Many changes had come in the moons since the day that Phantom-chan, now Goldenpaw, had arrived in Dayclan. Kasdeya had been the one to find her, to bring her to her new home, to spend time with her as she healed. She had watched as she joined the other kits in the nursery, as she grew and played and found friendship. They had spent quite a few evenings together, eating and discussing. The Immortal Council member would be hard-pressed to admit it, but she looked at the younger she-cat with a mix of motherly and sisterly emotions, though she knew nothing about either of those.
And the night before, she had watched as Goldenkit became Goldenpaw. For once, her heart had been temporarily free from the ever-present doubt and anger, and instead had burst with pride over the promoted cat. She had left her alone after congratulating her, letting her bask in the moment.
But the following day, she had sought out the she-cat in the mid-afternoon, hoping to take her out of camp and share some of her extensive knowledge. Sure, a spirit mentor might actually exist, but Kasdeya was a renowned fighter, and Goldenpaw would benefit from it. She found the apprentice by the camp exit, and licked her shoulder in greeting. "How are you feeling, Goldenpaw?" Kasdeya gave her a small smile, eyes warm.

If you had told Phantom-chan her life would turn out like this, she wouldn't have been able to believe you. A sudden getaway from the League and a broken leg suddenly became a new life. It was unbelievable, a true Cinderella story. The kind of happy ending she always wanted. But the book hadn't closed, her new life was only beginning.
It was no secret Goldenpaw had quickly attached herself to Kasdeya, seeing her as the mother she never had. Eternally grateful in a way she found hard to express, she instead supported Kasdeya however possible. Sometimes hanging out or dragging the other into conversations she never could have had. The day Kasdeya was announced as joining the Immortal Council, Goldenkit yelled and cheered louder than anyone expected from the apprentice sized kit. Even during the apprentice ceremony, she felt the warm and constant gaze of Kasdeya on her. The moment was so nice. Sure, her friends were still kits, but it wouldn't be long before they joined her. And now she'd get to meet the others in Glowstar's battalion.
Now she sat at the camp entrance, zoning out some. Sure, she was a little unsure of the spirit guide thing when she first came. But now she knew it was real, she could feel it in her muscles. Tigerpaw sure knew how to put apprentices through the wringer. Snapping back to reality, she jumped when Kasdeya licked her shoulder, spinning around quickly before catching herself, "Oh, hi Kasdeya of the Immortal Council. I'm-" She yawned, "aah, um tired. Heh heh. How're you?"
"Fairly well-rested, unlike yourself." Kasdeya's whiskers twitched in amusement- she had never quite learned to laugh, apart from her signature scalding chuckle, and she never used that on Goldenpaw. "So. Did you really meet your spirit mentor? They exist?" Her voice held a twinge of doubt- Kasdeya had grown up with no belief system, and it still seemed implausible to her now. Her blue and orange eyes took in Goldenpaw's size, wondering where the time was going. She was growing up so fast, and Kasdeya was determined to not miss any of it- she was living vicariously through the younger cat's success, rather than doing the hard thing and confronting her own emotional turmoil in any significant manner. She could admit that she was messed up emotionally, but working on it was another thing.

"I was suspicious too, but yeah, they do." Goldenpaw jumped up to her paws as if to prove her point. Her muscles screamed in sudden tension and she winced, "Mines an ornery little thing named Tigerpaw." she said after a brief pause. Straightening herself out, she asked "What's up?"
"Tigerpaw? An apprentice is teaching you?" Kasdeya held back a snort of derision, settling instead for raising her eyebrows. "I came to offer to patrol the territory with you, maybe show you some of my signature moves. If you're up for it, and not too tired." With her extensive League training, Kasdeya was a wily and feared combatant, and she was positive that she could provide better training than some long dead apprentice. And she really did want Goldenpaw to have the best, even if that came across as disdain for the training that Goldenpaw currently was receiving.

"Sure, sounds fun." Even if most parts of her were protesting the idea, one wasn't. Her heart. Anything was better than sitting around by herself and resting. She'd be more restless than anything. A quick walk wouldn't hurt anything, right? And she wanted to spend more time with Kasdeya while she could. Ignoring the part about Tigerpaw's training coming into question, she gave a quick stretch and waited for Kasdeya to take the lead.
Kasdeya nodded, secretly pleased that Goldenpaw continued to want to spend afternoons with her. She rolled her shoulders back, before moving at her smooth gait out of camp and through the territory. She walked in silence for a while, enjoying the greenleaf sunshine and the apprentice's company, before turning her head back to speak to her again. "Have you seen the apple orchard yet?" It was one of Kasdeya's favorite spots in the territory, and it wasn't a bad training location.

Stifling a yawn, she followed Kasdeya, eyes lidded slightly. Through sheer force of will, she followed, straining to keep her head up. Goldenpaw wasn't one to just slug along. So, she took a brief mental rest as her amber eyes traced the green leaves above them.
"No, I haven't." She said after a brief pause, looking down at Kasdeya. Now a little more charged than before, she had some of her pep back.
"We'll go there, then," Kasdeya veered towards the sprawling, sunny orchard, finishing the walk in the same companionable silence it had been started in. Once they arrived, she pointed out the landmarks- the old wooden fence that they easily slipped past, the long, straight rows of squat trees bearing ruby red fruit. "Apples aren't very nutritious, but they're an interesting snack and they work if you're starving," Kasdeya informed her as they walked. She rested with her in the shade of one of the trees for a bit, then turned to her again. "What did your apprentice mentor teach you about fighting?"

