Normally, on a night like this, Goldenpaw would be sleeping in her nest with the other apprentices, curled up with the others and soft and warm. But that wasn't the case. Not tonight, not anymore. After Kasdeya's death, she wasn't sure if things could get worse even with the support of her clanmates. But it did. The other apprentices tried to cheer her up by taking her to the Endless Falls, but instead she ended up captured by twolegs. The floor under her was cold, only tolerable cause she'd been there for what felt like forever. She recognized the smells of the other Forest Clans and the cries of a few of her clanmates, but she couldn't see them. Having lost track of the days, the only way she knew time had passed was the twolegs coming and going. Injected and poked with only starclan knows what, she felt numb all over and could barely see. The world spun and it was like she was constantly falling asleep and waking up from a dream. All she could do was finally succumb to actual sleep.
As the apprentice faded into unconsciousness, the setting changed, becoming pleasantly warm. When she 'came to' in the depths of sleep, she was on a beach, sprawling and golden, stretched alongside the sapphire sea. It was quiet except for the gentle murmur of the waves on the shore, but when Goldenpaw turned to her right, a figure was seated near the water. The tall, wiry she-cat was white and fluffy, unstained by the blood that had drenched her when her two lives were lost. Her gaze was focused on Goldenpaw, her one blue, one orange eye bright with emotion. "Goldenpaw," she greeted, whiskers twitching as she smiled.

The transformation went almost unnoticed, but feeling the hard ground underneath her give way to sand made her jump. She stared at it suspiciously, sinking one of her front paws into it and shaking the grains off. It wasn't real, she knew. Too many dreams of paradise passed her by in favor of a cold cell. Turning and seeing Kasdeya felt unreal. Sure, she was mentored by a ghost, but Tigerpaw wasn't someone she knew, someone she loved, someone killed before her. She had no way to say what brought them together, but Goldenpaw could only sit and stare at her for what felt like forever. Kas looked great, like she wasn't dead and visiting her in a dream. Goldenpaw knew she looked worse, with her ribs showing and fur matted and her eyes oh so tired. A part of her wanted to close them again, go back to that cold. She didn't deserve this warmth, no matter how much she craved it. Blinking didn't make Kas, or this glittering sea, or the shimmering sands disappear. She could only face it, could only move forward.
Her pawsteps were soft, staggering, but soft. Even in this dream realm, she felt on the verge of collapse, but she held together. "Kas, is that really you?" She asked weakly.
Kasdeya simply nodded, standing to meet her younger friend halfway. Her movements were freer than they'd been in life, less concerned with strength and power and more fluid and graceful. Her tongue rasped against the fur of Goldenpaw's forehead, trying to comfort her as she had yearned to after her death. "Sweet Goldenpaw," she whispered, pressing the length of her white form against the apprentice. "I'm so sorry that I left you like that. I can't imagine what you've been through." Something in death had changed Kasdeya; it hadn't erased her years of pain, but it had put a distance between who she had been and who she had wanted to be. Her words came easier than they had in life, emotions were simpler for her to express. "I've missed you."

It was the faint feeling of warmth that made it finally feel real, and she pressed onto it. At this moment, Goldenpaw would have given anything to just burn in it, let it completely take her and leave nothing behind. But that wasn't what this warmth was, and it stopped at the border of comfort and uncomfort. Bright golden fur wrapped around Kasdeya, and it was almost like she had finally gone back. Back to before this whole mess. And she knew it wasn't real, that time only marched forward and how much she wanted to shatter that conductor's baton.
"It's been so hard. I've missed you so much Kas." She simply took in all Kas was for now, murmuring against her fur.
"I'm sorry," the dead cat repeated simply, letting her tongue brush against Goldenpaw's ears. After a few long moments, she pulled away, to better look into the eyes of the younger cat. "I can't see you, in the living world, and I've been worried. Are you okay? What's going in Dayclan?" The former deputy was stuck, somewhere between living and dying, on the beach that had been her home as a youngling. Time was so languid here, and she wasn't even sure how long ago she had died. She couldn't move on, not until she spoke to Goldenpaw, and so here she was, trying to squeeze all she could from this last encounter.

