortal parties? Of course, of course!” He twitched his ears, the sing-song of the distant winds echoing in his ears. Why couldn’t the earth shut up for one second? He was busy, for heaven’s sake!

"Yeah, mortal club. I got an old acquaintance out there, part of a little fighting ring. But we could always go to a mortal club or wherever really. There's a lot to see, long as you can handle it." An outing to the city with Exsperavit was not what he was expecting to do today, but hey, why not. He rarely got to get out as of late, and he was awfully curious about how the sparrow would react to the nightlife. Funk didn't even mind his erratic movements, keeping straight as they walked, "Got anywhere in mind?"