By the time the pair reached the orchard, Goldenpaw was back to her usual self. Still, she didn't want to break the silence. An overly infectious talker, she could talk to someone for days and could stare at someone with amber eyes like they were the only other cat in the world. She normally would have, but silence had it's own talking. Not that she was romantic enough to talk about the whispers of grass and the hills watching her as others would. Nodding, she looked up at the red shiny fruit, overtly interested in taking one. She could eat it, but is it juicy? Would the taste go well with mouse? Resting in the glade, she'd have to indulge her curiosity later.
"It's only the first day, so we went over some basic stuff. Proper posture, defensive maneuvers, things like that." Granted, it wasn't much good until she learned how to hunt. But Goldenpaw had plenty of time.
Kasdeya nodded, stifling a yawn from the warmth of the sun and the pleasant breeze that drifted past. "Do you want to show me? I could give you some of my... top-secret tips." Kasdeya attempted a smile, her weak attempt at humor masking her true desire to give Goldenpaw the knowledge she had never shared before- she'd never had a trainee, or an apprentice, or a kit to teach before. She was also phrasing her requests as questions rather than demands, though the latter came far more naturally to her.

Goldenpaw snickered. Not in a mean way, of course. But as one piecing together what Kasdeya was trying to do and trying to reward it. Sure, she could just take in a bunch of air and laugh, but that'd be overly fake. "Hah. Sure." She said, standing up and walking a few paces away before turning around. It was taller than a hunting crouch, but Goldenpaw still held herself closer to the ground. Her pelt puffed up around her, making her even bigger, and her claws out as she stared at the tree behind Kasdeya.
"Okay. That's a good start." Kasdeya bobbed her head, surveying the apprentice closely. "Is this meant to be defensive or offensive? There are specific poses that work for each, but a lot of clan cats tend to use one stance for both, which hinders your abilities in battle." The Immortal Council Member found herself rolling back her shoulders, invigorated at the idea of fighting- it had been a long time since her last good brawl, and she missed the thrill that the heat of the moment brought her, and the satisfaction of a bloody, hard-earned victory. But she shook herself out of her reverie- Goldenpaw was learning the basics.

"I see. This is more of an defensive stance." She found herself noticing the roll of Kasdeya's shoulders, and took an instinctive step back. Realizing what she did, she quickly stepped back forward. Kasdeya had no intention to hurt her, right? Still, the shoulder roll reminded her of cats doing that before pinning her to the ground. Snapping out of it, she let her skin relax, fur starting to flatten as she stood up straight again.
Kasdeya watched her younger friend react instinctively, and grimaced with a kind of morbid understanding. "I won't hurt you, Goldenpaw," she reassured her. "And I'll only ever spar with you when you want me to." Kasdeya knew where the reaction came from, and it did make sense- she and Goldenpaw had gone through the same upbringing, but had emerged with very different reactions to it. The younger cat seemed to go on the defensive, probably from abuse at the hands of her group-mates, but Kasdeya had spent her life on the offensive. If she sensed someone was on the verge of attacking her, she dealt the first blow. It gave her the control of the situation.
"Defense can be necessary at times, but it puts the control into the other cat's paws," Kasdeya said. "The best defense is a good offense. If you have the upper hand, you'll rarely have to defend yourself. And an offensive stance is different from a defensive." After a moment she sunk into her own stance, a further distance away so Goldenpaw would feel safer. Her stance was higher off the ground, lighter on her feet, and more open to quick movement than Goldenpaw's had been. "Like this. Do you understand the differences, and their purpose?"

Goldenpaw didn't think she would. She had so many opportunities too, she would have already. Despite all the kindness those around her showed, Goldenpaw still felt like she couldn't completely trust them. It made her feel lonely. If she felt someone was gonna attack her, she was one to try and talk it out and defend herself rather than striking first. But not everyone can be reasoned with, and she knew that. Her stance would lead her to protect her face and stomach foremost, and she could dart out of the way if need be.
But her legs hurt, and she stood up, mimicking Kasdeya's stance. The best defense is a good offense. It was true, she needed to push her natural instinct to defend out and bring in more tactics. More abilities. More trust.
"Yes, I do." Her nerves hit her paws, and she shuffled them lightly.
"No movement," Kasdeya nodded at her paws, her words coming out more stern than she realized. "But that's a good posture. See if you can quickly shift between defensive and offensive- if you can learn how to naturally move between the two, it will serve you well in battle." The deputy was in automatic mode- her emotions faded to the background when she focused on her fighting, and her tone became clipped and harsher.

Goldenpaw's eyes widened. It was the switch. She knew it, knew it well. All League cats had it, least she thought they did. To flip personalities, immediately become ready to torment or kill, or in this case, become very stern. Most had good control of it, others flipped it wildly. She knew even in herself, there was a switch. It was buried, but ready to be flipped at any moment. Not moving, she slowly switched between the two, increasing the speed the more she got used to it. Struggling to end on the offensive stance, she nodded, staring up at Kasdeya. Her eyes instinctively hardened, no emotion crossing her face.
Kasdeya felt a slight spasm of guilt, her eyes flashing with some dark emotion before she shook her head. "That's good," she commented, with a note of strained positivity as she appraised the apprentice. "You learn quickly, you know. I don't doubt you'll be a renowned warrior someday." She took a step back, heading towards the shade of the apple tree. "Why don't we try those apples now?"

Goldenpaw breathed in slowly through her nose, once again restless as she tried to calm her nerves down. She shouldn't worry. She shouldn't worry. She shouldn't worry. Her head cycled the phrase over and over, like a mantra as her heart finally stopped it's rattling.
"Thank you." She answered, the strain not lost on her as she galloped over to the trees, excitement to try them stirring her up again. She was here, in Dayclan. It was fine, she was safe. Why did she feel so uneasy? ... She had to get stronger.
