laying in the shadows hidden from sight, it was the perfect place to watch the clan without being disturbed. Observing was more or less a hobby for the ruffle pelted she-cat known as Dovepaw, when she wasn't honing her own skills she was learning about the skills possessed by her clanmates and coming up with ways to improve them for herself. Dovepaw had no friends and she was okay with that, why would she want some cat to think they could follow her around or speak to her as freely as those around her did with one another; to her it seemed absurd. The white and silver she-cat curled her tail around her body and let her eyes float around the camp clearing from one cat to the next, pleased that she had not yet been spotted.
"How do they put up with each other like that." Her voice came out soft but it oozed with displeasure at the thought of being surrounded day and night by so many talking cats, she would claw her ears off without her solitude.
Standing at the entrance to SunClan's camp, Bravepaw resembled a flame in contrast the darkness of the tunnels that lied before him. His brightly colored orange fur gleamed underneath the bright light of the sun shining down upon him.
His mentor had asked him to work on his hunting skills near camp while they were out on a patrol, a request that filled him with dread. He had never left camp on his own before, and the maze of tunnels that protected their camp from outsiders was rather intimidating for the already nervous tom. Their were tunnels that lead to drop offs and dead ends. What if he couldn't remember the which path led out of camp? What if he couldn't find his way back home?
He gulped nervously, staring into the darkness ahead of him. He could feel his heart racing in his chest, as a million scary thoughts swirled through his mind. He had to do this, he couldn't stay a scardy cat his whole life. He wanted to show everyone that he could do this. Bravepaw could almost hear it, the last words that his mother had spoken to him before she had passed away "It's ok to be afraid, for it is the only time you can be brave" he muttered under his breathe before taking his first step into the labyrinth that awaited.

Dovepaw caught sight of the orange apprentice standing at the camps entrance, she had never spoken to her denmate before but could tell just being next to him that many things frightened him and even now from her shadowy spot she could see an uncertain light in his eyes as he hesitated to take a step into their clan intricate tunnel system. "Is he afraid he will get lost, stupid fur-ball should know the tunnels by now." Her voice was low as she muttered to herself. A sudden unfamiliar urge had the Small she-cat getting to her paws and padding after the tom as he disappeared into the tunnel, she wasn't sure if she was going so that she could help him if he panicked or if it was to watch him get lost. With confident steps Dovepaw entered the darkness following Bravepaws scent trail.
A few more steps and he was engulfed in the darkness. Even with his heightened eye sight that came along with being a cat, it was difficult for him to make out any smaller details. The stories of foxes and badges were forefront in his mind, as he stayed on high alert. He kept scenting the air, his ears perked and listening for even the slightest disturbance. As the tunnel got more narrow, he brushed the side of the tunnel knocking a small rock loose. The thud it made echoed through the tunnels, as he spun around fur bristling and claws emerging from their sheathes. A loud hiss filled the tunnels until he realized that the source of the sounds.
Forcing his fur to lay flat, he got ready to continue on when something caught his attention. He could see something moving, a dark blob against the darkness. Allready frightened, rational thought left him. A loud pitched screech emerged from his jaws as he took off in a full run in the opposite direction of Dovepaw. The sharp stones of the tunnel cut into him as he fled deeper into the tunnels and away from the scent markers.

Dovepaw had stayed back keeping her distance but not so far that she couldn't see Bravepaws dark form moving through the dark, her pelt ruffled as a stone hit the ground and the tom hissed frightened by the sound she was positive he had caused. She took another step forward only to be greeted by a loud wail and then pawsteps running away from her,. He's going the wrong way! What a mouse-brain. Dovepaw hiss and began to pelt after the tom, following his scent as they led further from the right path. "Stop, you're going the wrong way!" Her voice came loudly and in huffs as she struggled for breath, she would claw his ears when she caught him... If she caught him before it was too late.
It was to late. Fear had taken over, and the only thing Bravepaw heard was the blood rushing through his ears and the pounding of his feet against the dirt of the tunnel floor. His tail was fluffed out as is streamed behind him, a streak of orange in the darkness.
Finally up ahead he saw a light, as he barreled towards it at full speed. <Finally the exit!> he thought to himself. It was such a relief, knowing that his torment would be over in a few moments. He didn't slow down, to afraid that what ever was behind him would be right behind them. His eyes widened as he reached the light, blinding him after being in the dark for so long as his eyes tried to adjust to the world beyond
Before him was a wide expanse of open sky, he tried to stop but the ground underneathe his feet was gone.

