Littlebird's golden eyes raised to meet his, without even a word he had seen straight through her. She couldn't figure out how he always managed to do that, to know exactly how she was feeling within only a moment of being in his presence. She couldn't hide anything from him, and yet here she was attempting to hide the biggest secret of all. She took in a deep breathe and shook her head "No... no one suspects anything..." she trailed off. A moment of silence slithered its way in between them before she continued, "Yet... Leatherstar, I can't keep seeing you. Not like this" her gaze never wavered, he needed to know that she was serious. As much as it hurt, this couldn't continue. She had to protect the little lives growing within her. She had to protect him.

[ omg i found it x333 ]
Leatherstar's face fell instantly. There was no humor or even a concern in his emerald gaze. He searched her face unsure of what she had just said to him. What happened to them being meant for one another. Weren't they written in the stars? Destined to change the path of the clans? Weren't they molded from the same cold mountain that had given them both bigger things than either of them could have ever imagined? Who could stop them?
The brown leader seemed to flop back on his tail as he sat down. "Wait what are you saying...?" His face bore the pain of someone who has just been shattered into a million pieces.

"I'm saying we can't be together Leatherstar" her composure broke as the look of defeat seeped into his expression. She couldn't meet his eyes any more, as guilt bubbled forth and threatened to consume her. Littlebird wanted nothing more than to pull him into an embrace, to tell him everything. To confess her biggest secret, to share with him her burden. She closed her eyes and took a deep breathe "You are the leader of WinterClan now, we both know that your clan-mates would never allow you to be with me. They will use me to tear you down. If they suspect your loyalties are divided, you have a lot more than your leadership to loose..." a tear rolled down her cheek "Leatherstar, I love you. I will always love you...but we can't be together"

He watched her talk but he barely heard her. I Love You. He blinked. She hadn't said that to him yet. And now of all times when she was breaking his heart she chose to say it. He made a sound in his throat like a whimper or a suppressed sob. He wasn't one to cry but a tear escaped anyways and dropped onto the forest floor between them.
"I love you too." he said. It was the hardest thing in the world not to argue with her. But something in her gaze told him he would only be making this harder for both of them. "Stay with me." he shook his head before she could tell him no. "I dont mean forever." he blinked away the haze that more threatening tears left across his gaze. "Just tonight. Don't leave me here thinking I made a mistake."

Her mouth opened to argue, but before she could even utter a sound he continued. Her mouth slowly closed as she listened, a soft sob escaping. She knew he loved her. She had known that since the first time he had saved her from her foster siblings antics. However, hearing him say it was a different matter. She couldn't find the words to answer, as they became lost in her storm of emotions she was filling. She reached for them, as the slipped away. She crumbled, leaning into him as her answer. No words had a place here. Words meant that this had to come to end, that this wasn't just a nightmare.

He met her half way. He welcomed the feel of her against his chest and her head nestled under his chin. He gave a sad broken purr and gently licked her ear. Maybe it was intended to comfort her, but he knew it was himself he desperately needed to console.
"For tonight there is no WinterClan. No SunClan. No one but us." he whiskered into the soft fur between her ears. "Just us."

If only it was just us... Littlebird thought to herself as she leaned into his warmth, his breathe tickling the fur along her neck. If it was only us things would be different. We could be together, we could raise these kits the way we wanted. We wouldn't have to worry about clan politics, and I wouldn't be putting you in an impossible position by telling you the truth. Yet none of this left her lips, this was her burden to bare. To save his soul, Littlebird would do anything.... including shattering her own. She knew she should pull away, to stop this now. The longer she stayed the harder it would be to leave, but if staying would give him some solace. To show him that what the two of them had was real, she would stay for him. She craved his touch, and perhaps she to longed for one more night to just be "Only for tonight"

He settled into where they were. For a time he really thought he didn't care if anyone happened by them on either side of the border. What they would see is cruel reality in motion. Leatherstar pressed his nose into the back of Littlebird's ear and breathed in her scent. Could time stand still? Did the ancients have such power? He pulled away a bit to motion with his head towards the southern part of the border. Loner territory. Somewhere they were likely not to be found. Just for tonight.

Part of her knew that this was a mistake... That staying here even one more moment would only make the inevitable more painful. Yet against her better judgment here she was agreeing to stay with him for one more night. Surely this meant she had officially lost her mind. Time after time, she kept making the same mistake. Time after time she kept going back to him, knowing that they shouldn't be together....
Before she even knew what was happening her paws began to carry her after him.