Goldenpaw tore her head from Kasdeya's warm fur to meet her eyes, but the instant Dayclan was brought up, she looked out towards the sea. She felt as though she was sinking in the sand, or the tide would pull her in. Knowing that nothing would happen if she did, she'd only be ripped away from this plane for a short time, she took a deep breath in and then exhaled. Slowly building up the courage to speak, she answered, "I don't know. I'm not in Dayclan right now. A bit after you died, I got captured by twolegs. I've been in a cage ever since." The pleasant of warmth was sweated out by embarrassment, like it was bad for her to have been caught despite plenty of older cats here as well.
Kasdeya blinked, taken by surprise. "You're not- you've been captured?" Her teeth gritted down, and she suddenly felt angry with herself. "If I hadn't died this wouldn't have happened." The white she-cat looked away, out over the calm of the endless sea. Her shoulders rose and fell slowly as she steadied her breathing, some foreign emotion in her mismatched eyes. "This is where I grew up, you know. Primal Instinct used to be out here, on this island, before you were born." She ground her paws into the golden sand, feeling the grainy texture under her feet. "It was the only thing I ever liked about the League. The sea, the sun, the sand. It's my happy place. Dayclan was better for me, but I still missed the island." She turned back to Goldenpaw, her eyes watering slightly. "I'm sorry that I died. I'm sorry that I'm not... there, not around to protect you now."

"You can't say that." Emboldened by Kas' words, she looked into the other she-cat's eyes, "It's entirely possible you would have ended up in the same situation I'm in and I wouldn't want that." Goldenpaw shuddered at the thought, shaking her head as she stared out across the sea and thought. The sea that was once Primal Instinct's. She doubted anything would have been different if she was brought this island and not to the manor, but at least she could have taken comfort in the sea, just like Kasdeya.
"Don't apologize. I'd rather you be here than stuck in a cage with me."
"This is a cage of its own," Kasdeya pressed her nose to Goldenpaw's forehead briefly. "The only cats I care about are on the other side of mortality, and I'm stuck here in limbo. I can't see you, can't protect you, and this is probably the only time I can talk to you, for a while. A lot of the mental pain that I went through in life was distanced from me when I died, but there's fresh pain here." She took a deep breath. "But that's my own burden to bear. I can already feel my strength fading, and it won't be long now until I cross to whatever awaits on the other side. Just know that I'll always remember you, okay?"

"What?! Already?" Panic sunk in. She couldn't even process everything she had said. How was she gonna get out of here sane without Kas? Having warmth handed you and then taken away was worse than having none at all. It was no surprise she was gonna wake up, but to not even be able to visit Kasdeya in her dreams again was worse. She wanted to beg, cry, do anything to give Kasdeya the strength to stay, but she couldn't. Only able to choke on her own tongue, and press her nose to Kas'.
"I'll get out of here. I'll get stronger. So don't worry about me." That swell of confidence was only a tide, and it was going out faster than Goldenpaw realized. She had no idea if she would, but she needed to try. For Kas' sake and her own.
"I'm sorry... I fought so hard to be able to see you, but now that I have, I can't fight to stay anymore." Kasdeya closed her eyes tightly, moving to press against Goldenpaw. "Fight for your future. Go farther than I could in the time I had. This isn't the last time I'll see you, but this is goodbye, for now. I always loved you, Goldenpaw. I'm glad that my death meant you could live, in the end. I'm so proud of you." Her voice diminished in volume, her pressure against the apprentice's side growing weaker as she spoke. After a long moment of silence, there was no more of the former deputy, leaving Goldenpaw alone in the expanse of sand and water.

"That's okay. Th-Thank you for this. Even just a drop of water is appreciated in a fiery hell. I love you too. I'm proud of you too. Thank y-you for giving me this second chance at life. I won't squander it." Her voice shook, harder than she wanted. Just to feel like she had some sort of semblance of control. Pressing herself against her fading friend, ears straining to hear her voice anymore. Just as quickly, she fell face first into the sand. Jumping to her feet, she spun around, scattering sand everywhere that only fell in with the rest. Scrambling to the sea, she stood in the wake, unable to even feel the water on her paws. Staring out over the expanse of the sea, voice unable to make a sound. Instead, she sat down, a thousand words left unsaid in her mind but no way to get them out. The sun beat down, warmth enveloping her. She couldn't fall back asleep, only stare as she felt herself being pulled into the sea.
A hint of a promise and the leftover tint of love remained after Kasdeya was gone, though the sun grew hotter and hotter and the waves rougher and rougher, until they succeeded in sweeping Goldenpaw out into the ocean. Once her head sank under the waves, the dream vanished around her, leaving her back in the cage she was trapped in, with only the memory of the beach in her brain.

(sounds like a good place to stop to me)
That scene was unforgettable, and the only thing keeping her sane in this place. As much as she tried to recreate it, it was never the exact same. The blue of the sea was always off, the sand felt more like wood shavings or grass rather than actual sand. And of course, she was always alone. Only left with that promise. The promise to fight for her future. But where exactly was that going to take her? No one knew. They only knew cries of confusion and pain.