Pushing her paws harder against the ground Dovepaw picked up speed, she knew if the tom didn't slow down he was likely to run out of the tunnel into some kind of danger. All she could small was Bravepaws fear scent, dirt and fresh clean air flowing in through the exit of the tunnel. It leads to nothing, he had to go down this one! She pushed on not slowing her pace even though she could feel her pads beginning to crack from the force she ignored it until bright light hit her eyes and she caught a glimpse of orange fur propelling from the end of the tunnel. "Mouse-brain!" She hiss as she dove for the exit her paws extended hoping she had been fast enough to catch Bravepaw from falling to his death, a sudden weight told her that she had managed to grasp him in time her claws unsheathed and digging into his shoulders as she tried to keep him from falling.
Her upper body was hanging out of the tunnel mouth with him and below she saw a long drop before the ground appeared, his weight was heavy compared to hers and she could feel her hind paws sliding. "What were you thinking!?" She growled down at him keeping her claws buried in him, with frantic movements she began to force her back legs deeper into the cave until she was sure she had a fairly good grip on the dirt beneath them. Dovepaw mustered up all of her strength and pulled the tom closer to her face until she could grip his scruff in her jaws and released her claws from his fur, with all four paws back on solid ground she pushed herself backwards dragging the heavy apprentice up and over the lip of the tunnel until his entire body lay on top of the cold dirt. Her breathing was ragged as her sides heaved, "What kind of dumb move was that?! You could have died!" Her voice was harsh as her breathing stabilized and she was glaring coldly at Bravepaw her blue eyes like shards of ice.
He looked down, the ground was far below. His feet thrashed and a loud scream echoed through the cliffs as he felt claws suddenly digging into his pelt. He fought against her until her voice reached his ears. He stopped, freezing to make it easier for her to get a grip on him, even though hanging his whole weight on claws was rather painful..
Once she had managed to pull him up, he pushed against the stone he could reach with his back paws to help her get him back into the cave. Once he was back on solid ground, he collapsed onto it, his breathing rapid."I... there was a monster in there" he replied still fearfully peering into the darkness.

Dovepaw shook her head and rolled her eyes still glaring at Bravepaw, she lifted one of her front paws and gave the pad a tentative lick wincing at the pain. "It wasn't a monster, it was me. You aren't the only cat that uses these tunnels you know." She paused in her licking to mutter angrily at him, she wasn't about to tell him she had been following him he didn't need to know that bit of information. "Why in the world did you panic so much, don't your senses work enough to tell you whats around you?" She brought her eyes back up to meet his waiting for him to answer, hopefully it was a good one.
"Oh..." he replied looking down at the ground as he felt heat rising to his cheeks. Honestly he didn't know. There had always been something different about him,but it had only become more apparent the older that he got. Fears that most kits outgrew still plauged him. He was easily frightened, his sense becoming overwhelmed rather easily as his fear took over.. No one really understood or even tried to. They just mocked him for being a frightened kit, instead of even attempting to help.
"I don't really know what to say. I have always been this way. I guess your just going to laugh at me to" he looked out over the drop off that he had almost ran off of. Why wouldn't she? She had just watched him make an utter fool out of himself. He wasn't a kit anymore... he knew that he needed to get over this, but when the fear took over it was to late. Nothing else mattered as all concious thought fled from the recesses of his mind.

The white she-cat shook out her unkempt silvery gray tinged pelt and her eyes softened slightly, she was angry but she also felt relief that the tom was safe which was uncommon for her. Dovepaw looked out mainly for herself though she like any other had a strong loyalty to protect her clan but for her it was different, individual cats didn't matter to her they were all a nuisance so why did she feel a wave of guilt that she had caused this cowardly cat so much fear and pain. "Why would I laugh, you really could have been hurt, actually you probably wouldn't have survived at all." There was still harshness ringing in her voice but it was only directed partially at Bravepaw while the other part was toward herself. "You should be more careful Bravepaw!" Her words echoed against the walls around them and she stood up reluctantly her pads throbbing.
He bit his bottom lip nervously, but as she responded he blurted out "because everyone laughs at me" He was clearly upset, turning away from her, wincing as the pain from when the she-cats claws had dug into him. "I'm the laughing stock of the clan, an no one can even take seconds to even try to understand me. My own siblings have nothing to do with me"
He pushed himself to his paws, and had he been anywhere else, he probably would have stormed off. Blood had begun to trickled through his fur, but it wasn't life threatening. It was deep and had tore where his whole weight had been placed upon her claws. He didn't know why he was telling her all of this, she was just going to be the same as all the others. He could see it in her eyes, no matter what words came out of her mouth. It was the same look that most of clan gave him. A mixture of disapointment, disdain, and confusion.

