Crimsonlife stretched out idly in a patch of sunshine near the main stream. This is the life! he thought as he watched the water gurgle over the rocks in the stream bed. He saw an occasional fish but he didn't feel like fishing right now. The smell of rabbits wafted over to him from the other side of the flowing water. He thought about going over to the rabbit meadow when he first came here and maybe he will later. But right now he just wanted to enjoy the sun's warmth, something he couldn't do while he was an apprentice. I wonder what Mudthistle is doing right now, he contemplated as he closed his heavy eyes.
That question was swiftly answered when the familiar scent of Crimsonlife's best friend wafted to his nose, only to be immediately followed to the sound of thundering pawsteps behind him, and the feeling of the wind being knocked out of him as a large mass collided with the tom, sending them both rolling into the river. A small flock of birds hopping about on the other bank took off into the air in a flurry of surprised chirps and ruffled feathers while dodging the spray of cool water. Mudthistle let out a laugh as she sat upright in the river, shaking the drops off her head as she smiled down at the other new warrior. "Ha! Got ya!"

At first Crimsonlife was alarmed until he caught the sweet scent of his best friend, Mudthistle. Then suddenly he was knocked into the stream and the shock of the cold water engulfed him. He went completely under then surfaced quickly sputtering water out of his mouth. "Well I aught to ..." he meowed as he splashed more water on to the young she cat with a swat from his paw. "Got ya back!"
Lifting a paw to her face to block out the spray, Mudthistle laughed triumphantly at her friend, grinning proudly even as her face was getting pelted by water. "Pssh, that's what you call revenge? You gotta be more creative, Crimsonlife. A warrior needs to be prepared for anything; that's what Ravenstone taught me." Shaking the droplets from her head, the drenched she-cat climbed back onto the shoreline, turning around and offering a paw to her friend to help him up. "But knowing you, you'll probably come up with some other way to get me back later."

(Welcome back! )
A mischievous look crossed his face as he reached up the take her paw. Grabbing it in both paws he tugged hard and flipped Mudthistle into the water. "I like sooner better that later," he laughed as he pulled himself onto the bank. Then his face darkened as he thought about the name she had just used. Ravenstone. How many leaders did SummerClan have recently? Three? Four? He had lost count. But it seemed to him that being chosen as leader of this clan was a sure death sentence. He wondered how long their new one, Gardeniastar will last. He gave himself a shake before he started to groom himself. "It seems we've been chosen to be warriors at a hard time in SummerClan."
"Eek!" Mudthistle let out a yelp as she was suddenly pulled back into the water, colliding with the water in a loud splash. Once her head breached the surface again, she split out the water from her mouth with an unamused glare, before quickly dissolving into a fit of laughter. "Looks like you got me good! ...Huh?" Her giggles stopped as she dragged herself back out of the water, not bothering to even try and dry herself off this time. It took her a moment to process her friend's comment before it quickly sunk in, and she sighed while taking a seat beside him. "Yeah, I guess so. A lot more mouths to feed now, and with Leafbare just around the corner..."

"Yeah," Crimsonlife replied, cleaning water from his fur. "We were just kits last Leafbare. I don't remember too much about it except being cold and playing in the snow. It'll be different this time around for sure." Being a kit back then, he really didn't experience the hunger that many cats face during the cold season. Those in the nursery and the elders were always fed first. He did know that some cats went hungry from time to time and understood why. It was their sacrifice to help others. "I do wonder how the hunting will be."
"It'll probably be a lot harder, that's for sure," Mudthistle admitted with a sigh. "I remember Pantherclaw telling me about how most of the birds leave the forest for warmer places during Leafbare, and when we were kits, our meals were almost always squirrels and mice, weren't they? Guess we'll have to get used to the taste of rodent for a while." A somewhat subdued chuckled followed the comment, while the young warrior stared down at their reflections in the water. "Last leafbare feels like so long ago, doesn't it? I can't believe we're both warriors now. We can do whatever we want..."

Crimsonlife had been listening to Mudthistle as she spoke, nodding his head in agreement. Her last statement made his head jerk up and he looked right at her with a surprised look on her face. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?" he asked, his expression now hopeful. After starting out as enemies, they had become rivals and then friends - best friends even. Just recently their relationship had begun to advance farther, much to his pleasure. His eyes softened as he took a step closer.
Seeing the shocked expression on her companion's face caused Mudthistle to let out a snort. "Not right now, obviously," She teased with a roll of her eyes. "Weren't we literally just talking about how Summerclan didn't need more mouths to feed in Leafbare?" Suddenly, her expression softened, and the young she-cat leaned in towards her best friend, brushing their pelts together. "But yeah, I really can't think of anyone better to father my future kits than you, Crimsonlife. We'd make great parents together, wouldn't we?"

Mudthistle's words thrilled Crimsonlife so much so that he staggered slightly. "Um, yeah," he meowed. Was this really happening? he wondered. This is too good to be true! Then his mood changed ever so slightly. "But I really don't know about me, but you'd make a great mother." He smiled at Mudthistle. "I can tend to make too many mistakes and bad decisions. Like the time I thought it'd be funny to put cat dirt in Graythorn's nest. He had me on tick duty for a month!" The thought of having kits someday with her made him feel ecstatic but it was tempered by his fear of messing up. What if I do something wrong that'll make my kits turn out bad?
