Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
You know, he was having such a nice afternoon that day. The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and not a single cat had visited him all day. Completely perfect. Until he stepped outside.
Firetooth blinked. And then blinked again. Staring down at the huge bird that had just dropped from the heavens dead in front of him. A stork. He sighed in defeat. "Yeah, yeah, I get the message," he said to no one in particular. "It's close enough. Starkkit it is then, I guess."
Fast forward to now, exactly two days later. Yesterday was Starkki-paw's apprentice ceremony, and today he was officially moving in.
In the dim light of the tree hollow that was Earthclan's Medicine Cat Den, Firetooth sat alone in the far back, sorting out various leaves and herbs in preparation for his new apprentice's first lesson in 'healing the generally stupid and sometimes sick'. Was he at all ready for the responsibility that was associated in teaching a cat barely out of kithood how to preserve the future of the entire clan?
Haha, no.
For Starclan's sake, he wasn't even apprentice-age himself when he was chosen for this job! He had spent countless moons secluded from the rest of his clanmates trying to learn everything he needed to so his family wouldn't die on him. Now he was supposed to teach someone else what he still barely understood himself? Literally nothing about his life was fair; Starclan never made anything easy for him.
So he wasn't about to take it easy on this kit either.
The ginger tom's movements halted as he noticed a small shadow slink across the dirt from the den entrance. Holding back a groan, he slowly rose to his paws, still not turning to look at Starkpaw. "I hope you brought your bedding like I asked? You can set it over there next to mine." With a lashing sweep of his tail, he gestured to the corner of the room, where his own nest sat near some patient beds. "Make sure you like where you put it, you'll be sleeping there for the rest of your life."
"Make sure you like where you put it, you'll be sleeping there for the rest of your life."
There was something about the way he said it that left a sinking feeling in the pit of Starkpaw's stomach. Still, he wasn't discouraged that easily. He couldn't respond right away due to the wad of moss between his jaws and tucked under his chin so he was quick to do as he was told, though it was more out of convenience than obedience. There was no doubt in the young cat's mind that this was what he was meant to do.
He began to work the moss into a nest a few mouse lengths away from his mentor's. "Really? wow, I've never seen moss regrow it's roots before" he snickered at the other tom's somewhat grim remark.
"It doesn't." Perhaps it was just his nature, but Firetooth was quick to shut down his apprentice's joking, despite the amused snort that left his nose as he did so. The pair quickly fell into an awkward silence as Starkpaw made his nest; the new mentor unsure of how to proceed. After a second of hesitation, he padded over to the younger tom's side, watching nonchalantly over his shoulder as he worked, revealing the white bib of fur that ran from his bottom jaw to the bottom of his head. Firetooth's green eyes scanned the room as he tried to figure out what to do now. It wasn't like he had ever done this before. And his own mentor could barely be called one, if he was being honest.
"Well, I guess we'll start with the boring introductory stuff," he mused out loud with a tired sigh. The exact moment Starkpaw was finished setting up his bed, he pushed him back towards the main entrance, directing him with a firm paw. "Tour time; this is the den entrance. Only way in and out of the hollow." Another hard turn. "Where you just were is the living quarters. There's our nests, and then two sick nests, though we can fit three if we gotta. It's your job to change sick bedding after prolonged stays; mix of dry grass and moss." Now they were both facing the back of the den. "And here in the way back is our herb stores. Your other job will be to learn the different herbs, then collect and restock at my request. Any questions?"
Starkpaw wrinkled his nose in disgust at the mention of having to change the bedding of all the sick cats. He would definitely not be looking forward to that. He did his best to keep quiet as Firetooth gave the tour, mainly because the older ginger Tom didn’t leave him any room to speak until the end.
“No I think you just about covered everything” he blinked in mild surprise. Trying to be serious for the moment the young apprentice wracked his brain for any possible questions but really couldn’t think of any besides the obvious.
Great. That tour managed to waste...what, one minute at most? His paws fidgeted in the dirt as he struggled to think of a plan for this apprentice. Starkpaw looked so determined and eager to please; a vast difference from his own first days as a Medicine Cat. Did this kit even realize what he was getting into? Most of the brainless warriors outside seemed convinced that a healer just sat and played with leaves all day.
Firetooth supposed that was as good enough a place to start as any. Without immediately answering the question, the tom turned towards the back and gestured with his tail for Starkpaw to follow. Taking a seat next to the herb storage, he stared down at the younger cat and breathed a large, tired sigh through his nose.
"Alright. Here's a question for you; what do you know about Medicine Cats? The job, herbs, the code, tell me literally everything you know. Even if you think it's insignificant or stupid, which it probably is, tell me it anyway."