Dovepaw opened her mouth and closed it again, she was blocking his only escape route and she wasn't about to let him get away so easily. The she-cat sat back down and curled her fluffy tail over her paws ignoring the pain the was radiating through them and looked at Bravepaw with clean blue eyes. "I'm not laughing am I?" Her tone was serious though as always held her normal harshness. "They continue to laugh because they know you will react to it the way you always do, they find entertainment in the torture it causes you and they will keep doing it as long as you let it bother you so deeply." as she spoke she leaned her head forward and sniffed at his shoulders where the blood had trickled out and was beginning to dry, she moved back her eyes narrowed at him. Dovepaw had seen it before, the way their clanmates treated him it was another reason she interacted so little with the others they were all obnoxious to her but for some reason sitting here listening to Bravepaw and hearing the ache and frustration in his words she couldn't walk away and that sent a wave of rage through her body. Why in the world am I still here, just get up and go back to being by yourself and leave this cat to deal with his problems. As she thought it though she realized that even if she tried her paws would not allow her to turn and leave, her eyes lit up with a new fire and she whipped her head back toward Bravepaw. "Every cat has fears but you must learn to control them better! Or at least find some cat to help you." She tried hard to keep the growl out of her voice but failed.
It was hard not to feel trapped. With one exit leading to the the drop off, and the other being blocked by the she-cat there was no way out of this. In any normal situation, he would have already left instead of continuing to talk. Here he had little choice, as he glanced out at the ground far below as if seriously contemplating throwing himself from the ledge rather than facing the harsh criticism. He continued to tremble his green eyes still locked onto the whites of his paws as he finally spoke
"You make it sound easy" he murmered uncomforatbly. Bravepaw usually fled from situations such as these "there is no controlling it, my mind goes all mushy and all that matters is getting away. My paws move without me thinking, and my heart feels like its going to explode"

She could feel the muscles in her body tensing as she pushed her anger back, her tail twitched and she took a step toward the frightened tom. She wanted to push his emotions, test and see if underneath all of that scared mush she could find even the smallest amount of anger that could be used to fuel any determination he may have. "I know it's not easy, I didn't say it was! You're going to get yourself killed one day or one of our clanmates at that if you can't learn to at least control it a little." She looked pointedly at the long drop behind him where he had almost lost his life.
She began to wonder if perhaps all of this was pointless, if the only way he could be helped was to have some cat following him around and on watch. She pushed the thought from her head and focused on Bravepaw once more, she was stepping out of her comfort zone just talking to him but he had frustrated her so much that she was beyond feeling discomfort and all of her earlier thoughts to just turn and leave vanished. "You can't get away now, so what are you going to do? Sit there until we both starve to death in this tunnel or stand up for yourself, your name is Bravepaw you should live up to it!" Her words held less harshness but the hiss behind them was still there, she had decided she would help him whether he liked it or not though she would gain nothing she couldn't sit by and watch him cower around until he was killed or got some other cat killed.
She was right. He knew that something needed to be done, but he had no clue what he could do about it. He had made some progress since he was a kit, but not enough to say that he was any where near over it. Brave... a name that most cats would have loved to be gifted, but for him it was a name that only made his weakness all the more apparent.
"I..." he didn't know what to do, and you could physically see the internal struggle she was putting him through. The muscles along his spine tremored and his tail was twitching. He would start to move foreward, then would stop and scramble backwards "being afraid is the only time you can be brave" he whispered, loud enough for her to over hear her words. The words comforted him giving him the strength he needed to rise to his paws and meet her gaze, even though he still seemed nervous "let's go before my mentor skins me alive"

Dovepaw watched him as he seemed to be struggling internally and waited for him to make the next move, patiently hoping he would mention getting out of this tunnel she was beginning to feel cramped. Her ears pricked as she heard his quiet words, words he must say to himself often as a form of comfort and she gave a small smile. As Bravepaw stood up she followed suit and got to her paws the stinging in her pads now a dull ache and a fire lit in her blue eyes as he told her they should go, it wasn't a question and although he was still nervous she could hear the seriousness in his voice.
"It's about time, we could have been out of here ages ago if you had only done that sooner." Her smile had vanished now and her words once again held their sharp bite. "That was a good start though." She added a little more softly and turned to face the way back, stepping to the side so he could go ahead of her. In a much quieter voice almost to herself she spoke again. "You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have." The words had not meant to be heard by Bravepaw but the echo of her voice off the walls of the tunnel intensified the volume and she flinched inwardly as she realized he would have been able to hear them.
