Cutthroat paced in front of the camp's entrance waiting for his new apprentice, Graypaw, to show up. The rising sun's rays made his already auburn coat seem to be blazing red, like a burning ember from an old dry log. He glanced up and watched two birds glide majestically around a cloud dotted sky. Perhaps I'll start with a bit of hunting training, he thought still eyeing the birds. But he wouldn't start out with hunting birds though. That would be in the more advanced training lessons. Maybe a mouse or a vole would be good to start with.
Graypaw couldn't believe it. His first day of training as an apprentice! His fluffy, gray tabby fur was puffed out in excitement, although he moved with careful paws across camp toward Cutthroat. Since his naming, Graypaw tried hard to be mature. As a kit, he would bounce and talk constantly, but now he had a duty to his clan. And more importantly, he refused to disappoint Seastar. "Good morning, Cutthroat!" Graypaw purred, seeing his mentor waiting for him.

"Good morning," Cutthroat returned the apprentice's greeting. He looked at Graypaw before saying anything more. He was a serious cat, very intense and focused. He had seen Graypaw around the camp as a kit and hoped he would be a more mature cat now that he was an apprentice. "I thought we'd start off with some hunting training this morning," he meowed as he rose to his paws. "We'll start first in the training area where I can assess your hunting crouch, stalking ability, and your pounce." He led the way out of the camp.
Graypaw looked up at Cutthroat with an intense blue stare. His entire body quivered but he held perfectly still, his cheeks nearly puffing out from holding in the words that wanted to spill out of him in a flood. "I've been practicing," he managed to squeak, containing his excitement. "Where is the training spot?" He was just as excited to get out into the forest as anything. Despite his rambunctious personality as a kit, it had been contained within the camp walls. He had never disobeyed and left.

"I'm glad to hear that," Cutthroat replied but he already knew that most of what kits play at are things they'll learn to perfect later in life. He didn't say what he thought but only smiled. He was a kit once too. "The training hollow is east of our camp. We'll have to cross the stream to get to it. But don't worry," he said in hope to forestall any complaints or concerns about crossing. "There's a ford that's not very deep, especially during Greenleaf when it doesn't rain very much."
"Okay!" His tail shivered excitedly as he followed Cutthroat toward the forest. He wasn't worried about crossing a stream, although he had never actually seen one before. "Are streams big?" He asked, wondering if they would see fish swimming beneath the water. He was excitedly to learn the perfect hunting crouch, and for the day that he would catch his very first prey. Maybe it would be a mouse. Or a squirrel. Or a bird!

"Some are," Cutthroat replied over his shoulder. "The one that's at the bottom of our gorge is deep, at least in places and the main stream can be deeper in spots as well. Until you learn how to swim it's best to stay away from deep waters." That's all he needed to happen was to have his apprentice drown. He might even be exiled from the clan if that happened. It wasn't long until he saw the stream with the shallow ford just ahead. "Well, here it is," he announced. "What do you think?"
Graypaw looked down at the stream as they came to a stop. The water was clear, bubbling across the rocks that scattered the bottom that was close enough to touch and only wet the bottom half of his leg. "Can I walk across?" He asked, looking up at Cutthroat, asking less for permission and more for reassurance that he would not drown. Unlike most cats, Graypaw had never minded the water. It would not stop him from becoming the best warrior he could be.

Cutthroat smiled at Graypaw. Now here's a cat who's not afraid of new things, he thought pleased at his apprentice. "The current's not swift and the water's shallow so you will be fine." He splashed through the water to the other side enjoying the feel of the refreshing coldness on his paws and legs. "You show courage for one so young," he meowed when he got out of the water. "I have a feeling you're going to do well with your training."
